Kid has played very little football the last 7 months

And we want him to play AFL full game

Whats the rush ?
I just think he needs some minutes this weekend and I'd rather it be at AFL than some exhibition match

Athletes are competitive beasts that will go 100% when playing at the highest level
The exhibition match will be at a much slower pace and we can limit his game time accordingly as its not an important game for players like Smillie.

The kid has had very limited game time and coming off a hamstring you dont want him running at flat out speed this early without the miles in the legs and also he will most likely play under his ability due to conditioning so whats to gain apart from satisfy supporters wants to see another new player.

Im wanting to take a precautionary approach and play is safe and give the kid every chance to play at his best when he debuts

Yeah I'm not denying what you're saying is the correct way. I just want to see him in. Even happy for him to subbed off.

Think that carry’s to much risk

Could cop an injury to someone else in the first 5 mins of the game and than he’s stuck and puts the coaches and fitness team in a shit situation if they still want to manage his mins

Better off keeping him in the magoos until he is 100%

I watched the VFL game.

To me Smillie strengths are size, speed, mobility for a guy his size, and he can kick etc.. from initial observation.

Jury is still out for me whether a run with role is the way to growth with Smillie overall.

Nevertheless, at the outset, I would like to see Smillie play more positional play, whether wing or half back, let the ball come to him by getting players to kick it too him, handball it to him to develop his game rather than simply chase it. Smillie at times looked as if he was wasting a bit of energy running around terms of using his attributes best. If teammates learn to use Smillie better in the best way it will help his game develop massively I think and help Smillie improve his impact

The best play is team play. It is more important to me Smillie and the team learns how best to play with each other. How to kick it to Smillie, how to handball to Smillie, how best does Smillie handball our team mates and kick to our team mates, in what situations, positions on the field, spacings etc...

I am not hundred percent convinced congestion play is the best usage for Smillie especially at the moment for his development. Smillie looks quicker and has more breakaway speed than Cripps. I do not see Smillie as Cripps necessarily so no need to go there or want to go there. Ideally we want Smillie to be the best Smillie for the team and the team help Smillie play as good as he can. I think from observation Smillie looks to have better go forward than Cripps. In open play Smillie could be more destructive to the opposition for our benefit than Cripps may be I think

A lot of the time the weekend Smillie would run to the player with the ball indicating closer option for his team mate to kick it to him, usually ignored as kicker worrying about not 15 metres I suppose. Probably better to do that from a bit further back and if he can improve his confidence in marking and positional play that will save is energy running all day long. Just something for Smillie to think about to improve his games strategically potentially as he is just starting. I am not saying Smillie has to be a KPP but if he can improve his positional play and contested positional play it should improve his game a lot and his overall effectiveness a great deal. Smilie is a unicorn, he still has to find his optimal way. I think improving his positional play will improves overall impact massively because his confidence will grow through his development and being able to get the balance right between chasing the ball and letting the teammates deliver the ball to him, cause remember, ultimately footy is a team sport and the team wins the premiership, not individuals. His teammates feed off that confidence and their confidence in knowing when to use Smillie as a outlet rather than predominantly Smillie running around chasing the ball as a pure follower

how often does Smillie do football work? does he bounce the ball a lot, ball in hand, live with the ball in his hands? if Smillie is more confident marking and being a receiver collecting the ball in his hands that is a big worry for oppositions. Otherwise oppositions just pigeonhole Smillie in congestion and neutralise him and our overall effectiveness as a team.

In terms practice/training I would get Tom Brown, Ralphsmith and Smillie in kicktokick sessions.

Smillie takes front position on Brown or Ralphsmith and Ralphsmith or Brown is kicking to the marking match up. Look in at Smillie's physique I would suggest Smillie use his bum/hips and body to out body, without using his hands on Brown or Ralphsmith to practice marking as well as off a sprint lead and then others defending. Smillie could also practice defending in the match ups as well, he might be a better defender playing in front to. Mostof the time Smillie will not be on bigger types so Brown and Ralphsmith could be goodpracticepartners

We're really taking it easy with him. It does feel like he is being ramped up for an Anzac Eve debut and I'm good with that.
We don't need him in the VFL for a minute longer than he needs to be.

Yes but we will need to make sure he has the miles in the legs and play when he is ready
no point bringing him in and getting torched

when ready he can replace short. hes fken hopeless.

no point bringing him in and getting torched
Or needing to severely monitor his game time

Just puts extra pressure on all the other players to pick up the slack while he is resting on the bench

Looking forward to seeing him but glad we are doing it properly
