You are right, it is bullshit but AUKUS may have a bearing on what the Albanese Government decides. They may not want to risk upsetting Donald as you never know what he will do.

The Canadians just did a trade deal with China in which the Canadians will buy electric vehicles in return for favorable a export deal on Canadian primary produce. Trump responded by threatening Canada with 100% trade tariffs. There is no love lost between Trump and the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney who Trump, deliberately or otherwise, mistakenly calls 'Governor' Carney. Trump could do anything including cancelling AUKUS if things don't go his way.

I hope Australia says thanks, but no thanks however there are other things to consider.

The hypocrisy is wild.

It’s a fundamental tenet of their entire existence — freedom from tyranny, rising up against the jackbooted, “don’t tread on me” — and you have them in endless comments sections effectively victim-blaming Pretti for leaving his house.
 
It's been highlighted already by political commentators that the AUKUS deal doesn't actually guarantee us any subs, and it's more about us paying a tithe to the US for protection.

It's now blatantly obvious there's an insane fascist in charge whose whims change day to day, and the expectation we'll receive anything is bullshit. Indonesia could invade tomorrow and there's no longer any sort of guarantee the US would come to our aid.

In that context forking out close to a trillion for NOTHING is ****ing insane. We should crawl back to the french, send them scomo to publically humiliate, and try for euro subs instead.

Trump simply favours any leader
• who is strong, no matter what they do with that strength
• who can enrich Trump
• who will flatter him, no matter how phony it is.
As long as Putin, the war criminal, ticked those boxes Trump treated him as his friend. Putin never even had to work hard to make Trump his patsy.
