I'm sure that if we'd known Darcy would do an ACL, English would miss weeks, and Lobb would miss a month, we'd have asked the question.

To be fair it only took the English injury for Bevo to go all in on a kid who wasn't ready. Darcy and Lobb were available for Hawthorn and Geelong and we decided no ruck was the best play

The thing I saw tonight, and it is something I notice in a lot of games, is how selfish our players can be. The amount of times I see opposition players shepherd in marking contests, when giving the ball, or when allowing a team mate to get the ball is crazy, then we have our team, and I just don't see it. Barring a few players, there is no mongrel, no desire to do the hard things that aren't glamorous because that's what the team needs. Freo did that a lot tonight, particularly over that 7 goal run.

We need to finish below Port and just take Butters through the ore season draft. Be ruthless. We have too many holes to gove up 3 x 1st round picks.
I actually think it would be dumb for Butters to choose us because of the fact we have so many holes and a poor coach.
I think some of the lower teams who have had better picks while we've hovered around mid table will start leapfrogging us once Libba, Treloar and Lobb have gone and Bont starts slowing down.

Why? All of Buku, O'donnell, Coffield, Selwood, Williams, Jacques, Walker, and Cleary can play that role. We need an actual competent key defender to free up some of those guys to play that role.
I don't know why you're not seeing O'Donnell as a proper key defender. He played that role to end last year and start this year and was decent enough at it. He's not in the same category as Selwood, Williams, Jacques at all lol.

He was awful as key defender last year. Let scrubs like Calsher Dear and Amiss kick bags on him. Looked to have improved a bit this year but think he would be better playing as a third tall

Have you seen what we currently have down there ?
Yep and have you seen either play at state level?

Darcy’s field kicking is as bad as I’ve seen for a league footy player (not to say it might not improve) and Croft is not too far off.

Plus both lads are very light. They are years away from contributing as real key position players.

Thats why you give them an extended run as key backs at a lower level.

No good having 5-6 competent AFL key fwds. We need defenders

Don’t feel Emmett and Croft are ruckman anyway - we should be developing them as defenders.

Smith is only 20 and not ready yet.

Really hope in the MSD we get a big, mature ruckman just someone who will competitive to help out English.

That would allow English some help and let everyone else I settle in the positions they can develop and succeed.

Any of Croft, Emmett, Walker, Will Darcy could end up as key defenders.

But these guys don't have the strength to be 1st or 2nd tall defender (yet). But they can still contribute as a forward now which is probably more important for their development. We don't need a 3rd tall defender.

The developing spine of Will Darcy, Croft, Smith, Emmett and Busslinger is a great pool. The won’t all work and will need to work them around to find the best role but given that Darcy and JOD are also very young - our focus should be on stars and role players.

All the top teams know we pay hands off football. Last week even the first game defender crashed into our forwards with intent and made it easy to clear - we try a low touch punch - this will not work. Cox and Pearce bullied us - so did Barrass and Battle, Sydney etc. Our defenders need to be &***holes - crashing and hurt not try to steal or clear.

I thought Coffield was very good at that other than his standard 2-3 brain farts. Lid he can do that he is effective and held his player until he and the rest of the team got tired - he started looping his kicks again and also going to easily and changing his mind that put everyone off / previously looking much stronger. Khamis never does this and I am not sure I know if a successful tall defender who doesn’t use his body in contact. It’s why Wilkie and Morris and Rampe can be effective at the same height. Sellwood has been fantastic as has Buderick - they are. Real defenders. But they need some mates.

I know I have said this before but I would go for Riccardi as a key back - he has size, swagger and will be much cheaper than Ballard (who I would out as top priority) or go for Weitering - Carlton needs to make some big calls - he needs to play in a contender.

I do like that the team enquired about Keane and Butts - not stars but role players. We should keep at that but need to go for two hard and get some moneyball growth in the team.

Emmett looks high potential but need someone now. I do wonder whether Smith could be that - he moves pretty well and has mongrel?

There were a couple we considered in the draft ??Scoble?? But they are also kids but let’s be specific - if we can have a star we want a hard aggressive role players. Nothing fancy. Has to be someone out there.

MSD / mature ruck or KPD

If we could come out of this draft with one star, El Souki and a couple of high ceiling kids. Would be great.

Have been told a player of interest for us in the MSD is Marcus Herbert 183cm defender/Midfielder. He is 23 and vice captain of Geelong's VFL side.
On the radar of several clubs apparently. Averages 26 disposals and 5.6 tackles. No idea if he's what we need but reading his own comments, he's very keen to prove himself at AFL level.

Good to hear. I brought him up in this thread a couple weeks ago as a player who would be a good fit for us. Could play most games for us in the spot Harmes would otherwise have filled

We're arguably the only club in the comp that chose not to have a mature back up ruck option.

The first game English missed, we didn't turn to Darcy or Lobb. We threw a kid to the wolves.
