Even to wear in work-related settings/in smart casual ensembles? I guess the brown just doesn't suit me.

You're responding to someone that has worn full players kit out and about in non footy settings..... :P lol
Brown polo shirts don't phase me much, it's Hawthorn (minus the brown/gold stripes lol).

No. It was an arbitrary Adidas thing from 2013 where they gave us a recycled Collingwood template. We've had stripes in the past but the way it's implemented isn't Hawthorn.

Our first striped guernsey had stripes on the front and back in 1950. Stripes remained on the back until 1974. Stripes returned from 2006 (nothing to do with Adidas). Adidas just removed the polo square. The back stripes were removed from 1975 to 2005. Of the entire time we have had a striped guernsey we have had stripes on the back. We have played more seasons with the stripes on the back in some variation. We won our first flag with stripes on the back. 6 premierships won with the stripes on the back. The stripes stay.

'Underarmour' (although being manufactured by ISC) really haven't set the world on fire for Essendon since they took over either.

There really isn't much to get that excited about, other than having a much more reputable neckline sponsor on the guernsey. Skechers, for all their effort, lack cool factor.
A mate bought a pair of Ecco golf shoes recently - his wife's reaction was "we've made a seniors purchase have we?". Sketchers has a similar vibe.

I have distant memories of sketchers being cool but now they're comfort shoes for seniors.

Cool seniors for sure, but definitely seniors.

I saw a version of a hawks jumper that looked really good on a local junior club, full stripes front and back with white numbers. We’ve never gone there but it looked suprisingly striking and way different to what we’ve ever done before.

As from my previous comment - we've had stripes in the past but the way it's implemented isn't Hawthorn.

The gold back with the stripes was a novel introduction from Adidas, who gave us two would've been Collingwood templates for the 2013 season but changed the colours around. This removed a piece of uniqueness about our jumper. The current stripe pattern is a presentable take, sure. but it's Collingwood and North's, not ours.

I'm one for tradition and preserving identity - either bring back the white polo square, or go with the full gold back.

The club colours and jumper design have changed a lot since establishment in 1902.

Why are those two specific design choices so important?

Yup exactly. I’m also glad brown with gold stripes is a memory, that was so Collingwood. Never understood why Collingwood switched their colours around either.

Definitely preferred the Puma kits from 2012 vs the Adidas ones that came after…but then again it’s probably due to when I grew up. Younger kids whose first Hawthorn memory was the three peat might feel differently.

It's been 3 brown/4 gold stripes since 1950 - that continues to today. It has nothing to do with Collingwood whatsoever - I don't care if they happened to be under the Adidas umbrella at the time. All Adidas did was take away the polo square off the last Puma incarnation which was daft. Our colours are brown and gold - not brown, gold, white and black. People lose their minds over a blue polo but don't mind a giant white panel with black numbers?

If the club wanted to go back to some heritage though - I think reinventing the 1952 guernsey would be an interesting departure. I hate the polo panel but I like the brown panel with gold numbers.

Footyjumpers.com has what we've worn throughout the years if you want to have a look
That’s a great resource thanks for the link.
Apropos of nothing, I wonder if the AFL will ever introduce the tight, short sleeve muscle shirt the NRL boys wear.
If nothing else, it’s another advertising opportunity.

Who gives a shit about what has a cool factor, they want their logo on our Guernseys and other clothing they pay for the privilege and it goes to the highest bidder. We don't put KFC on the back because it's the best chicken it's there because they pay us to.

If the goal is to hypnotise our opponents then that kit is a go. From a distance you won’t even be able to read the numbers.

The only decent thing about the white panel was it allowed us to have full stripes on the back while being able to actually read the numbers at the same time - and that we won in it a lot. We did also wear it for a decade in the 60’s when Peter Hudson was at the peak of his powers so it’s not like the kit was totally irrelevant in our history.
