Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

Awesome to see him and Dalton buddying up. They can both learn a lot from each other!

....If you're slow, then 99% of the times you will remain slow, even if you improve, unless you had latent ability that was muted because extremely poor technique.
Yes, that's my understanding of it, folks with deficient techniques gain the most (assuming correction). In the AFL context they already do a lot of training drills to increase strength & explosivity (white fibre muscle recruitment), so they all get 'sprint' training, the draftees over a few years will improve to varying degrees. Fingers crossed that Ollies perceived deficiencies can be corrected.

In the end you can't beat your genes. Red versus white, the numbers set by god! As you get older you become more aware of that, as you begin suffering all those ills of your parents.

I just laugh at the constant suggestions like:
  • get him a sprint coach
  • pair him up with x player = plays like x player

Like bro, yeah, the club has development coaches and conditioning staff!

If you're good with the ball, you don't have to be quick, hitting a guy on the chest 50 m downfield who is on the run at full tilt is worth more than an extra 1.6 seconds over 100m

But if yiu can do both, helllllllllllllllllo Norm Smith medal winner!

The foundation for an elite mid in the modern game is clean hands, that’s the only non-negotiable. If you’re even a touch double-grabby, like Worpel, you’re not going to get near the AA team.

Movement is very important too, but just talking about speed, agility and endurance is not specific enough. I think there’s a whole raft of things that come into play as well which are practically unquantifiable like: composure, coordination, spatial awareness, efficiency of movement, game understanding, connection to team-mates, ability to anticipate opponents.

It would be fascinating to understand more deeply why teams with star-studded midfields in Carlton, Sydney, Port, Melbourne and the Bulldogs found themselves getting scored heavily against in transition at times this year, and didn’t make the finals.

Was interesting to hear Sam Cumming described by recruiters as the prototype modern midfielder. Explosiveness, contested ball and work rate

To clear things up.

Can Ollie kick accurately on his left?

The question has been asked as he often straightens-up to use right foot.

So does he have talent on his left foot? Hell Yes ... and it is already very good. His left ball drop could be improved but it is technically sound. He is not yet Sam Mitchell-level ambidextrous... but I think he will get there

Would like to see Ollie spend some time with Uncle Jack on leading patterns and forward craft this year. I think he's going to kick some clutch goals for us over the years looking at some more of his draft footage. He looks like the perfect bull to swap in and out with Jai Newcombe.

In relation to tank, I think he has to play to his strengths here but also use (legal) technology.

Heat training is giving tour riders that extra 1% marginal gains and it makes complete sense for him to replicate that type of training regime over his first year assuming the new facilities have a control environment.

Very interesting lineage when you look into it. His great great grandma also dated Tom Wills for a period of time.

Geelong still haven't squared the ledger for us giving them Gary Ablett. This could be it.

This pic overstates it, but he is indeed very pigeon-toed.

Damn.

Surely they can fix this in the strength and conditioning room, I'm just stunned to see that he's gotten all the way to the big time with something so obviously hampering his ability to move efficiently.

The human body is incredibly malleable. I hope someone can work with him, and unlock a big boost in speed.

Olympic sprinters who tried to run with their feet rotated internally like that, would probably run as fast as he does.

Yeah but for how long do you have the ball in a game, a few minutes if lucky?

I'm not buying into how bad, or good, Greeves running is until I see it in games ... But he will need to be able to transition defensively and not get torched by his midfield opponent if he's going to make it.

Huss dominates at VFL level, probably come in with a better tank, but he can't go with the opposition mids defensively and it's held him back

A lot of top athlete's are pigeon toed and it actually gives them an advantage in change of direction and rapid acceleration/deceleration.

Michael Jordan being a famous example of this.

I've known a lot of good junior players that were also pigeon toed. How it translates in the AFL I don't know, probably less and an advantage and a potential issue. It can lead to more knee and ankle injuries which Jordan had his share of too.

I’m 100% in the camp that if you don’t take the ball one grab when it’s in your area you won’t survive at AFL level. And I look at Harry M who does exactly this and has good disposal and is a good runner but has limitations in his game but he has so far carved out a career at the top level.

There are plenty slipping through the cracks... 👀

I have Ollie was quite the stand-up in match sim with his ball use.

Would have liked it more if he was a stand-out, but comedy definitely does have its place on the footy field.

It's why we still have clubs like North, Carlton, Essendon etc.

As this pre season progresses the more I see of Ollie the more I think he will be a steal.

He has great composure in traffic and follows that with great skill. His kicking inside 50 is sublime. Some of our other players only wish they could execute like him. Can't wait to watch him play at Box hill or even the trial game to really see how he plays in game. It will give us a much better indication of his future, but I have high hopes.

seems he may have already gone past HH as our big, slow midfielder. Has the added benefit of being capable as a forward.

Early days and its only preseason training, however, he appears to be travelling better than expected, according to track watches.

I guess at least HH has no 3 preseasons in body development as opposed to Ollie.
