Don’t think Hutch realises just because he is obsessed with something every one else will be.

He’s going down path to cut his listeners down
And I don't think you realise that just because you don't like something doesn't mean nobody else does.

The super bowl is huge, and NFL is only growing in Australia. This is a good move on his part

Perhaps a re-read is required.
Or perhaps I need a re-write.

All the other sports including American sports are fine. If done in smaller doses.
If any of these smaller sports are over worked I think they'll lose audiences over all.

Just my two cents worth.

Some good.
Lots not so good.

I don’t mind Lyon and Watson but they’re example of why Australian sports coverage lags behind American.

The Yanks can easily cover numerous sports and cover a sport as if they’ve been doing it for years. They have researchers that gather the info but just as important they make some effort to watch other sports as well.

If you’re hosting a prime time morning sports show why wouldn’t take the time to watch a number of other sports? Lyon and Watson just don’t bother. Producers and back up crew don’t bother either. That’s the whole problem with SEN in the past.

I mean the other morning it’s like they ran out of material at 7.30 and invited listeners to call and try and pick the next Liam Jones/?Townsend(tiger guy) i.e this years surprise. FFS it’s mid January!

All true. Lyon and Watson have returned in 2018 with the same apparent “part time” attitude to major sports coverage. Surprising really considerering what happened to Ox and Allen. Having little work ethic rarely works out well career wise.

Do you really think that apart from super bowl week, there's going to be a huge focus on American sports? Do you think KB, or Gary, or Andy Maher, are going to focus much more on American sports?

It's one week when nothing else is happening.

I don't know what knobs like chief Crock will do.

You might be right.

Ignoring American sport would be a pretty silly thing to do on an all sports network. I know a lot of people in the SEN demographic who are big fans of the NFL and the NBA. In the AFL off-season these competitions are all important for a lot of the hard corers.

I think the problem is when it comes to covering other sports on SEN (or Sportsday - a Crocmedia production) is not the on-air talent - we don't expect them to know everything about every sport - but the producers putting the program together.

It's not just their job to push the buttons, and line up the interviews, but also to adequately brief the on-air talent about who they are talking to, what that guest's background is, and key dot points about the issue they are talking about.

Unfortunately, sometimes you find big money being paid out for the on-air talent, but peanuts for the producers, thus you get the 'straight out of uni/radio school' talent, who a very green, and that results in a poor on-air product.

Generally good on air talent will have a good producer as part of the package in getting them.

Fair to say that to this point - SEN has been a development role for “talent” with Leach and KB excepted. Better and more experienced talent being recruited may well see better production.

Producers definitely do this. It's quite obvious. If you ever hear Gerard Healy interview a soccer or rugby player on Sportsday, he generally asks questions that are topical and has relevant information on hand. Gerard knows bugger all about sport outside of AFL, so to me it's evident he's been briefed beforehand.

Where producers do need to improve is in extra content. A host and their co-host can have a discussion on a certain topic and, yes, producers organise interviews, but what do we hear outside of that? To me, very little. This is where radio becomes boring. You can only have so many interviews and so many "outlandish" comments to provoke talkback throughout a show. There needs to be something different.

This is where Finey's program excelled. Despite whatever one's thoughts are on Mark Fine, his program was abundant with variety and made for good listening. Finey's downfall was many of these segments had run their race years ago and had become cringey. He needed a refresher. People got tired of listening about numbers and letters in sport.

You've partially answered in the last sentence. But that's only one hour of the week. It's not enough to get rid of him. What else had gone stale?

It seems Finey wasn't in the future plans because Hutch in his own words wants to be a serious player broadcasting "live sport" on weeknights.

What sport/s is out there that a sen listener is suddenly going to tune into ?

Local pub darts ? Lawn bowls night comps ?

And when they don't have live sports , Who are the new regular weekly guests that Heverin will get for his shows , will the listeners like them ?

Fine had one thing ahead of most presenters. Excellent knowledge of a variety of sports- to his credit.

He also researched eg made sure he watched every single game every week.
Bet you most don’t do that.
Be lucky if Mark Allen ever watched more than Collingwood games. He never came close in any other sport to duplicate his golf knowledge which means he just didn’t bother researching. Even his footy knowledge was sparse.

Fine knew football, cricket, greyhounds, Racing, soccer, golf etc.
That’s a credit to him.

Agree.
See post above.

I really liked the numbers type shows. Was all about recalling past things. Milne was encyclopaedic. If anything I’d have lessened the “regular callers” on those shows. Except the Duke, john is 90 plus and did super well each week.
But some of the others were a bit stale like Polly. He did the racing bit, but it was ok but when he was asked outside of his stated stuff he didn’t have the in-depth knowledge at times.
But we’re good segments the whole show.

A bit silly moving Fine on. Doubt the new guy has a segment on addiction. That was a gutsy thing to do.

I thought that to, prior to the post, and when hearing Hutchy say it yesterday. That's alright maybe during summer. But what is there Monday/Thurs during winter?

Even covering niche market leagues like the NBL and A-League can’t bring in that many listeners can it? I would be surprised if they rated higher than what Finey would usually rate, not withstanding the f bomb c bomb that we were treated to during an NBL game a month or so ago:D

EON sport tried that strategy and it failed badly.

Most people who follow those niche sports like myself will be watching it on the TV and as digital radio takes over from analogue more and more, the delay makes listening to it while you are at the game pointless. Even with AFL, the only time I listen while I’m at the game is via MMM on the FM radio on my phone, as the delay with digital makes it useless.

Hutchy also said yesterday that there are 3 new big names yet to be signed up to Sen

Who will they be ??

Now that their weekday lineup is finalised (sans Whateley’s Friday slot), they will have to beef up Crunchtime, Final Siren and maybe their Footy coverage.

I think Terry Wallace is a certainty to be on Saturdays in some capacity.

I’m guessing Rex Hunt a possibility to do Friday nights after the Footy like he did for 3AW last year. He may do some fishing show on weekend mornings as well.

I think they need more Women in their coverage, so perhaps Tiff Cherry or Caro to do Whateley’s Friday Slot.

Why isn't Whateley doing Fridays ?

KB does 6 days radio , Eddie does 6 sometimes 7 days a week radio/tv

No Rex on his 3aw after match talk back in 2017 , was rubbish

Rex was great when he had the other commentators to take on a callers question , back when aw had after match talkback in the 90s early 2000's
