It depends i guess. Father-Son is certainly a more romantic thing than NGAs

Could get either way
One option involves staying in the same city as your family and all your friends, the other involves moving interstate away from all of those.

And Rodan was a 111 game player for 6 years at Port, while he also spent 5 years at Melbourne clubs for 70 games. He's not a 200+ game legend of the club. Kinda cuts down on the romanticism thing a bit.

Plus Port via Ollie Wines put him on the path to retirement with that tackle in the G.

I was kinda sad it was Rodan but gee whiz did Ollie make a statement

What happens if a player like Dougie refuses to chat with any other clubs, and also doesn’t go to any combines etc…

As an oppo club do you still bid on them in the draft?

Clubs will do what benefits them. My assumption is they'll bid if they want the player, and if they know you're going to match and it moves their other picks into a better position, or pushes their matchable player down a bit and thus makes that player cheaper.

If you refuse to talk to clubs and don't go to combines without a good reason, the AFL will exclude you from the draft. And don't think they wouldn't do it to us.

All he needs to do is under perform in the combine play average throughout the U18 comp and in interviews with certain clubs arrive late or say things like not seeing himself playing and living interstate.

He will drop down fast in the draft rankings.
Last year this time Dyson Sharp was touted as the number 1 pick by Cal Twomey.

No reason he can't go to an interview to another club wearing a Port polo shirt.

Sounds like a great way to **** up his development. Why don't we send him down to North Melbourne for a few years while we are at it?

Laughable if you think his development is going to get messed up if he doesn't perform well in interviews and in the combine.

He has access to Port's training facilities as an NGA.

I'd settle for a consensus top 3 pick that slides to 8 or so, like Nick Blakey or Tom Green
Nah, rookie draft. :smirk:

Seriously though, I think Dougie will either go at pick 2 or pick 3 barring injuries. Pretty sure the club that has pick 1 will want to draft a player that isn't tied to any clubs for the prestige and bonus $$ that comes with it...unless you're the other mob downtown of course.🤣

Give those clubs a free fourth and fifth to not bid on Dougie

He should eat, train, play like its the real thing. Nothing less.
Totally agree.

Some truths like “…I am close with all my family…” and “…it would be difficult to move from SA given my dad’s health…” do not breach any draft rules and say all that is needed.

We have to be prepared to match at #1 and the wooden spooner has to be prepared for the possibility that we don’t match and they are left with a flight risk.

Can I also add- the AFL are keen to have club’s pay the real price and its clubs at the bottom that want this to happen most. Nick Daicos would go at #1 if his draft year was 2026 (and Dougie wasnt in it).

In my opinion, Dougie is the best player, not only in his year but at least since Harley Reid. He will go at #1. He will be the first club tied player to do so.

I think Walker would go 1 if draft was open and held no. Cochrane is more wow because he can do anything. But Walker is safer in that he's a crystal clear star midfielder.

True, but a kid getting to 200cm, jet speed and great disposal is a unicorn surely

He's a really special talent, who could probably play any role on the ground. Goodes, Buddy level wow is the potential. But ultimately players only play one role at a time and I'd be more certain of Walker being a star mid, so it's who I'd take at this stage, but we're still a fair way out and it'd probably come down to individual clubs and whether they'd shoot for the moon or be a bit more conservative like me.

Geez some of you guys can apply to replace Shifter Sheehan on draft night, re hyperbole about every kid drafted.

Maybe, but by reference to the tag line under your post which has read the same for more than 5 years: big body- check. Warrior with a healthy dose of mongrel- check. Ruthless and brave- check. Haven’t checked out his arse but I’m not sure that’s the most important part of your job description.

I don’t know much about Walker (so I’m not guilty of talking up every draftee Sheehan style) but what I’ve heard (from those connected to the club) and what I’ve seen of Dougie, I think his middle name should be hyperbole.
