VAFA General Discussion

I think that’s a stretch. Their admin costs are now split between much fewer clubs. Clubs fees always covered umpires as well so im not sure how that’ll “cut costs”.

I don’t think they’d be paying any costs on finals grounds either, there usually a deal cut with canteen earnings etc.
Don't be surprised

FWIW what are the thoughts on the reduced reserves qtr lengths? It is quite a sizable reduction (half a qtr) when compared to seniors qtrs that can now average 45 mins more per match.

No they don't, it's subs mate not match payments. All it covers is a blokes fee to be able to play, which helps clubs...which helps the VAFA.

What a stupid thing to fire up about but you do you
I agree it's not a big deal and SHOULD be allowed in every competition ....... but ...... technically, AM is correct. Any form of financial inducement is not allowed in the VAFA including payments of subs and/or merchandise, players kit, etc.

In semi-professional clubs anything like that must be allocated to the TPP as the AFL Advisory board has recently released a statement to all competitions on how it must comply so that it can give equity across the competitions.

Again, I actually think this is a step too far and could be a blocker to maximizing player participation across ALL leagues and will be further discussed at future meetings with AFL Vic I would imagine. Lets focus on the big stuff, not the small instances that support more players playing.

Agree with most of that CC.

I’m not sure which is missed most, the Hoes leaving the VAFA or you leaving this board. Love your savvy, interesting posts. Don’t be a stranger. The board is better with your presence.

Speaking of inducements, did anyone read the article in The Age today regarding how clubs are getting around the salary cap??

Wasn't it on Code ?
Big story in the Age.

A lot of “I know this but I won’t dob in”.

Most of the penalties have come from self reporting or “timing issues”.

I believe VAFA football will be destroyed if this isn’t rectified or if higher salary caps are introduced.

Allowing a Heidelberg to pay $200k, would see most competing clubs fold and Heidelbergs junior club with have 10 x Under 15 teams so the will qualify these players as 1 pointers.

Is the VAFA clean, most likely not.

Max please.

Salary caps have been getting 'rorted' as long as 'no payments in ammo's' has across all states of local football for as long as I can recall ...... and as you know, I'm long in the tooth.

Salary caps 20 years ago were over $200k and the VAFA survived like it always did - supporting players via their extensive networks.

The demise of some clubs/Divisons of the VAFA are due (in part) to HQ looking at a way it can be sustainable and no longer wanting to be the largest.... at all costs.

With this in mind, whatever other competitions are paying will not hinder the top end of town and the football elite in the foreseeable future.

100% agree with what happened in past.

Now if your president and committee had to raise $200k in player payments, the stress it will cause (I believe) would be insurmountable. Have one year of fund raising and a club could go to the wall.

I have said this before.

There will be a Premier Division of local football, where the salary cap will be $300k to $400k.

A little like the VFA in the 60’s and 70’s where players chose to not pursue VFL as there was more money elsewhere. The current VFL will be decimated, leaving only players who think they will be drafted staying.

The major VAFA clubs will find away to get the money, then it will be on.

I also believe that VAFA will be a 5 division comp very soon.

But what would I know.

5 grades will be spot on

Agree fundraising would be stressful for all semi-professional clubs - absolutely.

Agree some clubs would already be spending $300k - $400k and I think that is ludicrous personally, but pub talk suggests it is happening.

VAFA clubs already 'find a way' - have for some time - and you and I could personally run through a host of them over a beer or two that we are aware of.

And absolutely the vafa will decrease in size - and by design IMO
