I find it hard to believe that fitzroy will struggle with out one player no matter how good you all say he is. Have they got any 19's to come back from the seniors/vfl? They also wouldn't mind not being favourites anymore either!

Aquinas seem to be the team to beat come finals although i also rate old Xavs very highly despite a recent form slump. They are a physical side which will definately help them in finals action.

As for BT i am yet to be convinced that they will beat Xavs. Having only one win away from home won't help in finals. Their draw to therry after being up by 8-9 goals at three quarter time may indicate that they haven't played 4 quarters of footy yet. Old Xavs are favourites going into the semi against BT, Lee will be hard to stop along with their on-ball brigade! Prove me wrong boys from BT, but i think the Xavs have might have you covered.

Agree BT have not played 4 quarters this year played some very inpressive halves but not a full game. However Xavier a physical side is like saying Geelong has great fitness. Xavier talk tough but the do no put thier head over the ball. They see shadows and hear footsteps. Xaviers strength is their skills and run to receive.
Fitzroy are not a one man team but they do need that link to play at their best. Aquinas desevre fav. tag only as fitzroy worry that Aquinas have their number.
Should be exciting when finals do come around, but still another week ahead. Are players going to have their bodies break down on the home straight? Will players getted sucked into the fireworks that may come from the teams in their last game for the year and cop weeks for flying the flag? Will rested players lose their form? All will be answered after Saturday.

big call that one henry, considering the 12 goal 'pantsing' they gave Xavs a month ago. xavs midfield just didn't have any answers, and the ball hardly penetrated the BT backline except when they took the foot off the pedal.

I do not agree that Aquinas would be favourites for the flag. Fitzroy are a much better team and have a number of players who can step up when needed, where i think Aquinas needs Maaskant to dominate in the middle and around the ground if they are to have chance of winning anything. In the two games i saw them both against BT, thier reliance on Maaskant was unhealthy, in the first game he dominated the first half and they were winning after that he was stopped and they were overun. The second game BT had him covered in the first half and were up at halftime, then he started racking up the possies and they got over the line. I also have big question marks against Aquinas's Backline they dont seem to have any really good defenders and for that reason constantly use thier big bloke as a spare man in defence, using negative tactics can be very risky come finals time.

Think Old Xavs might have run their race mate, as one of their players indicated to me on the wknd when he said he'd bu suprsised if they did any damage in the finals.

Davey,

Was this an indication of one players view, or did you get the feeling that there may be a few others with the same attitude?

In either case, i strongly doubt they would be thinking that way now with the finals a week away. No one in finals football thinks they are there to make up the numbers. I could see how they may talk down their chances in a hope that BT do take them lightly, but then again i don't think any club would go to such lengths, and one would hope BT wouldn't be taking them lightly in either case.

On another note it should be a good clash between fitzroy and aquinas in the first week of the finals. Where can i find out where and when the finals are?

Cheers

Vafa website for the game times and venues. Can't see any team going into a finals match taking the game lightly, especially BT who have consistently missed out in recent years.

Best team i've seen this year was Reds, although Aquinas seems to have it over them, and the Xavs team in the 2nd half of the year was a shadow of themselves in the 1st half.

It was just one of their players (one of their better ones actually) he pretty much said they had a number of injuries, most wouldnt be back by week one or 2 of the finals and he wasn't expecting a lot saying we 'are stuffed for finals' That comment, coupled with a pretty average display agaisnt my very ordinary NOBS side, not to mention poor form over a number of weeks suggests to me that the Xavs might bow out first week.

One of those fellas who have a nice polite conversation with your opponent whilst on the field, eh daveyboy? Anyone else hate that?

Anyone with any knowledge of the VAFA will not count out Xavs for finals. You'll know why, i needn't say more.

Seems pretty stupid to call xavs soft, there has been no indication by any team that can suggest they are any tougher than another, i havent seen anyone in the competition really put their head over the ball, most wait for other players to get the footy for them. The top 4 in general have played good and crap games, dont see the point of writing any of them off, fitzroy havent exactly being playing fabulous football, but as long as they win it doesnt matter, this goes for old xavs, despite losing to royboys on the weekend, did win the previous 2 and yet were told they were horrible, they still won, doesnt matter if its ugly. Aquinas on the other hand have been consistant, but there is no reason why they cant get thumped like they did earlier in the yr, generally team of average players who have played well as a team, will only take a few good players to play well to dismantle them. BT are definately looking good, but like with aquinas have been taken to the cleaners. all in all its finals footy, anything can happen. Yet to see anyone in any team that has warranted any special attention, over all one player isnt going to win a premiership.

That is one of the stupidest things i've read on this forum, and i've read a lot of crap.
Whats your background? Have to be one of the hardest nuts goin around wouldn't ya?

I am an avid fan of U19 footy and watch a lot of different teams. New user and want to put a few comments to rest...

1. Paul Maaskant from Aquinas - I disagree with the statement that Aquinas rely heavily on him, there are a few other to watch out for in that team.

