I believe it is informed by positional data over time, and it does change for specific players - Heeney has been a Mid-forward, a General Forward and a Midfielder at different times since 2019, and Lloyd shifted from General defender to Midfielder in 2024 and he's currently logged as a General Forward.

However I think for practical reasons, positions are only logged by how it looks at stoppages and it takes a bit of time for reassignments to occur. I assume there's also some reference either to height or marking data or both, to differentiate general defenders and forwards from key defenders and forwards.
I've posted a link to the whole article on general discussion. Mateo indicates he allocated the positions himself subjectively and ignored goals scored by "others".

Fox Footy gave Logan McDonald a whack as our most "overpaid" player.

I haven't rated McDonald's season to date, but imagine being a pundit for Fox Footy - or any footy media organisation - and having the nerve to use the word "overpaid."
These are the same morons that were whacking Charlie a couple of weeks ago. They (much like us), have no idea of what the coaches are asking of Logan, so to me if he's still in the team come Sunday, he's doing what is asked of him regardless of his paycheck.

Sanderson on SEN this morning said he's important
Woth a listen as he analysed our upcoming game

The Curnow whack was bait and made little sense, Logan i can sort of understand 6yrs on the list relatively modest returns every year its said he will kick 50+ never gets close.

Pridham on the draft changes

1777528287319.webp

SYDNEY chairman Andrew Pridham says teams that draft players out of northern Academies should have to pay a fee of $200,000 to the club that developed the player after the AFL's bidding changes were unveiled.

"They've changed the rules so we've got to live with it. The thing I think is more than worthy of discussion is if we're spending three and a half million dollars (per annum) developing players for the benefit of other clubs, we think it's only equitable there's a payment made to the Academy where those players come from to reimburse for the cost of their development over many years," Pridham told AFL.com.au.

The main boards gonna looove that idea.

Unpopular view incoming:

Pridham's statement was silly.

We are not "developing players for the benefit of other clubs" - we are developing players with a view to strengthening the talent pool and game in NSW.

If Pridham's position were to apply, what's to stop (for example) Claremont saying "we want the Swans to pay for all the money we spent developing Gus Sheldrick". Or Norwood for Ned Bowman. Or any of the other WA, SA and Vic junior clubs that we've drafted from.

Pridham's statement, to me, sounded petulant.

I would say the difference is relatively simple.

Claremont is not directly financially-affiliated with any AFL club that benefits from any player they develop. The Swans Academy is.

Petulant would be to threaten to close down the Swans academy immediately.

Ah yeah he started with the Wheelo/AFL ones but "made some captain's calls" on reclassification of some guys.

Yes, that would be petulant too.

The arguments about the academies has become a game of "opinion ping-pong", with statements out of various club executives becoming more and more hysterical with each return shot.

And they should this is rubbish

"opinion ping pong".. yep, I guess they're trying to communicate to the lowest common denominator. Just like American politics or AFL general media. I would hope that the discussions between the AFL and Club bosses are a bit more intelligent.

The AFL needs to step back and ask themselves 'are the systems we've introduced achieving what they're supposed to achieve'?
NGAs - Q.. are NGAs bringing more kids from multicultural backgrounds into the AFL? A.. No, all the kids drafted via NGAs would be playing AFL with or without the NGAs
Free Agency - Q.. Is free Agency resulting in, encouraging talent being dispersed equally across Clubs ie. are players moving from top clubs (with tight salary caps) to bottom cubs (with salary cap space)? A.. No, the best players are moving from bottom clubs to top clubs.
Father Son - Q.. Is it fair? Do we love the romance? A.. No and No it makes me vomit (one club players were romantic but the AFL has done everything possible to kill them off! so I dont buy the romance argument)
Northern Academies - Q.. Are they expanding the game in NSW / QLD? Are they producing extra talent for the game? A.. Yes and Yes

Solution (brief)
identify all 4 policies as individual policies
Tighten rules on NGAs so they produce more players from varying backgrounds for the AFL and aussie rules in general
Scrap free agent compo picks
Make romance expensive (diamonds, French Riviera holidays etc are expensive) - 20% loading on draft points
Northern Academies - tighten rules
- Suns dont have access to Darwin
- Lions dont have access to kids playing their last two years for Sandringham dragons (happened 2024 draft)
- Giants academy is in Canberra (not helping junior footy in western Sydney) move Giants to ACT or move Academy to western Sydney
- Swans..
Dear Swans
You're doing a fantastic job at expanding the game into the biggest market in Australia, our wallets at the AFL are genuinely grateful. We applaud you on the 15-20 players you've produced currently on AFL lists (including Pies, Crows and Giants), this is especially important with the 19th and 20th teams coming soon. We are grateful and applaud QBE, the Basil Sellers Foundation and other Swans sponsors for funding this.
Please reach out for help anytime.

with thanks

Yeah, I don't know why academies and father-son picks keep getting lumped into the same conversation as if they’re the same thing.

One involves years of investment, coaching, education, and development for kids who may never have played the game otherwise.

The other requires your dad to have been good at footy, and poor at using contraception. They are not the same.
