Here's the thing: from everybody's point of view, except for those who do the drafting, in order to actually do their job well, once a kid gets in the club, it shouldn't matter where they were drafted. Unless you are properly rebuilding, players need to earn their spots through performance. Don't get hung up on sunk cost: all draft picks are worthless once you use them to pick a player.

Our two captains were rookie picks and another of our best four players was a mid-season draft pick.

So now that Tobie is at the club, he needs to earn it like everyone else. His record at lower levels would indicate he will, and it will endure. Eighteen months from being drafted, where he was drafted (except for those tasked at the club with drafting) is kind of irrelevant.
He’s another late birthday 26/10, he’s 19.

I watched him play at u/18 level I’m glad we drafted him top 10 and I’m backing him to prove me right.

Talk about his skills and decision making are nonsense imo, we have guys playing regular senior football who make him look like Diacos. Kid seemed to do a hell of a lot right under pressure when it mattered for vic country.

We need enough players currently on the list to turn into guns so we can win a premiership. He's no more necessary to be a gun for our success than any other player currently at the club.

Coaches shouldn't be coaching with original draft pick status in mind. He was drafted, now to get him to speed.
Certainly we need to be getting high-end talent from every available avenue e.g Max Hall

Being a top 10 pick is always going to come with more expectations and scrutiny though.

Now can’t be 100% with this but heard Wilson doesn’t get along well with Ross and supposedly will pursue his north links unless he receives a better offer else where. Could be garbage but isn’t nothing

The exodus continues.

A lot of the picks have been good and I do have faith in Travaglia becoming a good player, but at pick #8 we need elite talent not just GOP's. Every other club would have known Windy's back injury was minor and a ruse, he went later because of his ball use being unreliable and clubs didnt want to risk an early pick.

To suggest we should be satisfied with Travaglia regardless of his pick position is 'old Stkilda thinking'. Nas was taken at pick #11, he was physically slight and possibly not ready for senior footy but he played round 1 because of his elite skill sets. Travaglia has the same physical hurdles, but doesnt have any where near a top 10 skill set. He can run - but so could Fiora, he can find the footy - but so could Dunstan.

The fact that he butchers so many disposals, whether it be decision making or missing his kicks, IMO should have been a complete no go zone in the first round.

Early first round picks in todays game are like gold and if clubs want to be sucessful they need to make the absolute best out of them. Have a look at how many first round picks Essendon, WCE and North have had, that hasnt garunateed them sucess because they stuffed so many of them. Richmond will be the complete opposite IMO, they have nailed most their picks and if it wasnt for a run of injuries they would be a lot more advanced.

Just look at the Rising Star nominees from 2024 - how many of them would you have Travaglia in front of?
Jamie Shanahan
Luke Trainor
Cooper Lord
Murphy Reid
Archie Roberts
Xavier Lindsay
Isaac Kako
Levi Ashcroft
Harvey Langford
Sam Lalor
Hugh Boxshall
Joe Fonti
Angus Clarke
Matt Carroll
Jagga Smith
Would have been nice if he got it done in late September 1997.

what a reactionary joke this is.

I have zero confidence in those making the rules around the draft. the DVI changes already solved a lot of issues last year when you look at the number of unmatched bids from the 20s-40s (Carmichael, Sweid, Prindable, Evans, Banfield)

to fix the top end, the idea of only being able to match bids with a maximum of two picks is reasonable. but we're near the end of March and it's still not set in concrete

floating this new idea makes me think that idea is not going ahead. keeps the Blues, Port and the northern clubs happy. meaning you'll still be able to scramble together some relative junk for a top end pick, while not putting the bottom clubs' noses too far out of joint like last year

either way, how can teams reliably trade future picks when they have no idea what the system will look like the following year?

I hope it was just one of those "No idea is a bad idea" type of brainstorming sessions because that's ****ing ridiculous

Sums up the AFL perfectly. “Let’s fix a compromise by adding another compromise”.

Is there anyway we can scam the system to get first access to this bloke? He has been training with us and is the grandson of Allan Davis who played in our flag. Dang--if only there was a grandfather-grandson rule.

What could we get in terms of compo if Wilson sooked it off to some other shit stain of a Club? Not up on the rules. He’d be un-contracted though…

EDIT just looked it up, we match their deal and force a trade

He's not a free agent. So same situation as if Nas left last season. They have to trade for him.

It’s a top 10 pick and then it’s potentially abit more based on where that falls.

I think North will throw everything at him. It will be close.

I’m not trading him full stop, I rate Wilson very highly.

The club will do as they please but Finn O’Sullivan and something would be my starting ask. I really have zero interest in most of their list for various reasons. They have a handful of players they either wouldn’t trade or you wouldn’t want.

Let’s hope we sign him up.

Would hate to trade Wilson but could he help us prise nate caddy from the bombers. Need to be in his ear after the words Scott had about him in the media over the weekend. Imagine you get max fit and double team him with caddy, wowee.

Still think we are short a gun mid ATM.
Still, I wouldn't want to lose Wilson, he is unique.

Ruptured ACL for Tom Steinfort (the first-round contender that Geelong stole from our NGA a couple years ago)
