Discussion 17-5 FIXTURE MODEL

Someone called up sen ages ago and suggested a 5-17 fixture which sounds pretty good to me. In the first 5 weeks you play the 5 teams in your group of 6 (from the previous year) and play everyone in the following 17 games

Having a pretty good debate about this on the main board. Here is my post from the main board thread for those not venturing to that part of the site -

Im not a math expert so I'm not 100% sure this would work across all 18 teams but this is a rough draft I did of a rolling fixture for the Adelaide Crows. On top of the below chart they would obviously play Port twice a year as a marquee match up. Along with the Showdown, the Derby, Q Clash and Sydney Derby would be played twice a year. The Vic teams would play a marquee match every year against another Vic team.

Ideally I would schedule the second rivalry round matches for the last round of the season. This would help take away any issues around travel before the finals as well as help lower the perception of tanking as nobody wants to lose a big game. With the week off before finals it would also help teams recover from these high intensity matches.

This means that over the span of 4 years the Crows play -

BL - 2H, 3A
Carl - 3H, 2A
Coll - 2H, 3A
Ess - 3H, 2A
Freo - 3H, 2A
GC - 3H, 2A
Geel - 3H, 2A
GWS - 2H, 3A
Haw - 2H, 3A
Melb - 2H, 3A
NM - 2H, 3A
Rich - 3H, 2A
Stk - 3H, 2A
Syd - 2H, 3A
WB - 2H, 3A
WCE - 3H, 2A

This can then be reversed over the following 4 years meaning that over a span of 8 years everyone has played everyone an even number of times both home and away. This doesn't include the rivalry round matches obviously. If it's possible to replicate this across all 18 teams then I would think it is much better than the 17-5 nonsense they are trying to push.
