Every time I see Josh Treacy I think Will Brodie grew and got better
Then I remember he got traded to Port Adelaide

Sounds like Dimma told Ainsworth that he was unlikely to play as a small forward ahead Lombard or Rogers and there really isn't another spot on the field for him. So as the article suggests, the writing was on the wall and a lot of it had to do with Ainsworth's output. 23 goals in 24 games last year just isn't enough output if we're going to contend for a flag. Lombard is currently averaging 2 goals a game and I think Dimma would be happy if he keeps that up to finish the season with around 40 goals for the season. For context, the most goals Ainsworth ever kicked in a season was 25 and that was in 2022.

That's actually a frightening stat how did we not know that If that guy was really only good for one goal a game (and god knows how many points) then he was a bust a long time ago unfortunately

Tbf for 8/9 seasons he played here no-one kicked goals. He only once played in a good team. I think he has been used wrong almost his entire career as well.
He started off playing deep forward and was a handful to match up on, got moved to a high half forward role and stagnated. Should be playing deep.

Lets hold of crowning Leo as the answer till he has played more than 2 games that weren't thrashing hey? Last year you claimed Jed was on target to kick 40 goals after a couple of games.

Especially when Roger’s and Lombard are half the price

He was a bit like Sam Day in that sense. The required output in terms of goals kicked was just never there and they both hovered around a goal per game in their best years. Ainsworth is 28yo now so I think the club knew exactly where his ceiling was and that he was unlikely to get any better than he is right now considering he's currently in his prime physically and has played over 150 games. On the other hand, Lombard and Rogers have plenty of room for growth being 19 and 21yo.

That's true. Paying less for more output.

I'm not necessarily suggesting Leo is the answer, more that Ainsworth wasn't the answer and it was time to try something else now that we're likely to be contending for a flag very soon.

I was a big Ainsworth fan simply based on how hard the guy worked
At the end of the day though he let himself down by not kicking enough goals
I would wish him well if he wasnt playing for Carlton

Surely everyone knew exactly what Ainsworth was by his 9th season.

A short guy who had a decent leap but never really used it in games, virtually never took a contested mark.

Ran hard forward and was a good link up guy from the midfield to the forward line.

Made ok decisions with ball in hand in the front half but often held it up for too long after marking ~80m out from goal and was not an accurate or reliable kick and could only really kick 45m. Decent goal assist/score assister.

A below average shot for goal.

Didn't tackle much.

I think he was an ok player, but didn't contribute to winning much - pretty easily replaceable IMO.

Ainsworth's place in our club history is cemented as he'll always be a life member and a member of our inaugural finals team. No one can ever take those achievements away from him and I'm sure we'll have him back for club functions once his Carlton career comes to an end. Like Lukosius, it sounds like Ainsworth didn't really want to leave but he could see the writing on the wall and I guess that's just footy sometimes. Maybe one day we'll see an Ainsworth Jr lining up for us and Ben's legacy can continue in the red and gold.

In other Suns life member news, does anyone else find it a little weird to see Day in the Southport jumper? I'm not 100% sure why, but it just looks odd to me. Going to take some adjusting, I think.

Looks like Goobs has got himself AFL ready fitness wise

He's obviously told the fitness guys he's a better player with an extra 10kg
They probably agreed but were thinking he meant lean muscle mass
That shot of him and Sam looks like a before and after Ozempic shot

I missed this post just before Opening Round, but how good is it to see another life member in Rischitelli back inside the four walls 7 years after his retirement and getting amongst the playing group by presenting jumpers? I think he still feels a strong connection to the club and I remember him mentioning in an interview last year that it was special to see former teammates like Witts and Swallow finally getting to play finals after so many years of grinding and that was proud to play a part in that. Probably helps that Rischa's son is now a member of our academy program. Gives him a great reason to get more involved with the club over next few years.
