That 2009 elimination final win against Essendon by 96 points was some of the best footy I'd seen us play, Porps/Chris Knights at their absolute peak, and Bernie Vince taking the pisssssss. What could've been if Truck didn't grab Jack Anthony the next week. RIGHT. IN. FRONT. OF. ME.

We would have been beaten by Geelong in the prelim probably by a much smaller differential than they beat Collingwood by. I'm saying 1 to 4 goals.

Winning our first ever final away vs Hawthorn is pretty remarkable looking back

The MCG finals wins over Melbourne 2002 and Bulldogs 2015 would be held in (even) higher regard if they were part of a premiership campaign. But as we fell at the next hurdle they don't get remembered like the 1997 prelim for instance.

The 1998 prelim was a crazy game. Both teams scoring goals in chunks. McLeod 7 goals, Robran 6 goals (!)

I terms of games I was actually at I'd have to say the Petrenko game vs North Melbourne in 2013

Came back from over 30 points down
It may have been a shit year, but it was a fantastic win. I remember being out that day, listening to the 5AA broadcast in the car, piling on goal after goal, thinking 'surely we can't win from here ... could we?' Then I arrived home and saw the last goal on TV and I was just gobsmacked.

if you remember, at the time North were in a bit of a stretch of giving up leads late in games - they choked against West Coast and I think another one too, but not from over 5 goals up

Once we got back to within 2 goals, it was like everyone at the ground knew what was about to happen - surreal feeling

We gave away a free but they turned it over. Ball inside 50 and Petrenko knocked it through. I went crazy in front of the TV.

And there was that come from behind win against Geelong but they did not save us in the end of what was a disappointing season.

2001 vs Carlton at Princes Park, the thunderstorm game where Roo kicked 4 for our first win of the season.
2002 vs Geelong at the Cattery, another Roo special with 5 goals and a win 15.3 to 12.18...when outplayed for most of the game.
2024 vs Carlton at Marvel - the comeback win with Sam Berry kicking the winning goal!
2024 vs Essendon at Marvel - another 2 point win, with Keays and Fog prominent.
Been to all of these...and survived!

Petrie got a free at halfback and then later took a contested mark on the wing. Somehow they were unable to run the clock down.

As jake said their run of choking away games got them mentally.

The camera switches to the NM coaches box during that last quarter are as entertaining as the game itself

there was one in the tail end of the Geelong dynasty where they were top of the table, and we were struggling to make finals.

Dangerfield/Walker out

And we beat Geelong in the rain. Matty Wright kicked 4, and Bartel/JOhnson missed shots in the last 2 minutes for us to hold on by 2 or 3 points.

Wasn't that the year we almost beat Geelong over there? Some Paul Chapman magic just got them over the line.

I don't think we would have beaten them either, but we would have put up more of a fight, I think. Collingwood got belted in that Prelim.

There was a game in 2010 at Football Park where we beat them by about 10 points. I was sitting behind the goals when a young Taylor Walker kicked an incredible goal from on the boundary line.

I remember this game well as I had friends from Scotland staying over and I took them to the game. I expected us to lose by 10 goals. We played incredible that day and Geelong seemed pretty flat.

Obviously we have strong candidates like our first ever finals win and some countless games where we have come from behind to snatch victory. No so much in recent years.

My candidate for our best ever win is hands down '1997 Preliminary Final' Come back win against the Western Bulldogs.

I remember this day vividly. My Grandfather had died this day in the morning and I remember at half time thinking to myself 'what a ****ing day' Only 17yo at the time.

Trailing by 31 points at half time I thought the match was as good as over. We never had a good track record of coming back and at 31 points I thought like probably everyone else the game was gone. Especially since Modra was stretched off with his knee, Liptak and Riccuito were out. My head was down. Even at the last change I was thinking to myself 22 points is a long way back.

But that last quarter comeback was epic. One of the best things I have ever seen. Imagine being their live. It would have been one of the best experiences outside of a premiership a Crows fan can have. So many ups and downs that day. Its a match I watch once a year along with the St Kilda Premiership.

Anyways, im sure everyone has their favourites.
I was there and as I've said before here, I thought Libba had missed 'the goal'. Had an excellent line on the kick and to this day, I still believe a point was the correct decision. But I was relieved the goal umpire thought so too. It was close.

We were well in the game all day as our kicking in the first half flattered Footscray. But it still took a hell of a fightback all the same. Nigel Smart and Darren Jarman were huge for us.
...and Rehn stripping the 'mattress' he had around his leg was symbolic in a 'throw caution to the wind' way.

I was sitting just above our cheer squad and many, many others who travelled, and I still smile when they all turned around to face the stadium and chanted long and loudly, 'we hate you coz you're all Victorian). 10000 plastic beer cups then rained down upon them which simply encouraged them. I've not heard support for our team reach those decibels outside of SA before or since. Even the following week didn't reach the same heights.

I've never left a stadium more elated in my life.

Spot on

WB fans shouldn't forget that the Bulldog players halted celebrations to check what the goal umpire signalled. Even they needed to wait and see because it was so close.

Their celebrations had a strong whiff of wanting it to be a goal. Like trying to convince a cricket umpire that there was a snick behind with a vociferous, all-in appeal

I dont think it was as close as many believe. When I say close, I mean a decision that could have gone the other way. It was made to appear close because the dogs were celebrating but they were kicking into the sun I believe in the final quarter and I just dont think Libba or his team mate saw where it went other than the general direction of the goals. No one else or the crowd were celebrating. Just appeared that way on TV because they were watching the players celebrate. Libba wasnt even shocked when it was called a point. lol. Tells you really he had NFI.

I can still remember seeing it in the air and thinking its missed. It was well above the "short" goal posts of the era and my vantage point was similar to 1st slip seeing a possible lbw. So a pretty good position.

Agree with you about the appeal aspect of the Footscray guys.

Regardless I dont think it was the big difference maker had it been a goal. There is every likely hood we could have still won the game under different circumstances. I think the bigger difference maker was Hudsons lack of awareness to protect grant having a shot at goal late in the quarter right after the crows hit the front.

I think that was the great Stiffy Johncock tackle on GAJ game was it not?

Found it:
