Can bet your bottom dollar they won't be getting Dan Lonergan. He doesn't like Gerard Whateley as he was part of the movement behind Lonergan's departure from the ABC a few years ago (among, primarily, other things with the higher ups). I'll be surprised if he comes to SEN.

Lonergan also had a brief spell at Crocmedia in the middle of 2017 which ended in blushes for Dan. I don't think they'll be hurrying after him again too soon.

Has to be better at the MCG. Friday night footy they have Triple M, SEN, AW, ABC, AFL live, 6PR, NRIS and channel 7

IIRC Channel 7 use the TV studio when they commentate and the radio stations obviously use the radio boxes.

However with the cricket, Channel 9 use a radio box for commentary (as do BT sport) while the TV studio is used as a studio for rain delays as well as a break-out room. Also at the 'G, one of the eight radio boxes are used for statisticians/scorekeepers during the cricket.

IF they did the get the cricket rights, you'd probably have Gerard and Huddo calling. If you wanted a team with three callers, offer Alison Mitchell some good coin to join from ABC. No idea who they'd get to be their experts. If they get cricket rights though, they really need to make SEN NATIONAL.

Late last year, SEN did a poll on what "football"-ie our game- should be called. In Vic., WA., SA, & Tas., nearly everyone calls it "football" or "footy". All School honour boards also refer to "Football"; & all Leagues are "Football" Leagues -not "AFL" Leagues.

I shuddered at the time -I don't like how some journos. etc say people play "AFL"; & I thought this poll might be a harbinger for SEN changing its name of the Code.
In NSW, the ACT, Qld., & the NT, however, I understand why the AFL sees strategic merit & "recognition" benefits in universally "branding" the Code as "AFL" there -"football" there can now refer to any of the 4 codes.

With the appointment of the high profile Whateley, who is well known nationally, I think it is probable that SEN wants to significantly expand its national footprint -& perhaps referring only to "football" for the code of Australian Football would be confusing in NSW, Qld, ACT, & the NT.

I would prefer that all national sporting & media organisations use the words "Australian Football" when referring to those who are playing our game. Our game's official title has been " Australian Football" since the 1880's. It has never been Australian Rules, Aussie Rules, or just Rules -these terms were first used in the nthn. states.

Soccer is trying to usurp the words "football" & "Australian football" for its game -to undermine the sense of national pride many have when we refer to our game as Australian Football. Soccer orgs. want to diminish our game's "Australian-ness"; & limit/negate/eradicate widespread useage of the words "our Australian game", "football", & "Australian Football". Soccer orgs. would prefer our patriotic leanings, for the game many of us think is the best in the world, are diminished.

In the USA, their soccer League is universally called Major League Soccer, & people play "soccer". Media orgs., sporting orgs., & soccer supporters would be HOWLED down if they referred to soccer as "American Football"; or only called American Football "NFL".
The USA, however, certainly has FAR less (per capita & possibly raw nos.) cultural cringers that Australia, unfortunately, has.

There is never any confusion when the games are called Australian Football, Rugby Union (or Union), Rugby League (or League), & soccer. "Soccer" is clear - & was widely used by the vast majority of people in Australia for c.100 years until 2005. The majority of the public here (& in the USA, Canada, Ireland, & NZ) still call that game " soccer" -no confusion! In the UK, it is still sometimes called soccer. We previously had the National Soccer League, & State "Soccer" Federations -& still have "Socceroos".

If there is good weather between Melbourne & Adelaide you can actually get a good reception of sen on 1116 in Parts of Adelaide , as the radio wave drop in and out on your am radio

There were a few quotes from Drew Morphett and I believe Longergan as well (to be corrected) in a Herald Sun piece one or two years ago. Morphett was evidently not too keen on Whateley.

As you would expect with the heavy victoria bias. That said im in SA and you couldnt pay me to listen to the Pro-SA Crows / Power dribble on the SA channels.

You seem pretty passionate about the code word war. But I think everyone generally refers to the sport that Richmond Tigers won the premiership in last year is "AFL". Players say they play AFL, non players too. But beforehand, pre AFL, I think people referred to the code as Aussie Rules, or footy.

Footy, having lived in the UK I know they also refer to their football code as footy. Interesting.

If people wanna call soccer football I could not care less. I myself am adaptable. People here still refer to soccer as soccer. Having played the sport here for a long time we all called it that. However, when referring to the national body that runs the code, we call it the FFA, or FFV here in Vic. When I speak to those from the motherland I call it football. It's just a nice thing to do with them, to welcome them to our lands.

The nickname socceroos will always stick despite the word Football being used more often. Why? Cause it rolls off the tongue. The last letter of soccer and the first letter of roos are the same. It flows.

I think the push for "football" to be used can be linked to the motherland. With a more patriotic push against those not of British ancestry or religion, there's a love for mighty England, or the Commonwealth. With that comes "football".

USA is a different fish kettle. They beat the Empire and became what they are today. We are inherently British. Monarchy!

In a nutshell, SEN or any other organisation asking what any code should be called is just clickbait and or trying to generate outrage and space.

Drew Morphett, who worked with Whateley for 10 years at the ABC, agrees with Robinson’s assessment that Gerard is ambitious, but differs in his assessment about how that ambition burns through.

“I’m in an awkward position here because I was made redundant by the ABC and Gerard took my spot calling cricket. Do you think Justin Leppitsch is going to absolutely love the bloke who takes over from him? I don’t think so,” said Morphett, 66.

“Having said that I think he’s a fantastic host on both AFL 360 and pre-match on the radio. He has an ability to put sentences together with clarity. He doesn’t require a lot of notes, relying on a sharp mind that has its own index. And he asks good questions.

“As a caller I personally don’t think he’s the greatest of all time. His style of calling a close game of football or horse race is to scream as loudly as he can with guttural tones. He loses clarity. You have to broadcast in gears.”

Morphett sat in the same office as Whateley for a decade and was intrigued by a personality he found “aloof and self-centred”: “Gerard is incredibly ambitious. Part of that is putting massive effort into winning awards and his entries are very good, even if he would have been shattered at not winning a Logie last year.

“He will end up the most decorated bloke in the history of Australian sporting broadcasting. Some of that comes though him being an incredibly hard worker and how he wrote that book on Black Caviar, which was very good, was amazing.”

When told that Morphett had been interviewed for this article, Whateley preferred not to respond as he couldn’t see “any upside”.
