Does anyone rate One Battle After Another?
Brilliant acting but horrendous storyline and just meh. Overrated
I love Leo and PTA but I agree, great acting and I think Sean Penn was brilliant too. But it is extremely overrated.

Am I the only one who thought the Project Hail Mary trailer looks terrible? It 100% put me off the movie
It achieves all the worst things a trailer can do:
  • makes the film look worse than it probably is
  • spoils a major plot reveal that was otherwise not in the general synopsis/premise
I only have myself to blame for breaking my own rule of not watching them :/

There's been lots of gushing about it on this thread, yeah. Myself included.

The initial reaction was almost uniformly positive, but with that always comes a negative reaction later on as a response to the hype. Winning best picture will only exacerbate that.

Personally warms my heart seeing PTA holding 3 little gold statues - very well deserved

People acting like this is the first time a director has won for a lesser film after being snubbed for years when he was at his peak.

Yeah OBAA is nowhere near PTAs best film, but Departed wasn't in Scorcese's top 5 either.

OBAA is a still a really well made and enjoyable film and I cant really see any outrage in it beating the other nominations this year.

Its better that films like OBAA, Marty Supreme and Sinners are in contention than the old days where a boring ass period piece like kings speech, a white saviour western like dances with wolves or a schmaltzy feel good movie like Forrest Gump (which i do admit I have a soft spot for) beat modern day classics like Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction and Social Network.

Damn my local theatre Astor is showing a double feature of Sirat and Climax on tomorrow at same time as Doggies vs Crows, really tough to decide whether to go to the movies or stay home and watch the footy.
Ive seen Climax before but on my phone during a flight so would love to see it at the cinemas.

DP is Greg Fraiser. Who's one of the best in the business. But the 1st trailer I thought the same re: PHM.

The final trailer grabbed my interest

Lots of cool shots and more look into the space. Final trailer does give away too much though.

I’m a longtime fan of Greig Fraser, however I don’t care for his big budget blockbuster work, wish he’d get back to the small-mid budget films he did up until a decade ago. Wasting his talent a bit on stuff like Dune, the Batman, Rogue One, the Creator, etc.

The trailer was shown while I was waiting for Wuthering Heights to start. As soon as it ended someone yelled “looks SHIT” and, as much as I don’t like people calling out in the cinema, couldn’t help but agree.

Yes, very highly. Films like this don’t contend for Oscars very often, glad they didn’t pass up the rare opportunity. Especially given the last four winners (plus Sinners) were all duds to me.

I’m not sure if we’re being a touch hyperbolic to make a point but SURELY we’re not actually calling Sinners a “dud” fair enough if you didn’t love it or connect with it or whatever but it’s far from a bad film.

I dunno about it being a lesser PTA. Like yeah, time allows us a clearer perspective than being of the moment (Magnolia was seen as a good but pretentious sophomoric film, showcasing his talent again but also his need for an editor, with 1999 an all time great year for cinema, now I’d say 1999 is seen as being just another year, but Magnolia and the also then-coolly received Eyes Wide Shut being two of the major highlights).

One Battle After Another is incredibly topical, and so probably even doubly so we’ll have to see how it ages. But I will say living in these times and seeing that movie, my initial reaction would be to have it up with There Will be Blood.

I mean, I don’t think Everything Everywhere All At Once or Anora or Sinners are the types of movies that often contend for Oscars either, whether one’s a fan of them or not (and even if not a fan, come on, they’re not CODA).

Yeah that comment just came down to my personal preference (and was an attempt at seeing other side of argument). I probably shouldnt have used such OTT language haha.

Can see why you and many others have it up there as his best but there were parts that just didnt land as well for me as some of his other movies.

I need to rewatch magnolia as havent seen it in years, same with punch drunk love but theyre the movies that introduced me to him so have always ranked them highly.
Parking them aside though my faves are TWBB, phantom thread and the master.

Glad you guys enjoyed some of those films more than me, I respect that. It’s just a me thing, and how I personally regard those five qualitatively as substandard Best Picture options. I don’t expect you to agree. There’s no objective right or wrong answer with these things.

His smaller movies are great too, but I disagree with his talent being wasted on those blockbusters!

Id do tiers for PTA and would go

Top Tier
OBAA
Boogie Nights
Magnolia
TWBB

Mid Tier
The Master
Phantom Thread

Bottom Tier
Inherent Vice
Punch Drunk Love (havent seen Licorice Pizza)

But i would note that his bottom tier is stil excellent and its only really personal enjoyment and connection with them that impacts my tiering.

I broadly agree about the subjectivity of all these things, except CODA below all. Say what you will of any other movie that won Best Picture, at least they were movies.
