Tend to agree - for the reasons you metioned. However, if you don't perform then you are in strife.

Agree. Best way to look at it for mine is week 1 is easiest match of the year. Between AFL and VFL in level. For the aspiring perfoming well is the way to get a run the following week which is the 2nd easiest match for the year. Performing there gives you a chance for a senior spot at season start.

Essentially those aspiring players, left out for this week, are starting the season in the VFL. The ones who get a game still have a chance for an AFL start to the season.
