Sam Wicks

Sam Wicks is a small forward with tidy skills below his knees and an outstanding awareness around goal. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy product was rookie-listed in November 2018 and was a consistent stand-out for the Sydney Swans’ NEAFL side in 2019. He became Sydney's fifth debutant of season 2020 when he was named to face Collingwood in Round 10, before finishing the season with seven appearances to his name. Wicks heads into 2021 fighting names like Tom Papley, Ben Ronke, Lewis Taylor and Sam Gray for a spot in Sydney’s best 22.

Sam Wicks

How I have gone from praying he was out of the side as a small forward to praying he is back in it as a small defender

He will end up Skipper as this rate

Have so much faith in him. Wish he kicked that goal, would have been one of the great ones, he set it up with multiple efforts.

Is so consistent

Loved watching Sam today. Exhibited every skill in the book, lots of speed, supported his teammates in every way. He hit targets (high DE%) with just a little pause.
When things got fiery he didn't back down but remained disciplined. A very impressive game from a small defender. Neither of the GWS smalls got off the leash. Coaches must be delighted.

Swans defender Sam Wicks has put a difficult 12 months behind him to emerge as one of the bright lights of the club’s 2025 season, rewarded with a new three-year contract on the back of his remarkable form in the back line.

“I think my mindset is to defend first and then, once we get the ball, use my speed and skills. That’s been the messaging and it’s been good.
They’ve thrown me down back and said, ‘You’ll make mistakes as you go, but we completely back you’. And I’m feeling very, very supported by the club.”

Well deserved contract and credit to Sam for embracing the change/challenge.
