Review R1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

Slayed a couple of demons there. Win against the Pies at the MCG.

Chance to bookend the season with MCG wins.

Third qtr outstanding when we switched to modern footy.

ROB not missed at all - those 2 have surpassed him and they did it at their absolute floor in terms of ability - they will only get better with experience.

Cook deserves a big block of games off the back of that.

Key thing for me is Milera.

Finally living up to the potential injuries could have robbed him of.

Agility, desire to break lines and big boy strength. Perfect HB.

Said during the game Footy is easy when you move the ball quick. We are a very good side when we do that.

Midfield dominance WTF??

Finally, beat this scum at the G.

Collingwood have lost 4 games in a row against non-Victorian teams at the MCG

R1 2026 vs Adelaide: lost by 14 points
PF 2025 vs Brisbane Lions: lost by 29 points
R22 2025 vs Brisbane Lions: lost by 27 points
R20 2025 vs Fremantle: lost by 1 point

Our best opening round win for years. Breaking a hoodoo like that should do wonders for this team and their confidence.

The first half was as ugly as a mule's arse, but we finally flicked a switch in the third and played it out well.

Milera brilliant, the best game of his career by a long way and seems primed for a huge year. McAndrew is our #1 ruck and R.O.B will struggle big time to get a game (not ideal for someone in the leadership group and who was given an extension).

Next week will be a huge test, but, unlike tonight, I'm confident we'll be up for it.

Good

We won.

Cumming. ANB. Worrell. Thilthorphe. McAndrew in his first hit out.

Cook best game. Arguably Milera too.

Rachele? Though some shakiness by foot.

Meh

Berry is a scrapper. Not good enough to be a starting midfielder.

Soligo obviously laboured, but stuck it out.

Fog. Very quiet. Needs to do more. But nailed his chances.

Keays, again pretty quiet, but kicked a crucial goal and involved in some crucial passages.

Ah Chee didn't do too much in his first game.

Pedlar about par from what we'd expect from that last forward picked role. If he'd kicked 3 instead of 1.2 it would have been a good game.

Bad

Very conservative game plan in first half and dogshit footskills.

Bond very shaky.

Laird is Laird.

Tex showing his age.

Turray didn't really get near it - but how much production can one expect from a 2nd Ruck with 32% game time?

2 first gamers
3 debutants for our club.
Missing our best play maker (and one of the few really quick players we have which we need against collingwood).
Still nice and inexperienced.
Away.
Got the win.
With a new ruckman.
With the new rules.
And with Nicks doing all the wrong things as coach :p

Just sad we didn't blow it out but can probably thank the umpires for that.

What a win, huge effort to keep pushing in that last quarter when the Pies got onto a run. Crows of old would have let that one slip.

McAndrew was fantastic, so good to have a ruck that gives us first look in the middle.
Milera best game for ages
ANB was so good in the first half, great performance.
Worrell very good
Thought Tex stood up after a rusty start. Took some very important marks.

Let's hope Nicks bins whatever that was in the first half. Was awful with the little chipping around crap. Let the boys use their speed and get it into the big forwards quickly.

Mature win. There were moments that we've all seen before where we'd normally drop our bundle but they stood up. And we didn't just creep over the line, we kept a safe buffer against a team who won flags off the back of coming from 5 goals down.
