For all those long suffering Carlton supporters, there is some good news to provide you. There is a new book out called Champions of Carlton.

Why is this good news?

Well for starters one can be reminded of some of the greatest who have worn the old dark navy blue guernsey.
Where else will you get to be reminded of:

1- Jesaulenko's outstanding marks, and that's not just the 1970 GF leap

2- the deeds in finals of Johnston, Harmes and others

3- what Nicholls sacrificed for his team (for details on this...I guess you will just have to buy the book) ;)

If you want some info. on the book, you can listen to this radio interview.

Here is the cover. I already did a book winning contest on X ...maybe one to follow on BigFooty?
We'll see.

Ok, I couldn't help it. There's a competition to win a book!

It's an Olympics level competition (except there's no running, years of training or exercise required).

First to get these questions right is the winner. Post your response in this thread.

q1 - In what finals match did Wayne Harmes kick four goals? One of his goals was met with the response from the ABC commentator of, "How did he kick that one?"... a lengthy pause.... "I don't know".

q2 - What finals matches did Wayne Johnston miss in 1982? Any idea why he missed?

q3 - Kouta won the AFL MVP in 2000. Kevin Bartlett in his commentary during a match from that season stated, "How many Koutoufides' are playing today?" What team did Carlton play that resulted in this comment from Bartlett?

q4 - How many premiership teams was Ken Baxter a member of?

Awesome stuff.

Congrats on the publication.

For those looking for a link, it's on Booktopia: https://www.booktopia.com.au/champi...JzchCr0pVv1xxfoayHJIptUa7QCp-ppQaAvQHEALw_wcB

Miles, if you have a preferred purchase site please share it and I'll delete my post.

All good Wickzki.

I believe it is in Avenue Books, Robinsons bookstores, Dymocks in Collins St, Camberwell etc, Farrell's in Mornington, Avenue's Albert Park and in WA at Boffins...

Robinsons' in Highpoint have already sold a bundle as I spoke to someone there yesterday.

Should be in most good bookstores, and possibly some not so good ones too.

Also have a website set up if that's an option...but it is slightly more expensive.

Q1: - Wayne Harmes kicked 4 goals in the 1982 Qualifying Final against Hawthorn including one from the boundary line which I was sitting right in line with and it never looked like missing.

Q2: Wayne Johnston missed the Second Semi Final and Preliminary Final in 1982 due to being found guilty of striking David Polkinghorne of Hawthorn in the Qualifying Final - who basically went against the (then) players code and dobbed him in.

Q3: I never remember anything that Kevin Bartlett says especially about Carlton - so I cant answer this question. :p

Q4: Ken Baxter was a member of the 1938, 1945 and 1947 Premiership Teams.

Perhaps I could get a 75% discount book voucher please. :p:p:p:p:p:p

1. 1982 Qualifying Final.
2. Striking David Polkinhorne. Missed the 2nd semi final, and Prelim final.
3. Round 11 2000, Nth Melbourne.
4. 3

1 - 1982 Qualifying Final
2 - Semi Final & Preliminary Final. Suspension.
3 - North Melbourne (guess)
4 - 3

Not unless there is a reference to “a box seat”.

Agro, I like your sense of humour. I can't send you 75% of a book as it will be too difficult to cut up into pieces. I would need to purchase one of those paper guillotines and by the time I pay for one I might as well send you a complete book....unless you want me to cut out pages?

There is a colour photo of Buzz in there taking a mark vs. Richmond - was tempted to cut it out as a result of the 75% quota, but I'll send the complete book instead.

PM your address and I'll send one to Baggers too.

Yeah fire up a giveaway on here.

Can I just put a plug in for Miles’ book ‘Champions of Carlton’ - the photos alone are reason enough to buy this book and insights into players you may have heard but never really appreciated like Ken Baxter, Fred Davies and Jack Howell are brilliant.

The interview with Brent Crosswell alone is worth the price of admission.

Miles also has the unique ability to uncover or highlight things about the history of our club that have been in plain sight that really contributed to the success of our Golden Age between 1968 and 1987.

As Molly Meldrum used to say go out and do yourselves a favour and but it. 😉

Have received my copy that I won on here & have to echo Agro's comments 100%.
This book is a must for any Blues fans, especially those that love their history.
Congratulations Miles on such a great book and thank you again 🙏

Thanks Agro & Baggers,

Yeah, the photos were a key element to the book in terms of ensuring they were in colour. All up, over 100 images were colourised as even up to the 1980s they used black and white images.

With certain players, such as Wayne Harmes, I didn't want to go over what has been put in the Football Record, newspapers and in books 1000 times and that was what he did in the 1979 GF. For me, he almost matched '79 in 1982... those four goals he kicked in the qualifying final were simply outstanding, so at the back of my mind I was thinking all the time...ensure there is something new in this book.

Thanks for mentioning the Baxter, Davies and Howell chapters Agro ! I put a bit of work into those ones.

Just an update on the Champions book, sales have been good! I was in the QBD bookstore last week in Geelong (Westfield) after spending some time down on the Great Ocean Road and they had sold out. Other stores in the city, Readings and Collins are doing brisk business....so I hope all the True Blue Baggers out there have a copy. This guy, you might remember him, four-time premiership player, enjoyed the book. You might too.
