God I miss Fyfe in his prime. No one could boss a game the way he did. Genuinely in the Carey, Hird etc all time greats at playing the game at another level to anyone else when it counted.
Huuuuge hyperbole.

Those guys won premierships and basically did it all themselves.

Fyfe was a great player but not pretty to watch. Carey and Hird were like a symphony.

[PLAYERCARD]Lachie Neale[/PLAYERCARD] will be a free agent so he can go where he wants, except Port - who will not want to lose their top five pick for losing Butters (if they don't match and force a trade, which will be team depending - do they want pick #5 from the AFL or pick #18, #25, #20 as three first round picks from the team he goes to?)

Lachy is 32 now and the numbers suggest he is past his peak (obviously a very high one). It doesn't mean he is about to be on the scrapheap, its just that its hard to see how he would be a better player than one of our own best three or four starting inside mids by then, and he can't rotate.

Has to be West Coast if he plays on.

[PLAYERCARD]Lachie Neale[/PLAYERCARD] to South Freo. You read it here first*.

*may not be 100% accuracte but you definitely read it here first

Don't really see a point in Eagles getting him. Will be 33 and they should be better of getting games into younger players. Only leadership/guidance would be a point to get him.

And with us? When our midield developes as wanted he should find it hard to get a spot. But perhaps handy depth/Sub.

But don't see him as a priority for both clubs. He wants to go back west, but when nobody wants him, what will he do? Haing said that, it still feels very unlikely a player of his profile won't get a list spot...

I’m neither heavily for or against bringing back Neale but I do find it funny how some are scoffing at the idea at bringing in a x2 Brownlow medallist and x2 premiership captain who might feel like he has unfinished business at Freo. If (big if) the price is right you definitely entertain the prospect. More likely to end up at West Coast if he does move though.

Every premiership team in history has had a few flogs, if you expect footballers to be beacons of morality you will be disappointed.

Hm... 33 years old, too similar to Serong, coming off a serious calf injury, now has the extra travel burden of being at a WA club. I wonder why people think thats a risk.

Thats before you consider them being a shit bloke

The cliff is coming but I reckon he’s still got time. This is the guy who just 3 months ago came on in the 2nd half of a granny with a dodgy calf and dominated, almost single-handedly swinging the momentum Brisbane’s way.

Still a lot to play out obviously. Assess his performances over the coming season and revisit this conversation in 6 months time. All I’m saying is the club wouldn’t be doing its due diligence if they don’t at least entertain the idea.

Fyfe was 10x more washed, if we could find a spot for him I reckon we could for Neale.

He could just hang up the boots and come over to us as an assistant coach?

Surely that's better than playing your last years for the dumpster fire up the road?
Part of the appeal of playing under Fagan was an offer to transition into coaching in time. That may have changed since then, but it was in his mind at the time he originally moved

Yes, but now we have to give Bruce more midfield time. Johnson midfield time. I would hazard a guess that the main reason Ras re-signed is because he has been guaranteed more midfield minutes. NOD will get midfield time. Then you add in Young, Brayshaw, Serong, and Jackson and there are far less midfield spots going now than when we tried to give Fyfe, a club legend, a fairy-tale send-off. There is no world in which Neale should be coming in and taking midfield minutes from anyone.

I mean this in the least disrespectful way to Johnson/Erasmus/NOD but you didn’t see Brisbane playing Deven Robertson over Neale.

If we are in the premiership window (and I believe we are and that window is finite) you do everything you can to maximise your chances of winning a premiership and if that means playing an older, experienced, proven player over brooding younger talent then you do that. If the younger talent is good enough, they will force their way into the team, if not they bide their time, and that time will come because in this hypothetical scenario Neale has obviously only got a couple years left at most.

Again to preface, I’m not necessarily in the pro-Neale camp, and there’s every chance his body could break down this season or the scandal affects his mental, but I’m not as dismissive of the idea as others.

I'm a fan. I don't have to be rational.

**** him.

I will continue to scoff.

Darcy Tucker spotted at Carlton training. Yes please.

It could work under the following circumstances:
  • Brayshaw can play significant Wing rotation (winger than runs into the midfield - bit like Ras late last season)
  • Replacement for JOM
  • as free agent selection with no draft picks involved
  • reasonable salary reflective of senior player in twilight of career.
