On his performances alone, Jack deserves an AFL spot.

However I cannot help but think that this has to do with Butters. I really don't see Watkins having a role in the AFL side unless our midfield is completely decimated with injuries. So this pick to me seems more to do with keeping Butters than giving Watkins a genuine AFL shot.

I'm not sure if that'll be the case, I think if he joins it'll be on the AFL list.

Taking 2 spots to SSP tells me we've somewhat committed to Stephenson

I think there is room for 2 of Drew, Brodie, Liddy, and Watkins. 3 with Wines out the first 2 weeks.

Mead shouldn't even be in the conversation now. SANFL all year for him.

I reckon the competition for spots will be really strong this year especially compared to the Hinkley era.

Lots of hardened experienced types in that mid field group, maybe lacking in elite factor for some, but will at least be combatative and competitive. Surround the foot soldiers with the elite quality and it may work.

Probably didnt want to get picked in the hinkley era because you just know he would of been playing (and dominating) SANFL midfield then get plonked in a forward pocket at AFL level anyway.
