Absolutely crazy shit! Bloody sad stuff
Yeah, this is going to provoke a lot of fear and rage. Nothing good can come from something like this.

So sad that many families won’t have a love one returning home tonight or ever.

How about that hero dude who tackled the dude with the gun. So brave. I would have smashed the campaigner with it.

Yeah, very brave and restrained enough not to just shoot the murderer once he got the gun off him.

Yeah. I don’t think most people would be able to pull the trigger even in anger for others mate. Taking someone else’s life would live with you forever. He did the right thing to refrain

I flew in from a holiday last night and was pretty offline until this morning. So shocking and sad. How on earth did these guys get guns like that in Australia?

Someone says that about gun control every time there is a shooting.
It is inane. That level of evil will get whatever weapons they want.
We we lucky their pipe bombs didn't work.

Someone totally should be talking about gun control every time there is a shooting.

People bent on destruction will find a way to destroy, but there is no good reason to make the task easier for them.

I'm not sure I fully get what you're saying. That this is the first incident like this since Port Arthur is a testament to our rigorous gun laws. Gun laws need to be routinely examined and amended to ensure they are fit for purpose.

After consuming some news it sounds like the owner of the guns had a number of gun licences for many years without incident. Sounds like this was methodically planned over a long period.

i think most people would be surprised how easy it is to actually get guns like the ones used in yesterday's cowardly attack.

my mate bought a shotgun and a rifle a few years back and he doesn't even need or use them.
you've got to fill out the paperwork and store them correctly but unless you have a criminal record then you're pretty well set.
he actually had a charge of possessing an unlicensed firearm from about 20 odd years ago when he was younger but was able to get it expunged off his record after ten years.

Easier than it should be, but a LOT fewer people die in a country with ongoing and strict licensing rules. And yeah, these laws need to be regularly reviewed for currency and guns sold should be subject to ongoing monitoring (for example, where records indicate that an individual is accumulating firearms while having no work-related reason need to be investigated. Does a random in the suburbs with no property even need one, let alone half a dozen, guns?)

This never fails to astonish me - the difference between the US and other similarly developed countries and your likelihood of being shot.

Lmao don't give me that "gun control.doesnt stop shooting" bullshit.
Imagine how ****ing brutal yesterday woulda been if those flogs had semi automatic weapons. Ffs.

Anyway on a more positive note, bought this thing yesterday:

Fits in the palm of my hand.

Called it Dorothy or Dot which I'm.a bit annoyed with. I wanted to name it Zucchini Fritter or Zooki for short but got outvoted.

I like that you’ve got him sleeping on some sort of wood chip mulch. A spot of fertiliser and he will grow to two metres

Yeah not sure why any random should have a bunch of rifles in the suburbs. Feel like since the use of personal guns is pretty much exclusively in the countryside and bush that's probably where they should be stored.

I’m trying to recall which country it is - but they require hobbiest shooters to vault their guns at secure storage at the rifle range. You can’t even keep them securely stored at home (no doubt this annoys weirdos who like to admire their guns and regularly fondle them with oil or whatever gun people do, but **** them).

US with their looney laws even mount yearly stats on “child on child” shootings. Not just gang stuff either. Little kids playing and getting a hold of a revolver isn’t the least unknown.

When something is to hand, sooner or later it gets used. I got mugged in US once so some nice person got me mace to carry. I carried it once and was totally unnerved. I had my hand gripped tight around it and every time I heard a noise I swung around ready to spray it at some innocent passer by. Also the lawful sale of pepper spray is dead stupid. If people can buy it for self defence, others can buy it for violent attack. How easy to rob or assault someone if you first spray them in the face and incapacitate them?

i'm only going off what my mate told me at the time, but he said he had to have some paperwork from a farmer saying he was allowed to shoot on his property to get the gun license, but my mate never even met this farmer, and that paperwork was already sorted by the gun supplier when he bought the guns.
i know it sounds dodgy as, but apparently, that's all above board. they even use the same farmers over and over so the cops must know about it and obviously don't have a problem with it.
and another weird thing was that for some reason you buy the guns first, then you can apply to get the licences for them while the supplier holds onto them, which seems like a bit of a backwards type situation as well.

Sounds like not enough resources for regulation rather than issues with the law. No doubt law enforcement have plenty of issues with it but you can only follow up what your staffing numbers can manage in a working day.

Risk issues get triaged. You’d be surprised how many serious criminal networks are known about by government agencies, but investigation caseloads have to prioritise. Crooks know it too

Dot is so 1920’s, quality name.

Had a couple of great aunts named Dot.

I feel like an old names we like chat would be fun.

Is that a cavalier king charles?

If so, I had a similar colour one as a kid. They're the nicest dogs. Got his name tattooed on my leg

Cavoodle! (King Charles/Poodle cross).

We got it from a mate who has a farm that breeds cavs as well. I didn't get much say in what we came home with tho 😂

I’ve been visiting rental properties the past week. My current landlord is selling.

My key finding is that owners are taking the piss with prices these days.

I can share some learnings re advertising descriptions versus reality. There’s basically a code that becomes apparent quickly. Let’s take a 3bdr as an example:

“Dynamic lifestyle” - on corner block of main road, directly behind train lines or both.

“Cozy” - tiny.

“convenient” - next door to gas station.

“Vibrant” - plenty of local drug dealers.

“Suit professionals” - got recently trashed by children, four dogs and tenants stopped paying rent.

“Easy going lifestyle” - unrenovated, comes with complimentary wine stains, peeling Lino, deceased bicycle frames, mould etc.

“Lock up and leave” - no storage and surrounded in AirBNB.

“Tranquil” - random rural property misplaced by Domain.com

“Character” - don’t even bother.

“Functional kitchen” - two electric plug-in hot plates and an old table

“Some furniture included” - previous tenants left the worst of their crap and owner can’t be arsed removing it

“Welcoming” - freakishly bad colour scheme.

A basic rule is the more exclamation marks in the ad, the more disappointing the property

Recently bought a place and these equally apply to houses for sale. Prices have also gone bananas especially with the 5% deposit scheme changes adding more demand.

At least in Canberra even the main roads are dead 90% of the time and no trains to make a racket. Still, plenty of dismal, overpriced old joints with paper mache walls to freeze in over winter.

Yeah I’m getting better at not settling with something where I have reservations. Whenever I’ve said “she’ll be right” she basically hasn’t become right.

Congrats on finding a home though! That’s really great

Could be a fun thread in this. Match the description to the picture.
