That makes no sense. Surely all such picks constitute 'points' just like any other. Next you will be telling me that you can't match bids late in round one because clubs have to dip into picks that aren't in play until the second night.
That's how you know you're interpreting a new AFL rule correctly.

This is some of the most embarrassing punditry I have ever heard from Jack Riewoldt. Sadly he is the symptom of a bigger issue in today's footy media. They don't even try to behave in an objective manner anymore.

“He’s an NGA prospect for Richmond.” Not anymore stupid.

Walker is a top 5 pick, but that is all at this stage. Maybe in 5 yrs time he's worth two first round picks, but not now.

We have a lot of players to replace so we need a good young player with each first and second rounder we have.

If there is talent staring at your face you take it. You can get good players with later picks but our list manager and developing side is complete garbage.

Especially one can is genuinely a Pick 1 talent in the draft.

So riddle me here: we have pick 3 and Cody gets a bid at 1, we use 3 and norths second to match.. would that do it? And then if the port NGA player gets bid on in the top 5 we then get an additional end of round one pick back? Is that correct? This is on the proviso that we have already traded out Swans first pick this year, so that pick is no longer ours.

I think I’ve got this right …

If we finish 18th -

Pick 1 - Bid on Cochrane. Port matches.
Pick 2 - Take HVH
Pick 3 - Bid comes on Walker (1961) Use Sydney’s Pick 16 (924) and our Pick 23 from North (653) to cover Walker and take a 390-point deficit into 2027 draft.

Our next pick is round 2 compensation pick for Cochrane bid. We also retain GCS second.

Gain: HVH, Walker and round 2 compo
Lose: Pick 1; Pick 16 (Sydney); Pick 23 (North’s second rounder); 2027 pick downgrade

It’s a good result.

if we finish 17th/16th
Pick 1 - Bid comes on Walker
Trade out Sydney’s 2026 first and our 2026 third to Port Adelaide for a 2027 first

Use our 2026 first and North’s second to cover bid on Walker

Trade Ports 2027 first and GCS 2026 second to get back into 2026 round 1

Gain: Walker; 2026 first rounder
Lose: Pick 2/3; 2026 Pick 23; 2026 Pick 27; 2026 Pick 40

Not nearly as fruitful - and much harder to wrangle - compared to finishing last.

Scenario improves greatly if Cochrane bid comes before Walker bid.

No end of 1st round pick. Our 3 will be swallowed by 1, therefore not moved back, therefore no extra 1st rounder.

Sydneys first should we hold it will slide back to match the bid, not North 2nd.

We aren’t going to finish 18th.

We’re shit but Essendon, Richmond and WC are just as if not worse.

Those teams will pencil us in as a winnable game and go all out for the win. We will be 1-11 before the Essendon game and mentally cooked with less incentive to win. I'm not so sure we don't fumble the bag and drop at least 2 of those games.

If we finish last, bid on Cochrane and Port matches the bid then the bottom 5 teams slide back a spot and get a compo pick (except for Port).

In your scenario I wonder at pick 3 whether an Essendon or Richmond would be less likely to bid on Cody if they have already gained a bonus pick from the Cochrane match? It’s not like they can get another bonus pick by bidding on Cody, and their compo pick at #24 isn’t going to be improved by bidding on Cody.

You’d think they will purely to make us pay for him. Ala west coast with Dean last year

Odd I know, but just what I’ve read. A few people on here have said the same so I’m taking it as correct 🤷
