Autopsy 2026 Round 0 Carlton vs Sydney Don't ask me, I don’t know either

When your 70 and been watching the same crap round and round for over 30 years come back to me

Sure, I've been around the last 30 years too. But that doesn't explain the slight delusion pre-game about where we are at.

We've all seen bright pre-seasons, but you surely know not to get sucked in?

So we don't have the cattle, how do we get the cattle?

We need 4 like Heeney, Warner, Ashcroft, Ashcroft, Guilden, Daicos, Daicos, Blakey..etc.

You have to find them in the draft and wait...we are years away.

We have Smith (looks to have the skill set) and Walsh (occassionaly).

We get Cody next year (unknown).

I doubted we could win but a 12 goal qtr after dominating stunned me

This will be unpopular but for mine, both McKay and Cripps are showing signs of being pretty much irrevocably mentally cooked, with Weitering not far behind. All the years of failure have worn these guys down (and they know Voss is no good too).

At least we have HOF and Dean coming through, two potential bookends right there.

Acres completely anonymous out there, I'd be delisting him today
Come on. I knew someone would have to point score and point out he didn’t play. Sad fact about BF.

Do you seriously think I didn’t know he didn’t play?

I was talking about the collective ‘senior players’. Acres best is way behind him.

seriously..

Question

Are we closer to what we did in first half or second half?

Can we sustain first half and improve on it?
Soap I’m a bit dismissive of last night as venue was Sydney. The huge feral crowd had them running on air once the blood was in the water.

Been to lots of SCG games over the years and it’s like us being fed to the lions every time. They really roll up as they know we have to be 20% plus better than them to win.

Here’s the thing - we beat them in Covid zone in 2020 when zippo crowd, join the dots..

Put them on the G in a granny, we have brutally seen the difference it makes! We beat them there in a final too in 23.

I’m onto next week already

The next guy doesn't play the exact same ****ing duds week in, week out and demands some sort of minimum level of effort?
Sorry but that’s a really basic view - after one game sack the coach & all of our problems will go away…?

1/3 of the team had never played for CFC before.

10 players unavailable for various reasons.

Not by any means assuming to roll of a Voss-protector, blaming the coach for last night is like blaming the tip of the iceberg for The Titanic sinking.

We need another tall in the forward half. Too much on Harry's shoulders. He had a couple of bad moments but overall I felt he competed well. Derkson was recruited as a forward originally and has a nice set of hands. I know we recruited him to play back but it might be worth a shot.
I think the game is too fast to play 2 ruckman even with 5 now available on the bench.
I don’t mind the idea of trying Derkson as forward but I would prefer him down back and moving Lewis Young to a forward/ruck role.

Not unpopular at all. It’s obvious.

I'm never really negative but that was pathetic and why can't they fix the problem? I'm starting to get on a new coach bandwagon and yes i lost an avatar bet again on bloody Carlton.

Normally agree but to lose by 80 in half of football regardless of anything else is concerning.

When you have Saad (a player supposedly renowned for his speed) nearly run down by Brodie Grundy of all opponents, you know his time is fast reaching its end.

It was almost as embarrassing as Garlett being run down by old man Fletcher.

Maybe a Flynn Young or Byrne for Reidy. But worried about who gives Pitt a chop out.
Harry.

He's quite serviceable as a 2nd ruck, it actually would have been the move last night had Reidy not been in the team. Was doing 0 in the forward line, break the shackles get him up the ground and involved in the play, has worked quite well previously.

What was most humiliating was Sydney's third quarter outscored Carlton's entire four quarters.

And the boys put more of an effort in whenever the ball was out of play compared to in play, pushing and shoving. 🫣

We needed to play - get the ball to Jagga more. We looked good when Jagga, Walsh and co were handpassing forward and breaking lines. Many times we missed the easy short pass to break the lines and went long only to be rebounded against.

Notable examples include:

Lord missing an easy look to Jagga on the forward flank opposite to the cameras in the 4th; and
Williams (or Saad) missing an easy handball to Jagga in the forward 50 and kicking it to McKay out of bounds - the one where Jagga got a bit filthy.

We need to lose a couple of talls. Moir needs to step up. More run and line breaking off half back.

Yeah Saad has these 10 second bursts when he looks amazing, and then trudges around for the next 15 minutes. Clearly well below the required fitness level.

Disappointing to say the least.

We were outgunned and did feel a little like "just waiting for Sydney to get their shit together" type of game.

Some of the list continued to give their all, but sadly some familiar traits of senior personnel showed up real quick when the tide started to change.

Midfield structure collapsed and we failed to have someone at the back of the stoppage to shut down their forward movement.

Last thing I'll say is that this team has absolutely been unable to travel north and to Adelaide. It is a mental fragility that has been there for years. When the going gets tough on the road we cave like a wet cardboard box.

I hate how Vossy consistently says it's hard to win on the road away from home!!!!! It immediately provides a way out and it needs to be addressed. Until we can win on the road in a hostile setting, we won't be a great side!

Weitering is fine. I thought he looked switched on last night but just got swamped in the third quarter. Cripps has pride and is professional so I’ll back him in to fight back. McKay is a little more child like and could easily recoil and possibly want some more time off for mental health reasons.

Either way we need to move past the players who were the nucleus of the 2015 rebuild being the guys to lead us to success. They’ve had their time and failed. We need to look to the new leadership group. Problem is with Voss fighting for his job I can’t see it happening any time soon.

I'm relatively new to Big Footy, so forgive my naivety, but man I've got whiplash. Blokes tipping us on the thread, some by a margin, and now we're in agreement we should sack the coach and half the list? Christ.

Swans are really good. We were $3.90 outsiders for a reason. We played up to their level for more than a half and then they got us. With the changeover in our list expecting us to sustain that level was foolish.

I'm not saying it was a good performance, but I don't think it was horrible either. A lot of positives - Dean was good, Florent gave us a great option off half back, Smith/Walsh in the middle etc. With the new faster game style we were right to change our list profile.

We'll know a lot more after the Richmond game, though again you can't expect us to put 60 on them. We will improve as the season goes on and our list has a chance to gel.
Yep, this is the typical type of reaction you get here. A top side playing a below middle side and the world has come to an end. Last year people arguing we don’t need 2 big forwards, now we have to find another big forward. Let’s see how they go the next 3 games when they play teams they are capable of beating before burning the place down.

Still very disappointed with how that played out last night, but putting emotion aside we simply got blown off the park in 15 mins of play by a top 4 side on their home deck, a ground we have been utterly hopeless at for 30 years. That 15 minute patch was some of the best (Sydney) and worst (us) footy I’ve seen, but it isn’t itself the death knell for the season.

If we can regroup this week and beat Richmond, then we give ourselves a chance to build into the season. With 7 club debutants and a few best 23 players on the sidelines, we’re not going to be the finished product until later in the season.

In saying all that, if we lose to Richmond next week, then all bets are off. I’ve said all pre season this is the most important game of the season for this group. If we have any pride and grunt, we avenge what happened last year.
