When Maxwell got interviewed at half time the first thing he (very smugly I thought) said was "Did we look hungry?" As if the side had already proved themselves in just one half of footy.

The comment just made me think that in his mind he just thinks "Yup, we've done enough and that'll do it". When the fact is, it's not enough and what we've been dishing up is not good enough.

I'm not sure why, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I didn't like it and it came across extremely cocky and as if he thought that the job was already done and the way we've played this year has shown to me that we think that we're it and a bit just by playing a couple of good patches every now and then.

By the way, I should probably add that had we have played four good quarters and got a good win (80+) and he said it AFTER the match I probably wouldn't have minded it.

In referring to your thread title, our Team Mentality - is soft

Yes, we need our Captain to be a Robot and say the normal cliche's that every footballer says

You know like "The boys are playing well" and "I'm just happy doing my part" no room for any of this fancy free talk

If that was how Maxwell reacted to being interviewed by king then maybe the time has come for Luke Ball to be made captain because I am certain ball would not have answered in such a manner in fact I do not think Maxwell himself would have.
I think it does show how smug some of our players are becoming and if Maxwell thinks it is okay to be a smartarse then ball needs to become captain ASAP because it does show a sense of self satisfaction and even more importantly complacency.

To me the mentality was summed up by the goal difference after half time -
Collingwood 4 - Footscray 7!

We had a perfect start to notch up a resounding victory and the way the boys played after half time showed just exactly that - show boating - not good enough on my mind.

I just wish our captain didn't sound like a meat pie.

He was having a dig at Kingy, a jab in the ribs for a laugh.
Sometimes I think we get caught up in the BS cliches and having to tell everyone what they want to hear.
He could have said 'Nah, not good enough, we're hungry for more, blah blah blah shit that we hear all the time.

I didn't see it, but I don't think it was more about him thinking that the team had done enough.

I think he meant was that the team was very hungry in the first half and, from all reports, dominated. So, yeah probably was smug about that. I don't think he expected the team to go downhill after that.

So in the end, massive egg on face for Maxwell.

He made the comment before Kingy had even said anything, it wasn't in response to anything.
And again, to make that comment at half time just shows that he was more worried about cracking a "joke" at half time when his head should be in the game and not thinking about articles in the paper.
Save that for after the match.
I respect what you're saying Swanny but it's exactly the stuff that I'm talking about. You not only get a physical break at half time but a very important mental break as well. To think that a player would be 'on' for a whole game is unreasonable. Just because he's had a crack it doesn't mean he is not aware of what needs to be done to continue. The players and coaches are not robots and with the increasing number if interviews and media scrutiny, we will see more of the human side. Think we better get used to some players not spilling the usual cliches and I'm glad.

Do we know if Maxwell and King know each other socially? If so this whole thread would be a joke really.

Just saw the interview for the first time (was at the game, was watching the replay just then on FF) and it sounded like a joke between two mates, even King took it well and they had a wink at each other and a thumbs up as Maxy ran away.

Nothing in it, move on.

You've gotta be joking. Just because you're a little slow doesn't mean Maxwell is cocky.

Don't really see the need to insult buddy, it's just an opinion and I haven't insulted you, Maxy or anyone else.
But if that's what you've gotta do to get your point across, then good on you.

That's where we disagree. Your opinion is quite insulting, considering Maxwell's career, the type of player he is and the values he displays everytime he pulls on the black and white. There was context to Maxwell's jibe that you seem to have missed. I find it insulting when a man's attitude is judged on one light-hearted comment when there are so many more tangible things that allow us to judge his approach to the game.

Anyway, Swanny36, my comment wasn't directed at you specifically but at several other posters that have seen this as an opportunity to bag our captain once again.

I do not know if I am one of the posters you refer to bud but I do not have a problem with Maxy at all but I do not like smugness especially after what we saw in the 2nd half yesterday and even if we had played better in the 2nd half than we did I still prefer a team,s play does it,s talking not clever remarks.
If this offends you then I am sorry but a little humility goes a long way.

I think you are missing the point here. It's not about him speaking out but the perceived attitude reflected in what he said.
Iskender
Another poster made an observation about players not being robots and I do not I do not have problem with that but we should expect better from our leaders than clever remarks especially when they come back and bite you on the arse as they did with Maxy yesterday.:thumbsu:

I'm getting pissed off with this lack of any ruthlessness (is that a real word?).

We had a real genuine chance to build some percentage, and completely slacked off. It was as plain as day that the run and pressure came to a halt. The Bulldogs didn't actually play any better, we just played a lot worse. Ridiculous. The sooner Bucks turns over the list, the better.

This lazy attitude that carried over after 2010 is really giving me the shits.

Media coverage of games has increased significantly over the years and it seems so have our expectations of players in dealing with this. At the end of the day they are footy players, not politicians who only skill is teflon speech. Still, I guess with the captain its different.
