Ginbey fits this weird paradox of being one of the most overrated and underrated players in the AFL.

Talking to Eagles supporters you would swear he's the next coming of Jakovich.

Talk to the average punter and he's a potato with a nice mullet.

The answer is somewhere in between. He's a very good player and still learning his craft but he's still a ways off being an elite defender. And that's not a bad thing, that's just the reality of being a 21 year old key position player.

With Ginbey he has massive strengths - speed, size, strength etc
With some horrific weaknesses - poor disposal, poor ball winning ability, lack of composure.

So people see what they want, if they like him they point out the strengths, if they don't they point out the weaknesses. Both are valid and very obvious.

What the **** did I just read?

Old mate is REALLY upset that Ginbey dominated that game. 19 1%ers, 16 spoils, didn’t lose any of his 5 contested 1v1’s, 4 coaches votes. Ignorance

Still not as good as Zane Duursma though :(

Clearly JHF is better than Harley Reid because he’s… a better bloke? Despite abandoning this guys club and setting their rebuild back another year.

And clearly the game was won because checks notes…. It was a bit warm?

Sounds very similar to early Rance. I remember him being a whipping boy on the Tiges board until it all started click.

If he's half as good, you'd be pretty rapt with that.

Ginbey isn't as bad as early Rance ball in hand, but he isn't great and it's a clear weakness that needs to be improved for him to become elite.

Ginbey is having to play tall due to our lack of capable KPD.Really too short to be playing KPD.
He is also been playing in the worst side in the last couple of years with the ball always in the backline.
I think we will see the best of him as the Eagles improve.

Rance was the most overrated player I've ever seen. Very good, but the hype around him some kind of paradigm shifting player was out of control.

Ginbey started as a mid and is now effectively playing as our #1 key defender. In his first season he had 100 tackles in 17 games which put him top 20 in the comp on average which is not what you'd expect for a first year player, but he is a manchild. Unfortunately for his development he's gone from being chucked in the deep end as a mid in a team that sucks to going back into defence in the season where Tom Barrass left and Jeremy McGovern had to retire. The fact he has played on the likes of Jeremy Cameron and Ben King is ridiculous. I hope as our list gets better he can settle into a Brad Sheppard type role because I think he has a high ceiling, just not as a mid or a full back. Bit like Hawthorn really, much more settled without relying on James Sicily to step up and be the #1 key defender which isn't his go.

I would have liked to see Ginbey work as a mid as he has the physical attributes of a modern mid but I don't think that's on the cards.

As I've said previously in this thread I reckon with more experience and genuine KPDs around him he could get to Vlaustin levels. Similar attributes, both failed midfielders, both read the ball well. Ginbey just has to improve his disposals and decision making which comes with time.

I'd worry about his ball use as a mid.

I think high athleticism +low skill/IQ players being played as a stopper would be the best use of his skillset. Would you rather pencil in an elite fullback for the next 10 years, or a run of the mill average defensive mid?

Yeah his mid days are done now. His ceiling IMO is average mid, good key defender and very good medium defender/third tall.

I imagine at least some of it is height related. He's playing kpd while not being the typical kpd height. When you're playing tall without being tall you don't tend to get the credit until you're proved without a doubt you can do it - Charlie Curnow for example is only a centimetre taller but has won two colemans, so no one questions if he can play tall. Sicily is actually shorter than Ginbey but has done enough that no one questions if he can be a KPP. Ginbey hasn't done enough yet to prove to doubters that he can do it reliably, and that's fine. He's done enough to convince me, and to convince the coaches. I think by the end of the season it'll be undeniable to just about everyone.

I think Ginbey could have a similar career to Josh Gibson, although I think Gibbo was more assured with ball in hand. Ginbey bigger and more athletic.

I'm not sure if the modern game would appreciate a spoil first, mark second 3rd tall like they did 10 years ago, (especially with how difficult it is for teams to defend forward 50 stoppages and repeat inside 50s) but I can see him being very good in that role.

Curnow might be short on the scale for a KPP but his wingspan would be off the charts. He's got a short neck/torso and really long limbs.

You were rolling out teams older than 3/4 of the comp LAST YEAR

you’re just dribbling shit

If Richmond hasn’t gone past WC and North they are level pegging at WORST
Lol at this Freo pointdexter running away with his tail between his legs after dribbling shit

Training at WCE, thanks Eagles!

Thought for a moment that we'd picked up a few more ex tiggers .............. then whew, worked out we are just helping out anyone that plays the purps!
We'll do our best. We still owe you for taking the Pies out in 2018 for us. Forever in your debt, or at least until we can beat the Dockers in a GF.

This is the biggest concern for Richmond imo. Very slim pickings all the way from players aged 22 to the 30 year mark. So far outside of this bracket the only kids to really cement themselves are Campbell and Lalor. If the last couple of drafts don’t pay out big time (2021 draft says hi) they’re in for a world of hurt for a long stretch.

The eagles are in the exact same boat are they not?

Ginbey, Hough and Reid are the only youngsters to have cemented themselves in another team with a 22-30yo slim picking list.

And Sam Banks would have had to have cemented himself.
