I think Buller stuffed up a few times, but often when they're flying against each other it's intentional - defence usually has the numerical advantage and the more in the pack the less intercept marks and the more balls come to ground. If you're a glutten for punishment, rewatch how Brisbane beat is in the 3rd quarter of the prelim - bombs to packs with multiple forwards and the ball comes to ground - they weren't trying to separate.
Agree! Our forwards did not have a good prelim. But the strategy of bombing it was terrible. Our mids had a shocker too. We got smashed around the contests too.

In that particular game, it would've been effective to have him as an option going forward.

But over the course of the year, when we were looking like we'd finish minor premiers, DC playing interceptor was a key for us, a huge reason why he won the B&F.

No. I meant Brisbane were bombing it to packs deep forward. It stopped our interceptors doing their thing.

Not really.

Darren Jolly and Cam Wood never worked (basically because Cam Wood never worked)

We had Grundy and Witts in the same side but they could never really make it work.

Sure, two ruckmen sounds better than one when everything else is equal …

… but everything else is not equal. When you have two ruckmen on the teamsheet of 23, what are you giving up?

Definitely agree the attempts to force too many rucks in the past has not been great (remember 2016, we played Grundy/Witts/Cox vs Melb and got destroyed), but more talking the Fly era with Cameron and Cox.

The game has changed. Having 5 on the bench and no sub means you can play a 2nd ruckman around 60% of the game. Gives us the chance to move Cameron around the ground. Will be crucial next week against the Lions given Moore is likely to miss.

I think part of the reason it hasn't worked in the past is that none of them were great marking ruckman so weren't really useful as additional talls around the ground. Both Cameron and Steene seem to be great contested marks so will be a lot more useful for us considering our lack of KPP more generally.

True to some extent. But who knows what might have happened if we had selected him late last season rather than bringing Cox back in.

Brisbane weren’t afraid to pick Gallop.
The ruck rule change this year works in Oscar's favour. I think he would have just been rag dolled last year.

I think the rule change and also the 5 man bench gives him an opportunity to be a specialist centre ruckman who pushes forward.

Lots to play out for Oscar, GWS are prob one of the weakest ruck combos. He won’t have it as easy against a lot of other rucks.

He played a VFL game against Darcy Fort last year - who would have been a prelim opponent. Fort monstered him, just pushing him out of the way and had a heap of hitouts, 28 possessions and 12 clearances.

3) The Pies have found a new weapon

Collingwood found something on Friday night it wasn't certain it had when it arrived at Marvel Stadium. Oscar Steene had to wait more than three years for his first chance at AFL level, but the ruckman showed there will be much more to come after a brilliant debut against Greater Western Sydney. Darcy Cameron had struggled to impact at centre bounce across the first fortnight, under the new ruck rules. But with Steene working in tandem, Collingwood looked more dangerous in the middle. Cameron has established himself as one of the best ruckmen in the AFL across the past few years, but the West Australian has rarely missed and is damaging behind the ball. In Steene, Craig McRae now has another option. That was the key lesson on Friday night.

They clearly are great for Oscar, but overall, they alter which teams Collingwood will beat in the position - and I think it'll be less teams, as Darcy won his position very comfortably most weeks under the old rules. Time will tell though - the real test will be whether or not we win the role when we're up against blokes who can jump - we used to win those - who knows at this stage. Hopefully Oscar can also beat the other leapers in ruck contests, but it's a guess.

I wonder if Gold Coast shift to Andrew in the ruck? He might be incredible as a high leaping ruckman who gets to free wheel around the ground rather than playing defensive structure. I think teams who have leapers who are also really good in general play like him and Luke Jackson will be the real winners of the rule change.
I like you're left field thinking

Pies should look to recruit a high jumper from track and field or long jumper

Can you explain the change and how it helps Oscar pls
He is an athletic footballer who likes to run and jump. The new rules were you can't wrestle and cross the line, with the ball up, gives him that opportunity to jump for the ball, using his leap and athletic traits to reach the ball at the highest point.

if anyone remembers the mr sheen jingle (cleaning product), here is one for mr steene

Oh Oscar Steene! Oh Oscar Steene!
The biggest leap that we have ever seen!
Now don’t you worry Pies, grab the ball and take the skies,
In just a tick he’ll have the ruck contests… clean!
Oh Oscar Steene! Oh Oscar Steene!
You and the Daicos make a quite fantastic team!
First he'll tap it down the throat, then he'll guard the Magpie moat,
And a goal across the sticks will make us… gleam!

Rucks used to be able to cross the centre line as soon as the ball was thrown up. Big guys did so and it made it a battle of strength without any jumping. Under new rules, you can't do that anymore to take away someone's leap like you could - it's shifted the advantage from size and strnegth to jump and reach.

Why was everyone so mean to me when I suggested we play Steene?. Turned out to be an astute decision by the Manic one, once again. So boring

It's because you're a campaigner.
