Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Jack Dalton

We haven't had an accumulator type on our list for a while. Dalton was winning it a lot, constantly tackling and using his tank to provide an extra option.

His kicking is probably the weak point, ranging from good kicks to floaters. Training reports have indicated he's been staying behind to work on it and is leaving no stone unturned.

He was very impressive. Get him attuned to this level and watch him grow. Fun times.

As his biggest fan (check my posts!) I'm glad to see he showed people why I'm invested in this kid.

Once he got used more on ball he grew quickly onto the game

I'd love to know how much ground he covered. He was staying on for 20 minute stretches which is insane for a first year player.

He will debut this year and he will be an absolute star.

Think it’s kicking is fine. He’s capable of some beautiful kicking, but can at times get caught trying to weight kicks which end up being a bit hospital like.

Has pace, a freakish endurance base and accumulation. Had a good mix of inside/outside whilst his defensive game was also strong. Lots of good signs.

On a scale of Worpel to Mitchell where is his kicking at?
Below both of them atm.

He’s technique can be worked on - When he punches through the kick for short kicks he’s fine.

Some of it is due to fatigue and some of it is because he’s too front on with his kicking.

He needs to kick a little more side on - he doesn’t need to be as side on as Sicily or Mass - that’s where they generate their power - but he struggles with distance and loops/ floats the ball (Tom Mitchell like) because he hasn’t developed the side technique yet.

When he does - his kicking will be sharper and he’ll get the extra 5 or so meters and the “loop” kicks will disappear.

A couple of pre-seasons learning from Mass and Amon and he’ll be fine.

The rest of his game is impressive. Great first up game.

did we watch the same game? His kicking was more then fine, he had one awful one at the end of the game when legs were tired but he went at 73%? He hit a beautiful inside kick as well. Not saying his kicking is out of this world but seems like a massive over reaction for mine.

Didn’t watch the entire game but he nailed a couple of aggressive kicks and short passes …… his technique looks ok
Could be a similar issue that Worps has. A decent enough technique but rushes them when under pressure?

Regardless that's a hell of a first game. I am pretty big on this young fella, I like the cut of his jib. Sneaky chance to play a couple games this year if we have some spots open up.

A grunt hard working midfielder. Probably the hardest working player out there yesterday. Has a great appetite for the contest and a tenacious character that never gives up or gives in. A few rough edges that need to be smoothed out and u know he will be working on them. Keep an eye out for him in the future

Reminds me of a young Tom Scully.

Amazing endurance base, uber professional, smaller, ball accumulator, and you'd prefer him hitting shorter kicks rather than longer kicks.

We got 'post-career' Tom Scully, but for a while there at GWS he was quite a damaging player.

Scully had a good year or two at the hawks before dropping right off.
Was it an ankle injury that he had to come back from before we picked him up?

Good is pushing it, he was "okay" at the Hawks and that's about it. Used to low key annoy me how easily opposition players used to brush him off, he had minimal physical presence.

That's the problem with being an elite runner in AFL, you have to sacrifice a fair bit of muscle mass to get that fit.

I reckon Dalts has a bit more mongrel in him than Scully did, he seems to enjoy mixing it with the bigger boys in the middle.

Led our score involvements one year from memory

Amazing workrate and just seems to be able to get to contest after contest. He just needs a preseason or two practicing his field kicking under duress and we have another legit midfielder.

I assume he slid due to his height and the modern trend of selecting taller mids.
