Farmer is one of the more underrated small forwards of the modern era who could have been one of the all time greats if it weren't for his off field issues, where do you think he played his best football? I personally think he was better at Melbourne probably due to his 2000 season sticking in my mind where he kicked 76 goals with the most notable game being on Queens Birthday where he got dragged by Neale Daniher and then kicked 9 goals in a half of footy after coming back onto the ground. For those who are not old enough to remember Jeff Farmer he was the first Indigenous player to kick 400 goals in the AFL and was known as The Wizard at a time when Nick Watson had yet to be born.

Unbelievable player. Could not have been more confident heading into the 2000 GF but that one little nagging, nervous worry was Farmer - had the ability to set a game alight. He played with broken ribs which wasn’t revealed until after, from memory. More than once had seen him take control of a game and absolutely tear it to pieces.

More importantly…did Roger Merrett play better for Essendon or the early Brisbane bears? Some say it was in Brisbane where he added the most value to his squad with dogged effort and old school leadership that inspired the young cubs.

Others will point out he was an extremely valuable weapon at Essendon who could cover ruck duties for Madden and then go forward and provide a formidable attacking marking option.

It’s all worth pondering.
