My Round 1 side:

B: J Worrell - J Butts - M Michalanney
HB: W Milera - N Murray - L Nankervis
C: I Cumming - J Rachele - A Neal-Bullen
HF: C Ah Chee* - D Fogarty - EDIT - C Edwards
F: B Keays - R Thilthorpe - L Pedlar
R: L McAndrew - J Dawson - J Soligo
Int: B Cook - Z Taylor - J Peatling - R Laird - F Maley

Emg (from): B Dowling* - T Walker - R O’Brien - S Berry - M Hinge - H Bond - T Murray - M Marsh

Unavailable:
D Curtin - M Keane - S Draper - I Rankine

Absolutely no business being in Round 1 calculations unless a plague hits:
C Jones - L Sholl - A Ludowyke - T Welsh - J Borlase - O Ryan - I Cotton

* Pending Ah Chee’s hamstring diagnosis - if he’s properly torn it, he’ll be out and Dowling would be my replacement. If it’s just tightness or a strain, he should be fine for Rd 1.

Realistically it seems as though Berry will play Rd 1 despite proving beyond any doubt that he’s not an AFL midfielder’s arse hole for the past few years. Cant wait to marvel at his 13 possessions, poor footskills and the fact that he’s not even a good tackler anymore. He no doubt gets made to look pretty good at training by the complete lack of midfield depth in the squad but expecting this guy to do anything consistently worthwhile at AFL level at this point is madness. D-Mac levels of whipping boy status incoming.

Seems like one (but only one) of Maley, Walker and T Murray will play most or all of the time when Thilthorpe and Fogarty are both fit. I’ll give Maley the nod initially for a month to prove his worth and reassess. From a team balance standpoint, we probably need his effort, grunt and contested marking more than Tex’s finesse if we’re being serious (bearing in mind what we saw from Tex late in 2025 which suggested to me he’s probably got about half a dozen decent AFL games left in him). T Murray seems like more of a second half of the season proposition if he strings together some consistent sanfl form.

Z Taylor plays as a midfielder in my side (instead of Berry). Not a half forward. He’s wasted there, especially with Ah Chee on board. The reality is likely that Nicks either plays Taylor at half forward or not at all.

Cook’s kicking skills are vital IMO. He is literally the best field kick in the entire squad. Getting the ball in his hands as a distributor from half back is well overdue. I would play both him and Nankervis over Hinge. Cook will make a huge difference from kick-ins, in addition to hitting up targets in the forward half with 55m lasers. Let’s hope he’s able to sort out his issues with staying focused on-field and actually stick in the side. Give him a month. The payoff will be well worth it if it comes off.

I think ANB is a nice fit on a wing. Can take care of the opposition’s most dangerous outside mid, and work through the midfield at times. I thought he should’ve played more midfield and wing minutes last season than he did, and the Curtin injury and Ah Chee acquisition really opens this up for him in 2026.

Other than Dowling, the guy outside my 23 I’m keen to see play senior footy early in 2026 is Edwards. I don’t really know where his best position is yet but I’d sure as hell rather see him play literally anywhere than any of Berry, O’Brien, Hinge, Sholl, Jones or Borlase.

Rankine is suspended round 1.

Who you putting in for him?

Loving the talk of Cook :hearts:

Before he got concussed last year he had some really underrated games and his kicking is sublime. Half back or wing he could be a real weapon this year.

Not at AFL level.

His first AFL game last year was the game he got concussed. He then followed it up with a 10 touch game against the Power and a 1 touch game against the Hawks.

He is a great ball user. Question is and will be whether he can get enough of the ball to justify putting him on the park.

Anyone thinking Tex is set for a reduced role had better think again. Will again be controlling the forward line and directing teammates where they need to run. We’re going to be no less Tex focussed with entries this year and he’s not going to be any kind of playing coach in the 2s. He’s going to be our number 1 leading target again.

I don’t have any idea what club you support, but it certainly isn’t the Adelaide Crows. Every single post you make is somehow negative towards a player, coach or administrator.

Laugh all you want 1970crow. Your opinion regarding the crows is irrelevant based on your trolling.

You just have to roll with him, its unhealthy to be so cynical at his age, but he has a good footy brain.

There's no question Tex will have a reduced role this year. I mean he only missed 2 games last year which wasnt enough.

He wont play as many game this year

Fair enough.

Would have thought quoting Tex himself is more relevant, where he talks about a reduced number of games...

Time will tell though.

Nice edit, if only I could laugh again.

That’s not how the advertiser interview with Wrinkles makes it sound. I don’t think he’ll be missing many more than the 2 he did last year. Based on Nicks’ words, it sounds like he doesn’t think the forward line is capable of functioning properly without Tex there to direct it.

I don’t think I’m that cynical. Reality is that we’ve got a fair bit of ground to make up and most discussions centre around areas of improvement/contention. I probably posted as many times as anyone in the positives thread, but there’s no entertainment discussing what everyone agrees with.

Do we get a lot of things right, absolutely, but so does every club. The difference between genuinely contending and just existing is what you do on the margins. And that’s where, in my view, we regularly get it wrong.

It will. He said similar the last couple of years, I distinctly recall him saying ‘quality over quantity’. And then when asked on MMM about the trip to Perth, he was saying he absolutely wanted to play and was ready to go. Laird was the same on SEN during the week he was rested, said his body pulled up better than it had all year. When push comes to shove, the hands are always up in the air and public pressure is being applied.

Can't disagree & proof will be in the number of games he plays.

His body is now showing though that he can't play all games, so hopefully both he & the selectors get smarter about his games management. Ie. Less games, but greater output per game

We finished top last year, and we played extremely poorly against Collingwood and then Hawthorn.

But we were missing Rankine and Rachele, Dawson was under duress with a leg injury. That’s not an excuse but a fact. With those 3 at full fitness, the result are potentially different. As a club, the improvement is still going in a northerly direction.

I’m thinking top 6, and we have every chance to make top 4 again.

Imo, we are most likely to be in the 3rd to 6th range, but can easily change as half the competition are relatively evenly matched.

I think we also need him to play as a 3rd tall and not have the most number of entries directed to. The worrying bit was Nicks talking about how important he is to controlling the movement of the forward line. Can we change to having TT and Fog being the primary lead up targets, with Tex pushing himself into a peripheral role?

Time will tell. But I expect him to miss no more than 4 or 5 games. Fitness permitting, I’d live to see Marsh play as the 3rd tall when Tex rests. As long as his attitude is right in the 2s, I’m not fussed whether he’s dominating that level.

We’re not the only team with injuries. We started playing poorly before Rankine was suspended and Rachele being our only best 23 player missing. The thing with Dawson (and Soligo and Curtin) struggling is that it’s entirely predictable because that’s what we’ve always done. We push injured or running on fumes players to the edge because we value continuity above everything else. Dawson played an away game against Eagles and Roos in 2 of our last 3 games of the minor round. If you can’t rest an injured player against 2 of the bottom 3, then you’re really not a genuine contender. And what if we had dropped one of those, big deal, we finish second instead of third.

The same thing is almost certain to happen again if we play finals next year. We’ll be using players playing under duress as a ‘reason’ we lost.

Cool. I’m going to go to the footy this feeling good about our chances, instead of writing our chances off in ****ing February.
