Daily reminder to get your melts ready for 5pm Saturday after the youngest team in the league getting a potential beat down by the oldest team in the league in front of 85k + of their supporters. With two less days break, travel etc etc.

Got to lay the groundwork early!
Daily reminder that life is unpredictable, sometimes capricious, and the universe is setting itself up to see a day dedicated to fawning over one man end in a loss to one of the worst teams in modern football history.

For once, cruel gods, be on our side.

Not sure what to make of his coaching yesterday. Looking at who GWS has played recently and their formline, Eagles should have won at home.

McRae coached well against the Swans. This coming week will be a good indication of where Mini is at.

Don't think you can rate a coach game by game TBH.

Can only make an informed call by the end of the year I reckon.

Collingwood team defense is no joke.

Granted you get a better gauge over a longer period but I think you can see if someone coached well or not in most games. I'm just not sure how to rate his coaching yesterday.

He, like the majority of the list, is learning in his role and we should be able to see improvement on a game by game basis even if it is minor. GWS were bad yesterday, I'm not sure how much Minis coaching was involved in that.

Our last quarter pressure rating over 250 (insanity) had something to do with GWS being "bad".

If mini cops it when the effort isn't there, he must get celebrated when it is.

GWS haven’t been in great form but they were still 4 wins/5 losses going in and comfortable favourites to win

McQualter took away their one wood of scoring from defensive half transition - something that’s been a distinct weakness of ours - with some astute coaching moves

Using Yeo across half back to quell their momentum in the third quarter was also very important and again something we’ve historically been poor at

It wasn’t a Ross Lyon style coaching masterclass™️ but it did show an ability to formulate a plan and have the players buy in to execute it

He’s copped a lot of criticism of late, some deserved and some not so much, but last night was a tick in the he can coach column

I’ve liked McQualter’s tagging jobs last week and yesterday, both relatively effective. Interesting he’s taken this long to fully back a tagging job, considering that was his niche as a player. Maybe he wasn’t confident in our ability to execute a game plan, without sacrificing some of our own players games.

Hopefully he has Hough and Murdoch on top of Naicos and Pendlebury. It’s completely farcical how this has gone down.

As a team we have clear reasons to want to stick it to the pies, but he’d even have additional personal reasons to do so (2010 grand finals at saints, 2018 prelim at tiges, round 16 last year etc). Needs to be a big motivator for him and the team.

Hopefully we give them hell and spoil the party (or make it one for Harley’s 50th 🥳 )

Hough on Naicos for sure but not sure about Murdock on Pendlebury. Pendlebury is either a mid or deep forward and I’d rather keep Murdock in our forward line tagging a HBF because that means we don’t lose his forward pressure and he can still bob up for a goal or two. I’d be sending him to Houston or Jaicos.

Run with roll for Wuurm. Be good for him experience wise.

The extent of the criticism of Mini of late has been unwarranted IMO.

Apart from Yeo, Kelly and now BBB Bailey, there isn’t a lot of top-shelf experience in the side. 10 kids playing under 20 games or there abouts has been a regular feature in the side. Yes, we’ve got some quality kids Harley (21), Ginbey (22 in Sep), Shanahan (20 in Aug), Duurs (19 in June), Lindsay (19) but there is still a lot of inexperience with a high number of mature-aged recruits playing such as Murdock, McCarthy, Young & Hutchinson. This amount of youth and inexperience is prone to inconsistency and can be exposed at times. For example, too many of our players had quiet ones or were poor with the ball against Richmond. Comparatively we had three players play their best game at this level; Bailey, Harley and Davis with many others playing one of their best as well.

I’ve said for a more than a year now, we need to continue to bring some quality experience to support the talented kids we have. When the likes of Graham, Edwards & Robertson went down, this left us incredibly vulnerable. It was noticed in large patches against the likes of Sydney & St Kilda among others.

I kind of agree and disagree with that. I think that a few players are too scared to pull the trigger on hitting a leading forward when the opportunities present. A lot of good leads were ignored on the weekend.
Forwards can only present, if the passes aren’t made that puts the problem with the players delivering into the 50.
Having ignored the leads they bomb it in long.

One of the Eagles possibly Kelly said the mids needed to hold onto the ball a bit more instead of rushing the entry. Not the exact words but along those lines.

Some interesting numbers here, including TK as our best pressure player:

https://www.afl.com.au/news/1523000

Champion Data stats revealed the Eagles' forward half pressure factor of 202 across the game was their second best on record as players chased, tackled and smothered their way to a much-needed win.

Their overall pressure of 232 in the fourth quarter was their sixth best on record for a single term, restricting the Giants to only six uncontested marks and seven inside 50s as their ball-movement dried up completely.

This. Think it was Malakai that hit up Hutch on the lead for one of his goals. It stood out because it looked so weird for someone to actually lower their eyes for a change

Duggan blatantly ignored a perfect lead from J Will I think.in the last qtr to blast it long. Probably fair that he didnt back his kicking skills to hit though

One of the many issues with Liam Duggan.
