Autopsy Round 8, 2026: Positives and Negatives vs Richmond

Evidence from level 5 was the structure in transition. Yes our skills are shit, but Richmond were somewhat structured well behind the ball to make it hard for us.

When they transitioned, the used about 4 possessions end to end with players goal side everywhere.

The messed up handball to the goalsquare late in the game which would have put us more than a goal up was a shocker. Was actually harder to stuff it up.

Thank god we are away for the next game.

I'm usually pretty optimistic with footy but that was a really, really bad game. Both teams are not at AFL standard. The AFL is really feeling a bit cooked - if your team gets stuck rebuilding it's 5+ years of unwatchable footy.

Young kids were great again but the team is currently less than the sum of its parts. They are so low on confidence. You can tell they have been drilled on better inside 50s, but all that meant was they were hesitating and not sure. This is all down to coaching.

The glass half full part says we improve once it clicks. The glass half empty makes me feel McQualter is not up to it. If he can't turn it around by the bye, I hope the club sounds out an experienced coach to come in and take over at the end of the year.

I get the impression I was watching a different game judging from most of the comments in here. Effort and intensity was fairly good all day. Our skills were not.

I think a few people are overreacting here. Game was poor, however I actually believe most of the gameplan is working but has some crucial issues which may or may not be intentional currently.

The forward structure is clearly collapsed to assist us in contested/congested ball and stoppages. However, we get the ball and our only option is to boot it to our talls sitting in the forward 50 with no smalls to gather the ball off the ground. It also allows the opposition play a spare in defence like Vlastin today or Wilkie last week.

Forward structure clearly needs to improve and better spread by our talls in a need.

Also in turn, our defensive running needs better coaching.

Hold on tight guys, I think the fruits of the labour are coming soon.

we need to get more speed on the ball the backline killed us. to much stop look and look again. speed the game up it may not help us win any games but the way we are going we wont be winning any more games this year.

Harley was better than Duursma in his first year and kicked better goals. We are so quick to forget
I don’t agree with this. At all in fact.

I think people overstate Harley’s first year. I don’t believe Harley has worked anywhere near as hard or given as much effort as Duurs has so far this year.

I was at the game and what I saw needs someone to do a Benny Hill music collage of how bad we were, skills are worse than I saw at a reserves Peel game 2 weeks ago. Can't pick up the ball, decision making is Aus Kick level, crabbing it sideways must be the plan from Mini because its how we go forward every time, zone is the team rule, Hewitt refuses to tackle and is so out of this league its cringe, Harley has to have a 50m give away clause in any new contract and Cole should never play again.

In two weeks time we have a late Sunday game against the Giants. Will be a good chance to be our lowest (non-covid) home crowd at Optus. Only got 46K today in a good timeslot against a team we should have beaten who have a reasonable fan base in WA. Next time it's a shit timeslot, a virtual guaranteed thumping, against a team with no local support - maybe playing to a half empty stadium will put things into perspective for the administration...

Players seem to be over-infatuated about stats as Mini is.

It’s a young side with a lot of inexperience. The coach - regardless who it is - isn’t going to put the spotlight on those who are playing poorly. It’s their only spin mechanism.

Oh well the players have moved on quickly enough…. Wouldn’t want to be doing recovery , nor mingling with some premiership players of the club to maybe learn something would we?

They aren't wrong though 64 inside 50's to 48. Even with shit skills we really should have won that if we had better forward connection.

Yze made comments about stats that eagles were better in that they are trying to achieve. so its not just the fans that want a positive.

we lost the game, yes. but 2nd half was better than 1st, which means we still have ability to adjust.

what cost us in this game in particular are the tall defenders and their inability to take interceptions OR hold onto marks when they get their hands on it. Richmond did this better than us. 3-4 better efforts and we win the game comfortably

yes yes yes, transition blah blah, Richmond got killed in transition too. we were running back and forth a lot better than last 3 weeks and it was obvious on the ground. people talk like we got smashed.

would have been scheduled for a while, not much recovery you can do right after a game, Harley one of the few players that can hold their head high

odd post

this will go down like a lead balloon this week.

I find it infuriating hearing the club come out with that shit. We know what we saw and it's clear the club is still in deep trouble even after years of this. Yeah we've got some elite young talent, but its surrounded by dysfunction. We have a major retention crisis ahead.

CDT and Duursma gotta be the ****ing softest blokes I’ve seen.
Schoenberg-How this bloke gets a game is beyond me
Hewett-**** off back to wafl you dud
Champion- I rate you, but you genuinely are brain dead
Jobe- your a jet, but you gotta find a way to stay in games
Duursma- inability to hit targets with short handballs cooked ys.
Cole- VILLAGE
Duggan- one week it’s disposal efficiency the next week it’s making lefau look like a jet, seriously the wokest captain ever
Young- dont even have to say anything

Side note**
Umpires were putrid today, but isnt a valid excuse
WE ARE SHITHOUSE
Your a ****en Dockers supporter **** off, dick head.

Harley so woke he likes to watch Neanderthals punch on. What a snowflake.

If he cared about this club at all he'd be watching a replay of the game right now and taking notes.

It’s just the horrifically slow ball movement when we’re approaching forward 50 that killed us so often today. Players looked like they had no idea or confidence in what they were supposed to do.

Compare that to Richmond, whose forwards came up the ground, leaving space in behind, and then killed us with the quick chaos style ball over the top.

We refused to push our forwards up enough to create space, and then continued to bomb it into massive contests, and got repeatedly beaten at ground level, Richmond clear it and we’re out of position defensively, rinse and repeat.

The only way to make it work with that much clutter inside 50 is to do what T-Mac did with the pass to Jake. Wait, be patient, and hit the leading forward. That said, not many of our players are capable of the pass he hit to Jake so it’d probably end up in a turnover anyway.

Robert Walls would just put 'em all in the ring.

It’s not a good look an hour after the game being out the door especially when you have just lost a game to a side who hasn’t won all year and was missing half its team….

Just confirms the players really don’t care
