Game Day AAMI Community Series - Carlton v Geelong Game Day

Well done boys. With 2/2 great wins it’s a good preparation for the real dance next week. Hopefully we keep gelling with the new system over the start of the season and refine into a powerful surprising side to stun some sides.

Winning isn't a great indicator of where we're at but for getting the positive vibes going around the new group - the 2 wins are invaluable.

I'm a little bit worried about how often we bombed it long with a shallow forward entry. I saw a better game style against Brisbane. Won't judge too much off one match against Geelong who are well coached and know how to force that long bomb with Stewart or Guthrie loose behind the play.

On a positive note - I think it was Saad who mostly played on Close who is a real barometer for them. Saad kept him to 4 pos from nearly 80% game time.

Fogarty only the 29% TOG - hard to read too much into that in a practice game, you’d assume that’s planned?

Byrne was great for a half - can he contribute for 80 or so minutes yet though?

I reckon Ainsworth was involved in every single transition goal we kicked.

Does Derksen play over Young next week if Weitering is back?

Id say it’s Weitering Derkson and Young. Dean reserves.

Body shapes a little different this year?
Walsh and Boyd in particular looking more powerful
Probably the Rob Inness effect starting to show. Normally takes 12 odd months to start seeing results from a different fitness program

We seemed to be taking that very seriously while Geelong were in second gear. Can't take much out of that game. I'll wait for the real stuff before passing judgement.

Fair but I thought both sides went fairly hard for a pre season game.Effort was good

Our fitness was a highlight last night. We looked extremely sharp all game, and it was particularly evident in the last qtr as the game opened up. Zorko observed this as well in his comments a couple of days ago about the Bris game.

Really impressed with that. Obviously we’ll see if we’re sustainable but Inness program taking full effect?

Watching Smith play a full game was impressive. The way he ran out the game was incredible for a kid.

Last qtr we were watching Smith, Walsh, Lord, Ollie, Hewett and the ground they covered. They didn't stop and just kept running past oppponents even late in the game.

I can see us outworking sides this year

If our skills in some plays were just 1% sharper we’d have had 4-5 more goals; we worked that hard to spread and overlap to get in good positions

It was very ‘un-Carlton’ and I loved it

Agree. We made mistakes with our kicking but it is pre season. We were rusty. Positive was were trying things and were definitely looking to hit targets more

This change from bombing it will take time to get right

One thing is obvious we are very fit.
Agreed. Smith and Walsh are running machines. Makes them seem quicker than they are, especially in the back end of quarters.

My better half also noted, multiple times a quarter, that Cripps especially was in insanely good shape. She was even researching him to best examine how good a footballing condition he was in, I think.

Looks a bit lighter and covering the ground well

Reckon he and Boak might be working closely together to extend the prime of his career.

84% TOG and 16 centre bounce attendances makes me think he’s trying to push forward regularly and create a mismatch rather than rotate off the bench.

Just practice your goal-kicking, skip.

I think calling for Dean is unnecessary, very few KPs have been able to come straight in after year 12.

Young is ahead of him as at today, and him and Derksen a push. I get we’re all very excited but there is no need to rush him, let him develop in 2s

Normally agree but Dean is ready. Mentally he will thrive on it and can play on 2nd or 3rd tall. Playing him in Seniors next to Weitering is the way forward IMO

I would play Weitering Derksen & Dean as our 3 talls supported by runners

Same as he was doing in match sims. Playing a bit forward

It may seem counter intuitive but I am particularly pleased to see Harry go goalless in these games.

Defending Carlton has been such a simple job for opposition clubs due to the immense gravity of Harry (and previously CC), the playbook was simple collapse the defence on Harry and then peel the ball away. Of course if you have no other viable options you constantly fall into this trap.

The great part to watch has been multiple avenues being used to goal along with the obligatory bombs to Harrys head.

With multiple options the defence is obliged to spread in order to defend more of the 50 which will in time lead to more opportunity 1 on 1 for Harry. The playbook is still in use as evidenced by both Brisbane and Geelongs defensive set up.

As opposition clubs are forced to adapt to more forward options the playbook will have to change.

Thus more options in the forward line will lead to improved opportunities for H.

I know he hasn't played an actual AFL game yet, but remember their were some fans that went crazy because we traded 2 first draft picks to get higher up the draft order and select Jagga Smith at number 3

Carlton believes it landed the best player in the stacked 2024 draft class.........................this was the message out of that draft

Carlton

Receives: Picks 3, 63 and 68
Gives up: Matt Owies, picks 12, 14 and 73

West Coast

Receives: Liam Baker, Matt Owies, picks 12 and 73
Gives up: Picks 3, 63 and 68

Richmond

Receives: Pick 14
Gives up: Liam Baker
