The Richmond free kick reaming coincided perfectly with S Hocking arriving at AFL House and taking charge of the umpires, MRO, rules and interpretations for the 2018 season. It is from then on we started seeing Richmond record big outlier returns in free kick differential stats.

Richmond + or - from AFL Median free kick differential average per game stats from when we started making finals:

2009: -0.7
2010: -1.9
2011: -1.8
2012: +1.1
2013: +0.5
2014: +0.1
2015: +3.4
2016: -0.1
2017: -2.2

Hocking arrives....

2018: -5.0
2019: -1.0(we looked gone with early injuries, so Hocking erred in allowing almost fair umpiring, but vowed never again)
2020: -3.6(would be -4.5 in full game time)
2021: -3.8
2022: -3.7
2023: -2.3
2024: -3.7
2025: -1.4
2026: +3.6

Before Hocking was put in charge of the umpires, for 9 years Richmond's range was -2.2 below AFL median to +3.4 above AFL median for free kick average per game differential. There were 4 positive results totalling +5.1 and 5 negative results totalling -6.7. On average we were just below AFL median, but not by enough to worry about.

Post Hocking all the way up to 2025 we see the range is -1.0 below AFL median to -5.0 below AFL median. There are zero positive results, and 9 negative results totalling -23.5 below AFL median.

So we can see some pretty serious work was going into making sure the umps reamed us until we got the wooden spoon, now hopefully it is starting to normalise a bit. But it is only early days this year.

I have little doubt the officiating went all time bad for Richmond from 2018 because Hocking had a set against them and consciously or otherwise his stance against Richmond has been transferred to the umpiring fraternity, who were under his command.

Between 2016 and 2025, a 10 year span, Richmond "achieved" a negative free kick differential in every season. There has to be an equal chance of a random AFL club getting a positive or negative result in any given season. So a team getting 10 negative results in those 10 seasons is a 1023 to 1 shot. Worse that a thousand to one chance of occurring.

'ken cheats.

Every team gets a competitive fixture in the Gather Round, except Geelong.

Hawks after having to endure an 18 day break before playing Geelong, then face the Bulldogs.

Geelong fixture man worked this out beautifully.
