I know he hasn't played an actual AFL game yet, but remember their were some fans that went crazy because we traded 2 first draft picks to get higher up the draft order and select Jagga Smith at number 3

Carlton believes it landed the best player in the stacked 2024 draft class.........................this was the message out of that draft

Carlton

Receives: Picks 3, 63 and 68
Gives up: Matt Owies, picks 12, 14 and 73

West Coast

Receives: Liam Baker, Matt Owies, picks 12 and 73
Gives up: Picks 3, 63 and 68

Richmond

Receives: Pick 14
Gives up: Liam Baker
Seemed like an absolute bargain at the time, and doubly so now.

Jagga certainly attracting some interest on the Richmond board. Panic stations already trying to justify their Number 1 pick.
Lalor was a risk given his soft tissue injury history before he was drafted. They wanted a Dusty Martin replacement and appears they overlooked Smith for this reason.

He played a few reserves games for them in 2024 and tore it up.

It's not like they weren't forewarned.
I remember thinking it was a bit strange when it became obvious they were taking Lalor over FOS or Jagga. They needed the future captain, 9/10 every week player rather than the X factor guy. Lalor will be an absolute superstar, but I think Richmond fans may be lamenting not getting the leader

It was different for them though because they were picking so many players.

to turn Cody Walker’s head towards them and use Pick 1 on Jagga Smith.

The top 6 were miles above the rest, as good as that draft will end up being. Lalor, Jagga, Langford, FOS, Ashcroft, Draper were the clear 6 in that crop. Surprised that their first top pick in a rebuild was an X factor guy over a leader. That’s what I’m saying

They went for a fair few higher ceiling lower floor types with their picks.

To be fair he does look like a Dusty replacement, I just preferred Jagga over everyone else that draft given his Daicos-like ability to get inside to outside and work his way into chains. That was exactly the player we needed.

Richmond got it right
They may have picked for their needs, but Jagga was best mid in draft and thankfully was what we desperately needed. Love Austin for trading us into top 3 to get him.

Has any pick 1 and 2 above him dominated any game , praccy or whatever, the way Jagga did last night? A hard no is the answer.

Let’s celebrate having this superstar on our list and remind every Pies fan that he will win the Charlie before Naicos! 👍🏼

Lalor vs Jagga - different players but both clubs will be winners and say they wouldn't swap the selections.

A bit like Jacob Weitering #1 vs Josh Schache #2 - in hindsight neither club would change their selection :p:p:p:p

Normally agree but Dean is ready. Mentally he will thrive on it and can play on 2nd or 3rd tall. Playing him in Seniors next to Weitering is the way forward IMO

I would play Weitering Derksen & Dean as our 3 talls supported by runners

And just for fun and mind games, I'd start Dean on Curnow. Tell him there is absolutely NO pressure on him whatsoever. Just run with him, stay next to him and spoil. It may just frustrate the living bejesus out of Curnow...and we all know leopards don't change their spots when they get frustrated

PS...Happy to rotate both Derksen and Dean on Charlie. Keep it simple...stay with him and harass the sh1t out of him. If he goes to FF, work out a plan where there is defensive cover

According to them, Smith will be a hack disposal stat padder.

Well there you go....

Jagga probably ruining the Rising Star market. Looked great! To my eyes, moved and hoovered up the ball like Zac Butters with a similar stature. May he stay fit, develop at his own pace and be somewhere near as good!
