Probably not getting much criticism because he is actually out on the field playing but he is seriously on a Tate Pears trajectory right now.
i haven't seen the game. do you mean pears trajectory insofar as injuries have ruined him? i think tayte pears is one of my favourite ever bombers and prior to getting that spleen or whatever injury he was tracking to be an elite defender.

Goddam that’s a low bar. Pears once out-positioned Tredrea in a contest. That is literally the highlight of his career.

That was first year Hurley

Did a number on Fev. Fev had a bet going that he wouldn't last the game on him and the coach would move another defender to cover him

That bet was with Darcy Daniher.

Fev killed him but kicked like 4.7 and we won

More a comparison of a really promising player who did not make it.

Ah yes that’s right. Blurry memories of small victories for our club in the last 20 years 😂 I was in the ball-park though. I was definitely thinking of Pears but as mentioned above I got his opponent wrong.

Defensively OK but can't take a mark to save his life right now. Is a beautiful kick so he would instantly go from meh to awesome if he starts taking a few intercept marks because he really will make a difference transforming defense into attack.
Its weird because this time last year he was playing so much better. I think just down on confidence along with many others.

pears gave fevola an absolute bath on a friday night when i was about 15 or 16 years old. went to the g with my old man. just one of those things in footy that sticks hey. he peeled off and sent the ball forward a couple of times that lead to goals. he was very quick closing space on the lead.

also it was hurley who took care of tredrea very early (i think even game one).

When we have so many issues atm it’s easy to disect everything and pick it all apart. He has had body issues since we drafted him and I think the goal for him for this year is to just get thru it with minimal injuries. It doesn’t help that we are getting killed in the midfield and the defenders are getting no help up the ground.

Most players thruout their careers have up and down moments. He is not at his best but he is not alone right now.

Unfortunately our backline doesn’t have any real leaders playing. Ridley and Redman not being there are big losses atm.

Needs Ridley back asap to be the boss down there

He’s alongside McKay who is radiating “do we actually have to be here” vibes

Kind of the opposite of that teammate who makes you walk a foot taller

Reid looks pretty average right now but we have seen that his ceiling is considerably higher

Haven’t seen the same Reid we got against Sydney last season, this year.
Too true - he has been pretty awful this year.
I had higher expectations - based on that great stretch last year.

Same old same old story for another one of our players... get a glimpse and then we hold on to that for too long when the bloke gets nowhere near that level ever again - I am worried.

A successful intercept game needs among other things pressure on the opposition ball movement to slow it down and allow the defenders to get set up. I’m sure you can all see the problem here
Agree 100%. Just think his starting position and how he is reading the ball is simply not working right now.

I’m struggling to think of a single game where Reid, McKay, Ridley and Redman all played together. It would really help Reid (and McKay tbf) to be able to play in a settled backline.

I’d consider Hawthorn to have the best defence in the league and I’d say Battle and Barrass have just about played every game together since they came across. Hardwick, Sicily, Impey and Amon hardly miss too and that continuity is so critical.

A backline of the four Essendon players abovementioned with Farrow, Roberts and maybe Hayes, Kondo and McGrath is decent on paper - but how will we know when they never play together?

it’s decent in some ways but a good forward line beats all those guys. Only McGrath is beating his oppo 1v1. The rest can kick, but are yet to show proper 1v1 defensive prowess.

Good teams smash us partially because they can beat us all over the ground in 1v1s. Coaches know this, and I swear they give their players extra license to take us on because we just slide off them.

That backline needs to show a bit more IMO.
