Radio 1116 SEN 2024 Line-up

I reckon Hutchy has a really bad feel for the game right now. He's so NFL and US-obsessed that he seems to think that everything that works in American football can be translated/replicated in the AFL.

The same thing is happening with his attempt to re-brand SEN in the image of American sports stations. There's so little native sport content during the week that having one issue from which to base a news narrative only encourages hours of navel-gazing.

Alternatively, perhaps the Australian taxpayer can be asked to pay more for content it clearly wants and needs, but isn't willing to fund.

All I want to see and hear is a bit of balance, both sides of the argument in a politically neutral environment. Hold all politicians accountable instead of being their cheer leaders. They can't even achieve their charter, and you want money for more left wing views. Sky News which is full of right wing nutters has Patricia Karvelas hosting her own show and tries to give another perspective.

What, so you want to compromise any quality journalism for the sake of sponsorship? The ABC does all the national, regional and local reporting that no one else is willing/able to do, but you’ve got a grudge because of a wedding and some ranty left-wingers.

No one watches Sky News, so who cares what agenda they push and how they try to balance it. People do care about the ABC (especially it’s local and national radio) - hence why they have a large, loyal listener base. And people pay absolute stuff all for it.

I’ve seen Hutchy work up close - he’s very good at sponsor liaison and branding, but he’s primarily a businessman nowadays whose heart is in the US. SEN is a niche, commercial station at risk of having its audience cannibalised by a newly rebranded Macquarie. He has shareholders to answer to (including some of his closest mates), so his pressures are entirely different and wholly commercial. They’ve got little to teach the ABC - and just as little to learn in return.

To employ more self serving public servants who are not accountable to anyone. The ABC should be there to serve the rural areas of Australia, and Radio Australia. The rest of it should be sold off.
Not accountable to anyone. Read the Act and Charter.

As for this topic, I'm unsure whether Hutchy has the wherewithal to be in charge of programming. It's quite a specialised area and he's made some blunders.

Leech is a far better sports broadcaster than Maher. His microphone technique is appalling too btw. Many really good segments have been dropped. Alexander - I know she can be up herself - and Howcroft were both interesting and informative. Steve McBurney explaining weekends controversial umpiring decisions was another. Dropping professionals like Matt Grandland and Kevin Hillier was a blue. Frawley is grossly overrated and a pain. There's way too much talk back. Finey, with all his faults and some dud segments, was far more interesting and better value than his replacement. The incessant advertising insertions during calls and general programming puts me right off. The morning weekend programming is dreadful...............

Leech is a self centered dud

On this, do you think he underestimated the loyalty of listeners to on air talent as opposed to loyalty to a station?

I’d say he has.
Hutch may very well be a businessman.

However, he is just not as bright as he thinks he is.
Exhibit A: Danny Frawley.
Seriously what does he think DF delivers!

Exhibit B: Hverin?
Is there anyone more vanilla and so totally dull?

What he’s doing is a great shame.
Just can’t see the line up working.

I think he’s determined to provide the wider sporting public with a better product than they were getting when the sale was completed - or have ever had since SEN first came on the airwaves nearly 15 years ago.

I don’t believe that listeners are that loyal to the previous presenters - it’s just that some of the current pairings don’t work and that would be reviewed at the end of the calendar year (although breaking up KB and Turfy will be a hard personal decision).

It’s ages since I knocked around with any of his employees, some of whom are still with Crocmedia. But if there’s one thing I remember seeing and hearing, it’s the emphasis placed on sponsorships. Hutchy gets advertisers and gets them to stick with him, because he works so hard on the relationship and is a stickler for correct branding and product mentions. That means he’ll want presenters who will happily plug sponsors (especially through live reads). So it’s no wonder that, for instance, Andy Maher (a great sponsorship advocate) gets a show ahead of Francis Leach (too commercially critical). His biggest recruit probably isn’t even Gerard Whateley - rather, it will be the new SEN general manager whose career is built on sales and marketing.

Anyway, it’s early days and SEN is part of a bigger, national broadcasting plan. SEN’s current problems are thematic rather than programmatic and easily resolvable. The most important letter in the SEN acronym isn’t the S - it’s the E. If the station sets its stall as a sports news network, it won’t thrive.

Just to clarify: SEN 1116
Overall: Down 0.5 from this time last year; up 0.2 from survey 2
Breakfast: Up 0.2 v Jun 17; no change from survey 2
Morning: Down 0.6 v Jun 17; up 0.5 from survey 2
Afternoon: Down 0.2 v Jun 17; up 0.4 from survey 2
Drive: Down 1.6 v Jun 17; no change from survey 2
Evening: Down 1.5 from Jun 17; down 0.4 from survey 2

Those evenings numbers are pretty poor, especially since they're not really explained by the new Macquarie Sports listenership

But Hutchy sucked the “E” out of it like a two dollar hooker. There is zero entertainment in the SEN operation now.

That’s precisely my point - he’s a newshound at heart and his programming directions reflect that.

One of the great things about SEN’s old programming was the insertion of short slots that broke up the endless earnest sports chat and uninformed talkback - movies, TV, beer, careers, sports comedy, footy nostalgia, cars...just some light entertainment amidst the normal cycle.

The best long-term thing Hutchy is doing is buying into better live broadcasting rights. But in the short term the re-insertion of the smaller segments would be handy.

Really enjoyed Garrys take and brief discussion on the Anthony Bourdain saga. He explained how much it grinds his gears and ground his gears when people were skeptical about players opening up and explaining their depression demons. He elaborated that some queried the validity of Buddy Franklins withdraw from the AFL competition because he had depression (basically people believe BF had acquired a 3rd strike and by using depression avoided scrutiny, others added that the AFL need sydney to be successful and would not suspend BF anyway).

Garry said no one knows whats going on inside the person. Watson added that he knows Garry so well and sees how much the skepticism affects and angers him.

I think Garry was speaking from experience as well after it was revealed he has/had depression after his "affair" with Billy Brownless former squeeze Nicky Brownless went public/viral

All very well.
But all the sponsor relationships will be doomed if the audience bleeds out.
Because if you’re buying advertising you normally prefer a wider audience than Hutchinson’s immediate family.

Just my two bobs worth.

Have a listen when some peanut texts in having a crack at him, the confected angry response is hilarious, especially when compared to Finey's diatribes.
Mark F for all his diatribes knew lots of sports very well and had a personality.
He always explained his position and it was logical in progression.
Didn’t have to agree but you knew Mark was a real person.

Unfortunately the new guy may be a cardboard cut out. It’s a shame but he lacks any kind of pulse.

Absolutely. You'd be hard up to find anyone better suited to that shift than Mark.
