Gray played 17 minutes against the Dees attending 4 CBA and 12 ruck contests & 39 minutes against Carlton which is quite low TOG so it's a bit harsh to judge his lack of impact as a ruck.

Like you said maybe the plan is to go with Balta and Lefau in the ruck and swing Gray back, maybe the plan is to rotate all 3 through the position. No doubt it's something that was discussed in depth at match committee before they settled on the plan.

All we can do is try something and see how it pans out.

I played country football, in those days if the match committee did too much in-depth discussion on team selection night, they would end up too drunk to drive home. The Tigers team selections have a familiar feel for some reason.

Ross is a far better player without hopper . He has the potential to be our best midfielder by some distance.

He's a C-grade midfielder and somehow still on track to be our second-best midfielder going into 2027 (despite the 'rebuild' starting early 2023). A real indictment.

Crazy to think Ross has been our best recruit through the draft from 2018 - 2023 All our other draftees are gone from the club except Ryan , Brown , Gibcus

He has 18 hit outs in 10 games for Essendon and 2 for us in 9 games.

Gray only played 19 games of VFL vs OHBs 26 games and only one of them has played as a ruck in all their VFL games.

Gray also had a pcl injury last year that was reinjured as he was about to come back and basically keeping him out for 4 months.

The excuses for this selection are mind boggling. Why are there so many excuses about protecting OHB but same posters seem happy for Gray (who IMO actually has a long term future with the club) to bear the physical punishment of playing ruck in shit conditions against much bigger competition.

What if it was Gibcus we decided to put in the Ruck? Or maybe we should ask Lalor to play as KPF again even if we had other fit KPF.

I can understand that sometimes there is no choice for these kinds of decisions, but OHB is fit, available and is an actual ruck. This screams of no faith in OHB and slow moving list management disaster that’s been 2-3 years in the making. If they went with Balta/Lefau ruck combo I’d be far less incensed, they have physically mature bodies to at least hold up better and protect younger players.

I don't mind Gray. He isn't suited to first ruck. He gets the nod again ahead of Ryan, OHB and even Fawcett.

OHB moved ok in the VFL. He lost hit outs but we smashed them. Why not select him
