Something wrong with being scared of heights?

A 15m controllled fake rock climb in a team building session isnt terrifying, its a fun challenge in a safe environment more mental than pysical.

I dont like heights either but I went indoor rock clumbing with my kids growing up.

It is a mental challenge to overcome in a safe environment. If you want to.

As I posted. Im not sure what I think about that.

Suppose then its lucky we dont do the Kakoda trail as part of preseason.:drunk::$

I've done abseiling off 100m cliffs when I was younger, it was fun.

Terrified of heights now. Wouldn't even remotely consider it.

Nothing, considering he's unlikely to ever be 15m in the air during a game.

One day he might be able to ruck.

Was a tad cringy when he freaked out on the training camp with the rock climbing. Fear of heights and he tapped.

Not sure how we should feel about that.:huh:
Fear of heights is perfectly natural and I would argue hard wired in an evolutionary sense

Instead of sitting through 7 mins can someone tell me what am I supposed to be upset about here and at what time of the video it is?

I've time stamped it to around the 3 minute mark

Harry Edwards has a full mental breakdown when he attempts the rock climbing segment

Mini tries to calm him down but he only gets more frustrated

Eventually he strips all his clothes off and jumps into the river

It's like lying about your height on dating apps he just wanted to get a date with a team and then convince them of his great personality
Dude height is a bell curve on there, ive had to lower mine for more success to 6'6 from 6'8 you go from freak to stud

This is rubbish. That’s the thing about anxiety, it often doesn’t make sense - even to the person experiencing it. He might be a risk taker and have massive cajones in many other situations but his brain won’t let him chill when it comes to heights. Saying it isn’t terrifying and it’s just fun is your experience. He may readily do plenty of things you’d be uncomfortable with.

This type of attitude flies in the face of blokes supporting blokes and it being ok to show how you really feel regardless of the situation. He’s a reasonably courageous player and this is no knock on his character whatsoever

He only works part time as a apprenctice electrician. He was the highest paid player in the WAFL so was one of the few who had the cash on hand to just not work a 2nd job if he wanted too (probably taking 25% of salary cap on like 80k)

Pretty sure Tyrell Dewar works at the same place he does.

The WAFL salary cap for 2026 is $275k. None of the best players in the WAFL would even be close to earning the figure you've quoted.

The best players would earn roughly 10% of the cap and it's highly likely there's only one player of that ilk at any club. Even then, actual earnings would likely be a little lower.

Unless they change the rules to allow defenders to climb the goalposts to keep out set shots, I don’t see how it’s at all relevant.

Mental toughness.

Ability to work through difficult situations and overcome challenges and fears.

In elite sports that require elite athletes to reach the top, mental toughness is relevant. Not giving up and achieving difficult / uncomfortable tasks is relevant to elite sports.

Just went and did some research, go have a read. Its actually looked at and considered when drafting athletes. And the fear and anxiety can adversely affect performance. There is science behind it, which I wasnt origionlly aware of.

Anyway. Enough. Its a Murdock thread.

While you’re looking stuff up, look up phobias.

It’s not a difficult/uncomfortable task, it’s much more than that. They can be overcome, but it’s a lot harder than just gritting your teeth and working your way through it.

And if his phobia doesn’t actually have any effect on his job as a footballer (other than a one-off team building exercise in a pre season camp), why expend the time and effort to overcome it? I’d much rather he use that time and effort on his football.

He abseils to the ground and then says "I dont want to talk about it" in that video

Thats it. When was the breakdown?

I have a phobia that when I’m getting ready in the morning I’ll get mixed up between brushing my teeth and shaving, and will stick the razor in my mouth and **** up my teeth and gums. This didn’t stop me from winning Most Improved Player in my U/14 footy comp though. So clearly irrational phobias do not interfere with elite performance, this is a storm in a teacup.