2. Fitzroy and Aquinas will slug it out for the flag the result will be like a toss of the coin, but Fitzroy on their day. Have to watch both forward lines though, will probably be goal for goal.

4. Voglis is one to watch out for in the future, that is P. Voglis.

5. What was Biggs thinking about??? Does finals not mean anything to him? Talking to the Rupertswood coach last week and he said Biggs headbutted the player in the huddle after the game!

6. Best CHB is the NOBs CHB. Very tidy like Cornes and Bowden but wants too much of the ball instead of stopping his opponent.

7. Tommy Lee is a gun, has to be near top for league B'N'F, how he is not playin 19 1's is a surprise but friendships may be stronger.

8. Xav's no where near soft, they and Aquinas and to an extent Bulleen-Temp are the strongest teams and go for the hard ball the most. Look at injury lists and where they are on the ladder.

9. What is in the water at Kew, have they all just fallen over. I watched their first game, looked super, since then they have turned to water, maybe its their training facilities, what a bog of a ground, expect more from an upmarket place like that! And when did they sign up that Neighbours star!?!

Finally, finals are here, what a great season, so many upsets, who will win the flag? Fitzroy or BT for me, cant rule oyut Aquinas though, Old Xavs I dont think will show up as all their players that drop down from the 1s for games against BT and Fitzroy and Aquinas, will be trying for a U19 1s flag.

Cheers

Interesting to see that BT seniors heartbreaking exit from making the finals will surely see some geniune gun footballers return to help thier 19's win the premiership. i know they have one gun foward who has kicked 13 goals in the last 3 weeks for the seniors and possibly a tower of a ruckman which in my opinion would have to be the biggest and best ruckmangoing around in the division, he is even one of the best going around in D1 section

Post game mate, not a big fan of it myself either. Although being wooden spooners you find when the games beyond doubt in the last quater quite a few players will try to strike up a 'nice polite convesation with you'

3. There was another invite to the VAFA squad and that was Ashley Naulty again from Aquinas. I heard a NOBSPC player spaeking about him, seems to go alright but didn't go to QLD as he was only 17. He made it to the last cut.

4. Voglis is one to watch out for in the future, that is P. Voglis.

Davey Boy or as I have come to know, Dave Ronan is a good footballer, obviously likes to talk to his opponents but is suited well to CHB and would be a good inclusion in any team and for conversation purposes!!!

Henry you can laugh at the 'soft' comment, but go watch every team, players in general wait for someone else to do their job, most just try and kick it off the ground etc, there might be one or two in most times, admittadly sometimes more, who actually want to touch at the expense of hurting themselves for the footy.

just want to say should be good finals series, but how some of u can say that tom lee isnt the best forward in the red div is a joke. he has dominated and could be easily playing 19 1's. still think that all the pressure is on aquinas and bt! flag is there for the taking, finals is a different kettle of fish

Getting down too the crunch part of the season it seems that with 7 rounds remaining the final 4 are looking clearer each week:
1 Fitzroy
2 Aquinas All look set in the top 3
3 Old Xavs

4 Bulleen/Temp
5 Kew
6 Therry

Will come down to % one would think.

Bullants look the likely ones and would be deserving finalist after a horror year with losing personal.
2nd game of the season they lost their Captain, Fabris a strong utility to a knee and had an inform ruckman go down with lesser injured leg, 3 more onballers the likes of Bain and Cherbakof went to the seniors early and don’t look like coming back, last years captain and gun CHB to a foot or leg, FF to ongoing problems, FB popped an ear, and groins ripping like wrapping paper and that’s only the beginning from what the club have mentioned.

Kew like Bulleen have a tough run home, unlike Bulleen Kew, are relying on to few to get the job done. The stirring Ryan Wyley has popped up in the best 7 times closely followed by the smooth moving show pony Monarco 6 bests and 30 goals. Fultheim Captain crunch has been a serial possession getter. Williams Wang has been a sight. While Berry and Wall have been solid.
When push comes to shove they miss and end up 6th and look back happy as they won the close ones.

Therry have the easiest run home but that means nothing as they are the Freo of this comp.
The look great at times but leave you scratching your head at others. The evergreens of Brennan, Claassen and Walker have done their job thus far. The ablity to share the ball around their forwards could hurt opposition with 4 players kicking more that 14 goals each. But as in the real world Therry’s end result reflected in the name of their major goal kicker. Costello (26goals) great servant but not meant for the top job. They finish 5th

What does anyone else think about it?

So they're in form?

mate if YOU are correct in saying that BT have a ruckman cuming back in to the line up and a forward that has kicked 13 goals in 3 games, which TAB do i go to 2 place a bet for the flag...

You seem to have mentioned the bloke in every one of your posts so far so perhaps u might just have a better understanding of wether he is playing finals or is overseas. Seems as if your trying to stir the pot a bit.

Yeah that could be true....and for anyone interested i heard that P.Voglis has decided that he doesn't like aussie rules anymore and has decided to try out for a college football team in the states, he and his manager flew out yesterday to meet with team coaches.
