Game Day AAMI Community Series - Carlton v Geelong Game Day

How did you guys rate Moir's game?
Moir, Hayward, Kemp, Byrne and to a lesser extent Ainsworth were all quite but our forward line functioned, we put pressure on Geelong's defence, kicked plenty of goals and we beat last year's runners up.

There will be weeks when some have massive games, big numbers, goals etc but having nearly all kick a goal or more, provide the ball carrier with constant strong targets to allow good ball movement and get the team to a win. That is a success.

Nearly impossible to have all 7 forwards having very active games. Next week it will be his chance, the week after it will be another. It's a modern fully functional forward line that doesn't need heros and massive games from individuals to beat good sides.

I thought he stepped up from last week. Much busier, good level of involvement, well taken goal. Nothing to suggest he shouldn't play round 0.

Really? I watched him closely and thought he really struggled to get into game. 2 kicks, 1 handball & zero tackles. Had second lowest player rating on ground

I think with players to come back Moir will struggle to hold spot at moment. We have options and form needs to be rewarded

Yep. Sad but true. Might be the most skilful bloke in the world but unless he can find a way to have more impact on games his spot is vulnerable. Good reports on Ison yesterday. He could easily go past Ashton quickly.

I think you are a little slow to notice this and about a year late in making this observation. Last year he was making a serious effort to do this on a consistent basis. Sometimes it did not come off but he appeared to be making the effort to take that first option at every opportunity. This was something I definitely noticed last year and I think I even made a post about it last year (and I don't post often). I noticed this last year because in the years before last year I thought he looked a good player but destroyed all his good work by regularly - as you said - killing our momentum by holding up play while he looked for a better option.

I'm sure we will continue to see some hesitation at times and, at other times, he will make the wrong decisions (that he did a couple of times last night) but he is a much better player when he reacts quickly without any hesitation.
The thing that frustrates me with our backline and Young is when a better kick like Gov, Saad, Zac has the ball and kicks horizontal or backwards kick 15/20 meters to Young and puts the onus on Young to find a pass through traffic.

Gov did it to him last night, we know Gov, Saad, Zac, Jacob even Wade, are better to make that decision and have more skill to execute. But Gov passes to Young then sort of jogs away. Young stands there thinking now I have to make this decision and pull it off because you just dished it off for no gain.

Ison was good in patches and is building nicely. Won't be long

If we are talking about players in form then Flynn Young is next in line. His pre season has been impressive and yesterday he was a class above.

His upside is great, but he just needs to work harder I reckon.

I don't know if I am reading too much into it, but was a bit surprised at the lack of reaction/support to Elijah kicking his first goal?

Got a few high fives from the players around him, but it was far from what we've seen when other players register important goals. No-one was running in from half back, for example...
Practice game, he does it in the real stuff and you'll see a response imo

He comes across as a bit ‘dreamy’ to me ( that’s not a knock on him just an obvservation)

Yeah I was a bit flat on his involvement. Hopefully they are trying things out and it changes but definitely had him as a big watch for this year.

I slightly less refined version of Pittonet. Pitto is better with the ball in hand. Reidy is a solid ruck who throws his body around at ground level and is good in contests, tackles hard, He's likable, but he should sit in the VFL waiting for a spot. That spot should come up regularly with Pitto's history and the need to rest him more than we have.

O'Keeffe needs to be the second ruck. Our forward line lacked that extra target to go long and deep too as well as someone who can take a big defender away from a medium forward like Moir. Our rucks don't do that. They can't play forward, don't impact well and opposition know this and they will exploit them when they are there. O'Keeffe requires a big defender and they have to mind him because he presents, reads it in the air, marks and kicks goals whereas Pittoner and Reidy don't and they will get played off and that is when McKay gets double teamed and that is when someone like Moir or Kemp gets a bigger opponent than they should.

He's a really good get but he has to be backup and we have to use that backup more often. Happy to have him on the list.
Agree, I don't think you can play both of them, better to have HoK or Harry pinch hitting as 2nd rucks.

Good to have Reid as a backup though, he'll get his chance at some stage this year can't see Pitto playing every game.

They may have picked for their needs, but Jagga was best mid in draft and thankfully was what we desperately needed. Love Austin for trading us into top 3 to get him.

Has any pick 1 and 2 above him dominated any game , praccy or whatever, the way Jagga did last night? A hard no is the answer.

Let’s celebrate having this superstar on our list and remind every Pies fan that he will win the Charlie before Naicos! 👍🏼
A Walker Vs West Coast?

Bodes well…

Yep fair enough, I hadn't seen stats. Clearly my vibe wasn't backed up in the actual numbers. That's not close to what he is capable of.

Totally agree, I'm a Moir fan.

But he wouldn't be in my 22/23 come next week.

Same. I am just hoping now we are at a point that we are picking players more on form or lack of it.

I want players, regardless of talent or history, having to play well to keep or earn their spots. That is what builds good sides

His involvement wasn't quite that limited but I agree with you that 7 disposals, 1 mark and a goal in 64% TOG isn't really going to cut it with the level of competition for spots in the forward 50. I know they will play different roles but I'd love to see Byrne given a go early - seems to make things happen, applies terrific pressure and knows where to position himself and how to find the goals.

Same but I think the recruitment of Haywood and Ainsworth has actually set him back a bit in the sense of being able to find his share of the ball inside 50. Gonna have to find ways to get more involved which probably means running harder more often.

Reckon so.
Yep. I think that O. Hollands and Chessar are the incumbent wingers next Thursday, particularly with Acres and Carroll unlikely to play. Healthy competition is healthy though. Round 1 last year L. Camporeale was one of the wingers from memory.

Maybe we should make him wait a week or two and get him really hungry.

Imagine if he had to wait 24 months.
