I hope mcguane now plays 100 games for the crom… and sticks it up the pies recruiters in the process

For all the talk that 18 clubs passed on him… the draft featured clubs taking players that were in similar positions to Tom on the draft board…or not even on the draft radar

Taking 4 on draft night unnecessarily squeezed the rookie position down to one…

Whilst we all hope the 4 drafted will go on to be successful… the later picks were Hail Mary late picks, a roll of the die based off little exposed form in some cases.

Going back over the list of players the pies have taken over the years with later picks (30 onwards) is a revolving door with few of those late picks sticking

So mcguane for mine comparably should’ve been drafted or a spot left open to rookie him… and the work put in to developing him
Agree and I’m still baffled why we chose Saxena over Tom. If the former was game ready, and had close to Bobby Hill potential then it would understandable, but that’s not the case IMO.
As others have said, it’s all about Tom’s size, because his other attributes are above average to elite.
So we’ve effectively sacrificed high potential for the time needed to build Tom’s body. Just dumb, particularly as Saxena is equally physically challenged.

Personally, I still think we should’ve drafted Logan Morris.
Moons was talking about him on SEN this morning. He was only 19 years old when the season started and kicked 52 goals this year. 2 Premierships and 76 goals in his first 2 seasons. We definitely should’ve drafted have drafted him.

Annoying because we entered that draft in dire need of key forward depth, and even before the draft (and on these boards), Logan Morris seemed like an obvious selection for us.

We then proceeded to pick De Mattea, who most on here (inlcuding myself) saw as limited/flawed, with amply room for growth. Only guess is that they thought they were getting a ready made type mid.

Imagine young forward prospects of Morris, West, McCarthy and Condon (more likely then not)....Sigh

I think it’s reductive to say McGuane was only overlooked because he’s small. That is clearly not true. His physical attributes in general lack hurt factor.

He struggled with the step up to VFL athleticism in a big, big way (especially compared to someone like Prindable, who looked fine over a handful of games). AFL is unfortunately ages away for Tom, if there at all. He’s a long way behind

IF he is good as you and others say why did not no one Draft Him and best he got was a Pre-Season Training at Crows with a Possibility getting a SSP though not Guranteed

Saxena has more Hurt Factor then Tom

So we should of just kept the Rookie Spot open and get a Few Guy to Fight over the last Rookie Spot?

Tom was pretty much useless in his 2 VFL Games

To be fair, I don't think Tom spent all that much time on the field for at least one of the games.
Plus the games he played had Tom Mitchell, Mason Cox, JDG, Bobby Hill and WHE in some games.
I don't think he was playing badly I just don't think he was getting the ball much. Players seem to send the ball to the players they know and who call for it.

He played 3 games
Frankston
Willy
Port melb. (I thought he looked good, his first half, had some nice run and carry down the wing) where he had 14 disposals

I think my point is McGuane could have more hurt factor in 3 years than Saxena.
I like your suggestion of a fight over a rookie spot.

Yeah he might. But that's the draft. To me, it's pretty easy to see what Saxena will be if he kicks on and becomes an AFL player. Tom a different story. What role will he play at AFL?

The safest bet is that both aren’t in the AFL. But that ain’t your view or the clubs. Both have been assessed during development pathways and Saxena has his nose in front. I still back the club.

I agree he’s not ready but that’s not the argument. The question is - given his very high footy IQ and other excellent traits, should we have taken him and put time into his physical development ie just like we will need to do with Saxena, who’s got a lower ceiling IMO.

I suspect if Tom was say 183cm and 6kg heavier he would be on our list today.

Can you tell me more about those elite traits? He’s a great accumulator and seems to position himself well, but I don’t know what he does at an elite level really.

If him being bigger made him better at the contest then it might have a bearing on his prospects.

Saxena has dress sense.
Well yes, I’ve mostly seen him wearing black and white stripes which is a very sensible outfit for any occasion.

But maybe Jeffy G is around what we should hope for from Saxena if things go well?

It all depends what you mean by “kicks on”, but with adding height and bulk, clearly Tom’s got the smarts and skills to be a damaging mid as per all the early predictions of the pundits.

To my eye, he's more Jimmy Krakouer - especially the way he catches the ball (rather than marks it) - seems to have long arms, just like jimmy
What does Stephen Milne have that Jai doesn’t?
