It'll be a flop .....supporters won't follow kicks & giggles games ....there has to be a genuine contest, genuine want to win .....it can't be manufactured, and the Clubs don't want that type of game

This will go the same way as AFLX game that the AFL was deadset serious about creating for overseas markets ....supporters sniffed a furphy

IF the industry goes the same as the NBA ....and players call the shots over Clubs, then SOO is a possibility to resurrect

You have literally got this 180 degree around the wrong way.

The AFL are paying the player $50,000 to play, but prior to that the players didn’t want to play and would find the smallest reason to pull out.

$50K huh ......given annual Contracts of $900K - $1.2M .....we can simply call it, "appearance money"

SOO has never been about the Players Pay .....there was a them versus us mentality, driven by enormous fan interest building the event up

I don't see that same emotion around the upcoming SOO game .....it'll be more "I hope my player doesn't get injured"

I totally agree with you. The passion of SOO ended in the early 1990’s, and without any financial incentive the concept will die.

Clubs don’t want it, players don’t want it and if most are being honest, supporters probably don’t want it. Avoiding injuries will be the key.

And I just dont see where that financial incentive will come from? There just isnt the money available in AFL to prop up a couple of stand alone games.

46 players x $50,000= $2,300,000

With respect to the average punter as that’s life changing money, but to the AFL that small change.

They will find a few sponsors, the AFL would have marketing and promotional budgets where the money could come from. Ticket sales, uniforms sales, the money won’t be hard to find.

Under its current set up yeah its likely to flop. It smacks of a tokenistic gesture designed to fail. One of the best ways to get the crowd interested is having earned call ups. Is a preseason game under these circumstances where its based on rep rather than earned is probably not going to end well.

Is a preseason game under these circumstances where its based on rep rather than earned is probably not going to end well.

The rules for call ups don't matter. There is no juice in it now for the same reason there was no juice in it when they phased it out in the early-mid 90s. Nobody views football as a state thing anymore aside from a few oldies. The kind of people that barrack for both Port and the Crows.
