Their best bet is getting some existing "Essendone person" with actual recent coaching experience to coach and bringing Hird on as a publicity stunt for some role - whether it's assistant coach or purely background. That would give the masses something to cheer about and reduce the poor optics at having Hird in charge again that the wider community should have.

There’s no way Hird takes an assistant role, going off everything we know about the guy and the size of his ego. Would be blown away if he did.

Solomon, if he’s smart, won’t want Hird anywhere near the box either, because it would only be a matter of days before the nuffies started agitating for Hird to be the real senior coach or for James to be seen as the “brains” of anything Solomon does.
