If they go the surgery route, that would be atleast 6 months out. Honestly makes me feel sick.

We'd be looking at round 20 return date.

Now im thinking contract wise, what do we do for will. We all love him, but his body is currently not working in his favour.

I know this may sound crazy, shut him down til 2027. Get good physical conditioning in him.
It’s not 6 months, it’s entirely dependent on what surgery is actually required

wtf

Completely dependent on the surgery but it would almost certainly require a shoulder stabilisation, with a soft tissue or more likely a Laterjet procedure, both of which are typically a touch over 6 months return to play.

That’s dependant on wether surgery is actually required

This isn’t a repetitive injury, which a Laterjet is mainly used for to prevent reoccurrence.

Wait and see I guess. But after the club's release I'd be shocked if surgery isn't required.

Really feel for Will.

Sam has said it, we have a workman like midfield. Will is that real X-factor with size and speed we need to burst from stoppage. I hope we just go all in on Weddle through there now.

This is the white flag stuff I was just writing about.

Our sports psych team will have him champing at the bit to play his this year.

There’s a recent paper showing a 19% recurrence rate of instability in AFL players post soft tissue stabilisation, 0% with Laterjet so there’s now a lower threshold and greater indication to do a Laterjet rather than the soft tissue stabilisation, which historically has been the preference. There’s also variability between surgeons.

I hope he avoids surgery but if he doesn’t 6 months is the most likely outcome.

Which are all cases on reoccurrence ( Ablett, Fyfe etc)

Your not removing and being that invasive on a first time dislocation, especially if there was no bone damage

I’m not familiar enough with Will’s shoulder history to say whether he’s had instability issues before (his injury in 2024 was unrelated), the point I was making is that IF he has surgery, 6 months is about right for return to play.

If he has no history of instability then I agree there is a good argument to see how he goes non operatively, but we do know that his chance of redislocation is >90%.

Laterjet is becoming more and more prominent in sports as a first line treatment because of its predictable results and almost zero risk of redislocation. Happy to continue that discussion with you via PM if you like, not looking to clog your preseason training board other than to provide an insight into the injury and sequelae and wish Will a speedy recovery.

Will this extra time on the sidelines at least have benefit for the health of his foot? Similar to the extended lay off for ACLs reducing the chance of re-injury.

I posted this in the Will Day thread, and I hope it's OK for me to post this here as well. But after seeing Day re-injure himself again, I felt compelled to put something in writing in an attempt to make sense of it, but also as my way of dealing with it (I'm weird).

If anyone's interested: As a Physio, here's why I think we often miss the bigger picture with injuries - especially in sport, why Kane Cornes may be an idiot, and what I'd be looking out for if I were ever lucky enough to get my hands on Day and help him sort this out for good. If anyone can get me in that position, I'd be eternally grateful too, btw!

Basically, the things we tend to blame for injury - age, overuse, bad luck, etc, are typically NOT the issues they appear to be. They are, however, pretty good at exposing hidden underlying issues we take into things. In Will's case, it was certainly brutal, but unfortunately also potentially preventable based on what I see clinically.

Either way, please give it a read if you're keen and fingers crossed Will's back fighting fit again ASAP.

Yeah he'll get surgery, there not risking it this early in the year. Minimum 3 months with the surgery and rehab going well. As someone said silver lining it means he can make sure he's feet are cherry ripe/bullet proof, ready to go when he returns later in the year and can have real impact with us.

I’d take a shoulder over an ACL every day of the week- Will will bounce back bigger and better towards the end of the year
Bit sad but my feelings were the same: “Meh, doesn’t even crack the top 5 worst Will Day injury setback reports”.

Just get him ready to make a difference in the finals. That’s all we need him for.

Well this sucks and Will must be as frustrated as hell but hopefully Mackenzie and Ward can step up although as much as I think they are going to be very good players I don't think they will ever reach Day's ceiling.Watson on the other hand is a different matter, I'm hoping now we can just stick him in the middle permanently for a few games and let him make it his new home.

Plenty of positives 👍
yep, thought Ward went very well - he gets everywhere, covers the ground with pace and teammates believe in him and use him. He and Cam Mckenzie were working very well together in the match sim/s at centre clearances and stoppages -Great if they could form a good top level rapport as part of the (somewhat new look) mids team. new kid Schubert (being a good mark) was doing well as the release mark on the wing coming out of defence. LeRay is confident and coming along well for a youngster. Gunners and Ginni have been going well all pre-season so far and looking very fit. It can be seen that Calsher has built up a fair bit- especially legs and hips giving him added strength and stability. Scrim is going super playing with a lot of confidence and zest- great to see. Dalton and Greeves are working hard, learning the ropes and fitting in nicely. Everyone is working really hard showing great intensity and effort- from both Stanley and Perez up to TB, JB and the rest of the usual stars and stalwarts- Jai, Moorey Meek, Weddle, Nashie, Mass, Jars, Amon, Hardwick etc. Good to see Cholly back after illness, too.
