It's the idiots out there that are laughing at Port. The serious pundits out there would probably have some grudging respect for Port sticking to their guns ... 'The players we had earmarked where gone by our pick, so we passed."

A smart move IMO, it means we can 'keep our powder dry!' All the players left at our pick are still there now, and are still accessible. So why make a pick on the night, just for the sake of it?

Assuming he impresses, we are likely adding Stephenson to the list. Now we can take our time and decide what to do with the other spot.

'We missed out on the players we wanted, so decided to draft some random we didn't really want, to take a list spot, just because' would be an idiotic list management decision.

Club did the right thing opting out of this weak draft. We needed to reset after being in a cycle selling off constant future firsts.

Finishing also down the bottom of the ladder, also devalues many of our players, who we might have considered trading.

Next year it’s a different story. Although having Butters and Bergman, 2 out of top 5 stars not being on long term deals, makes it really difficult for the list management side. They are kind of holding the side hostage atm.

Carr has done well to start a clean out, but you don’t trade or move on other certain players, or draft certain types, until you know what’s happening with Butters and Bergman.

12 months to find out I guess.

Ultimately, whether we like waking up today without a new 18 yo player on our list or not, we should give Carr the benefit of doubt in judging players on our list according to his vision of our game plan and therefore knowing what we do and don’t need.

I prefer us judging talent after it’s been exposed either through train-on SSP spots or the mid/season. Sure as hell beats taking punts on kids like McCallum and Charleson when they’ve been playing in an U18 comp under a completely different game plan and coaching system.

I think we’ve made good decisions on Lai and Ramm recently, and weren’t too far off with Evans, McKinlay and Liddy.

We’re better taking this option when our picks are late.

Going forward the key is to preserve some early picks in the first and second rounds and do better with those selections to make sure we get A-graders on our list too.

With Parker's statement that there was no-one left that we wanted in the draft, it seems less unlikely that we will be looking at kids who went undrafted for the SSP spots. Maybe we'll look to recently delisted players who could fill a need as players or guys who can help develop the kids we have in a simialr way to Luke Hodge did at Brisbane.
Any thoughts on who we could look at?

Of the undrafted players, I hope we have a look at Taj Murray and Balyn O’Brien. We know Stephenson is part of the train on list, and Rome Burgoyne.

Any others likely to be on the radar?

I would've thought the line is through Rome Burgoyne they've seen him at close quarters for long enough now.

If the rules for train-on spots haven't changed recently, we can only have 4 players (2 per list spot) invited out. Stephenson is a definite, I hadn't heard anything official about Rome but seems to be accepted around these parts. So choose wisely for the other 2 spots.

Evans at his best is a walk up start in our best 23 every day of the week, but he had an awful case of second year blues.

Of the 5 you mentioned, I think Liddy is the one who probably doesn’t quite make it in the end.

And yet, he looked at the level during the third quarter of our win against GC where he had the ball on a strong on his wing.

Parker on 5AA strongly suggested we were interested in the SA talent that went immediately before our pick. Sounds like he was prepared to select right until they were taken off the board. Rowe appropriately asked why we gave up pick 49 then. Parker made it sound like GC made us the offer and we took it because we didn’t know what talent would be left for us to select from.

We seemingly had/have no interest in the remaining undrafted players, B.O.B. included.

Absolutely no issue with our strategy in this draft.

I suspect LeRay was the last name they put a line through. If the draft had stopped where Twomey was predicting we would have had the choice of Roberts-Thomson or LeRay. So even then, then upper limit of our list was gone.

Even if we still had 49 (which we wanted to cash in for chips next year) I think only those two players would have been on the board.

But clubs just kept picking. After our pass, the draft fell in a heap, a couple of re-listings and a speculative father-son.

So have we upgraded anyone from our 2025 Rookie list yet? I went to the PAFC website to find out where our list stands but I should have known better. They still have the likes of [PLAYERCARD]Travis Boak[/PLAYERCARD], [PLAYERCARD]Jeremy Finlayson[/PLAYERCARD] and [PLAYERCARD]Willie Rioli[/PLAYERCARD] listed on our senior list.

As I see it we have added Brodie, Durdin, Wehr to our senior list via trading and added Watkins in the Rookie Draft but have we elevated anyone from last year's Rookie List?

Evans, Cochrane, Lai and Ramm have filled our last four senior list spots.

Two rookie spots left open.

Wouldn’t be ruling out Liddy yet. The guy will be having his first proper AFL preseason this year. He also showed glimpses on more than one occasion that he is comfortable at the level.

Liddy will be like the Tom Atkins of Port. Plays an important role that will enable the stars to shine even more brightly.

As much as I’d love him to succeed, I’m not sure about Liddy by yet.

I don’t see any real tricks or elite straights to his game.

But if he is getting picked instead of Mead then I’m all for it

Rome is still only 19, reckon he's still got a bit of improvement in him.
