Long time no talk grandparents. I signed the lease for my Perth rental the other day. Spent all day setting up utilities accounts and stuff, this whole adulting thing is awful.

Any tips from the oldies re decorating rentals? Obviously its all about communication but as someone with dire interior decorating skills I want to avoid feeling uncomfortable in my own home.
Hi Tiby, whatever you do I would drill as many holes as possible in walls, your landlord will love it

A couple of cinder blocks and some plywood for your coffee table, hang some prints on the wall, plug a lava lamp in the corner and chuck a beanbag somewhere. Bob's your uncle.
I have actually seen a friend who bought his first unit last year with basically this exact set up. 20 year old uni student special.

I appreciate the advice!

Anytime mate, here to help.

In all seriousness can you actually do much decorating in a rental? Back in my day you couldn't do f**k all without permission from the owner.

I believe a lot of rental rules have changed in the last decade or so to be more tenant friendly. I would think that anything that increases property value would surely be allowed but then again I'm not some rich prick landlord. I do know its really hard for them to say no to pets these days

Honestly, I wouldn't be spending too much coin on anything that increases the value of someone else's property. You could also find yourself in a position where you have to vacate the premises at some point due to the owner moving in, selling, whatever. Just hang a few photo frames and a clock somewhere, leave it at that.

Extra points if you swipe the cinder blocks from the site of a future children’s hospital.

How'd you find your place? Is the rental market still completely cooked?

Dunno about this, not my experience at least. Depends on the landlord I suppose but in my last sharehouse (which was semi-recent) we weren’t even allowed to put those removable hooks on the walls without specific approval for each one.

How do people with full time jobs and young families (7 years and 3 years) keep a regular gym/exercise schedule?
I used to go running at night after the kids were asleep. Then about 18 months ago I tripped in a laneway, landed on my shoulder and snapped all the ligaments (Grade 5 AC - think season ending AC joint that affects the next season too).

It's very hard to get back in to it.

Let it evolve over time. Worry about getting all the functional stuff in place first, then fill in the gaps with shiny and colourful stuff as you find it.

As others have mentioned, know your rights about putting holes in walls. And even if you're a black thumb like me, do think about some fake plants to add some greenery. It's nice to have some, even if it's not real.

I'm (somewhat ashamedly) a fan of the Avatar movies - I know there's not much substance to them and they're kinda hollow and regurgitated, I just try not to take them too seriously. The first one was a heap of eye-candy fun with some average acting and I really enjoyed it, think I saw it once standard and once 3D.

Second one was just more of the same, but instead of in the sky it was in the water and now they had kids. Still really enjoyed it, but not quite as much as the first. Again, just enjoy the ride and don't think too much about it.

The third is 3+ hours of steaming shit. There were points when watching it where I genuinely thought I was just watching parts of the second again. It's long, lame and predictable. So disappointing and I have no idea how they could even consider making 2 more movies after this one.

Indeed. Pure product for consumption. People must like it though. Hey Bender_ ?

Of course, merely sharing my opinion which I think is relevant due to being a big fan of the first 2.

100% agree - was disappointed with the rehashed segments of the movie but I still loved it nonetheless 😊

Mate, they're all literally the same.

At least the third one gave me vivid dreams of a fire priestess giving me an absolute going over in a drug tent/midland traino bathroom.

She's played by the late Mrs Robb Stark, which helps.

So the US has started attacking/bombing Venezuela

I’m not going to even begin to pretend I know why

But welcome to 2026

You could apply the same to the Transformers and Fast and Furious franchises which keep farting those out as well

I assume it begins with O and rhymes with Boyle.

Crazy in the head, crazy in the bed.
