gotta say I love the spread of our coaches votes so far this year

30+: Wilkie (32)
25+:
20+: Wanganeen-Milera (22)
15+: Sinclair (19)
10+: Hall (10), Marshall (10)
5+: Garcia (8), Higgins (7), Sharman (7), Wilson (6), Hill (5)
1+: Silvagni (3), Owens (2), Windhager (1)

lots of votes there for the future core: Nas, Hall, Hugo, Wilson, Sharman, Owens, Windy.

Very clinical second half after being quite sloppy and lethargic to start the game. Important to consider that we had to deal with some important late outs. Plenty to like and improve on.

I was watching the highlights while I was sitting on the toilet taking a massive Carlton, and I was reaffirmed by how much of a team performance it was. There were some great individual performances across each line. The game plan is starting to click and our forward half efficiency is giving us reward for effort (the opposite against the Pies in OR).

A solid past month has got us back to 4-4 heading into arguably the toughest section of our fixture. If we can sneak a win or two against the odds, it will set us up in the back-end of the year. We will know more about this group over the next month.
Id have to go back and re-watch in detail but I feel like we were matching up incorrectly by playing more of our running gameplan whilst Carlton was "surging" with their strong contested game and we weren't going with them.

Half time I think we went harder with the contested work (sending Garcia in without tagging etc..) equaled them and then broke them with outside run which they couldn't keep up with and faded hard.

I do not think we will ever have a "dominant contested" midfield with this group but will have much more of a balance of equalizing in the middle then punishing on the outside.

votes for 6 players born in/after 2002 is the equal most in the league (those you mentioned minus Sharman)

alongside North (McKercher, Trembath, FOS, Wardlaw, Sheezel, Curtis)

Pies are last with only one player. who happens to have more votes than our 6 combined

Add in having a proper full forward in Caminiti to free up Sharman, Owens, Marshall

Tauru can develop in defence. We are working on his ball use so it's not like playing him in the 2s is restricting his development. There is no rush with him
I'd still bring him in for Dougal at times depending on matchups, and to give Dougs or maybe even JSOS a rest at times so their bodies don't break down as they have previously.

I'd prefer Tauru to Dougs against some of the smaller, quicker forward lines.

10 Rowan Marshall (STK)
7 Cooper Sharman (STK)
5 Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (STK)
4 Bradley Hill (STK)
2 Max Hall (STK)
2 Mitch Owens (STK)
Clearly Ro is p*ssed off having to share rucking duties 😎

Great that Sharman is starting to get some recognition.

Apparently according to Purple / Lloydo .... Marshall should look elsewhere where he can be no 1 ruck and not have to worry about playing 2nd fiddle getting 20+ kicks & 3 goals 😵‍💫

Keeps playing like that--hold him to his contract, baby!

I actually think he is starting to enjoy working in tandem with TDK and you could see it on the weekend. Having that support now, it will give Marshall a longer career as his body won't get bashed around as much.

Why do these experts believe Ro enjoys having his body bashed up each week as the solo ruckman?

I’ve never seen Marshall look so happy on field

I also like the fact now we don't just rely on one ruckman to get 45 hit outs. It is much better having the load shared between the two of them where they collectively get about 40. Also, taps aren't just about quantity--have to look at the quality of taps, and TDK definitely has some tap craft. He will get better as well, I think.

They're also different: styles make fights. We can use one forward and one in the ruck depending on matchup.

Saw First Crack and Leigh Montagna had an interesting take on the Hammer playing forward. Basically that regardless of the figures he is getting, the structure he is providing is helping Owens and Sharman play so well.

But the armchair generals know better and Hammer should really just be delisted ;)

So happy this is finally being explored by Ross & co and noticed by analysts. Caminiti should've always been a forward. With a couple more games his individual output should improve too. Sets up our forward line to look really damaging going forward especially when Ryan Higgins Wilson are at their feet

Thought it was pretty obvious that having another larger body forward (either King or Hammer would help free up Sharman / Owens) ..... same with Howard down back helping Wilks / JSOS

Nearly all of the better teams have 3 tallish strong marking forwards

Sydney - Curnow / Amartey / McDonald
Fremantle - Amiss / Treacy / Voss
Hawthorn - Gunston / Lewis / Dear or Chol
Brisbane - Allen / Morris / Rayner
Geelong - Cameron / Neale / Henry or Danger
Gold Coast - JU-H / King / Read
Adelaide - Thilthorpe / Walker / Fogarty
Melbourne - JVR / Jefferson / Mihocek / Fritsch
Bulldogs - Darcy / Naughton / Croft or Lewis
North - Larkey / Darling / Trembath
GWS - Hogan / Cadman / Stringer

Structure is king - both forward & back

Have always seen Hammer forward. Apart from Coops and Chito getting 2nd and 3rd backs, Joey said the two rucks could have less time on field and both only had 75 % TOG so they were fresh when rucking and going forward. Also reckon TDK is over his injury, had his jump back and was clunking marks.

Having Max and Hammer injured ( and Keeler) had us skinny for talls. Hammer really improves the forward structure.
Coops game was his best. He was like a classic CHF.

The slightly annoying thing is that it was pretty obvious to many of us laypeople that the Wilkie, SOS, Caminiti, Tauru mix was bad on paper and just as bad in reality.

Not the first selection blunder in the early rounds of the season (see selecting Harry Boyd together with Marshall in round 1 last year).

Agree, but I'm also not gonna fault the coaches for wanting to try different things especially early in the season. If we start to settle now after experimenting with all those different structures the past couple of months then I think the coaches have done well

They had a pretty simple triangle outlet stoppage and contest structure and they hold that pretty well. Voss was a clearance beast and it looks like it’s all he coaches well. It’s also under 12s stuff and pretty easy to fix.

We essentially went man/sweeper to start the second half, got their clearance domination stopped and the game stopped. It was obvious on tv and presumably obvious to Ross. As soon as we stopped their clearance domination (not the numbers but the type of clearance they were getting) they started to drop their heads, the rest was pretty elementary.

No TDK or Flanders says something.
