Seinfeld the GOAT.

What else? Or shows in general. 90210, Party of Five and Dawsons Creek. Home Improvement was cool. Melrose Place.

People who like one but not both of Seinfeld or Frasier have an incomplete sense of humour. ;)

People who dislike both probably just don't enjoy laugh track conventional American sitcoms IMO, as they are two standouts compared to others that could be nominated.

Dramas

-Oz: I might rewatch this soon. Instant classic.

-Twin Peaks: cheesy as all hell, but entertaining and very 90s.

-The X-Files: the best sci-fi meets human psyche exploration.

-Homicide: Life On the Street - probably the best cop show of the decade.

-Freaks and Geeks - well written and cast high school dramedy.

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer: a product of its time but one that was done well.

Sitcoms and animated shows there were stacks to choose from depending on personal preference: Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, Just Shoot Me, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, Friends, Third Rock From The Sun, Spin City, The Drew Carey Show, Batman, Spiderman, Dragon Ball Z, X-Men, CatDog, Rocko's Modern Life, Pinky And The Brain, Gargoyles.

Quite a lot of it is kind of bad upon reflection, or a product of its time. That was the 90s!

Lol no they werent.

Cheers was still a moral comedy with moral resolutions ending many episodes. Its first 5-10 mins each episode were good but the rest was bluggh.

You seemed to be confused between the meaning of chaotic and predictable. If its more chaotic then by definition its less predictable.

Frazer was just crap. Not funny enough.

All humour is subjective but at least in my opinion both Seinfeld and Frasier are great sitcoms with some similarities and differences.

The essay nobody asked for:

Frasier works on a lot of sarcastic and witty exchanges that mock the characters insecurities. Dry, almost British wit but then the brothers end of contradicting that by ending up in self effacing situations. It works a lot more on the main cast interactions, with a few caricatures as side characters and then not a lot of brilliant one-offs. It does work a little more of the moral arcs and drama-based elements into it. The characters want to grow and learn - with varying success.

Seinfeld is very obviously a comedian's take on everyday life and usually the storylines are "bits", with the dialogue deconstructing the absurd or ironic element of that. The side characters are a lot more memorable and quotable, and that trickles down to iconic one off characters. It has the whole storylines converging to some sort of comedic climax at the end too. They refuse to give the characters redeeming features or emotional arcs.

Anyway I can understand why people would hate or love either show. I'm in the latter camp.

Grew up in the 90s so loved Home Improvement. A great family sitcom.

Nowadays I appreciate Fraiser. It's an acquired taste and I don't love it like many do, but enjoy the wit.

I've always thought the Brits did comedy better than the Yanks, and the 90's was no different:
  • Drop The Dead Donkey
  • Red Dwarf - Best seasons were in the 90's
  • The Brittas Empire
  • Men Behaving Badly
  • Mr Bean
  • Absolutely Fabulous

But I enjoy US dramas more, especially in the 90's:
  • X-Files
  • Twin Peaks
  • Northern Exposure
  • Sliders
  • Quantum Leap
  • Xena :$

Sliders is perhaps one of the best and totally rewatchable. I'm still trying to find streaming of it. Says on Binge but it's not. I might get the DVDs. There's an episode that pretty much nailed the Covid period with an outbreak portal.

I got into Red Dwarf in the early 2000s
Fresh Prince, I loved both Girl from Tomorrow and Spellbinder when I was at school in the 90s and this other space one with Matt doran or one of those Neighbours/H&A actors.

I didn't really get into much tv other than the shows mentioned. Watched scant episodes of Buffy for Faith
Watched a fair bit of The Nanny
Frasier, 3rd Rock, Seinfeld, Friends, Married with Children

With the Brits you can add Allo Allo. Keeping Up Appearances and I’ll add in Gimmee Gimmee Gimme which aired between 1999 to 2001. Thin Blue Line.

Black Books was late 90’s I think, but might have been early 2000’s.

Also in the 90’s Australia had Fast Forward, shows such as Good News Week on the AbC, the Big Gig, D Generation, DAAS Kapitol, Club Buggery, Rove, Denton and to a lesser extent the Panel.

American comedy is just crap.

I also agree that the Americans can make some good dramas though, especially in that time frame.

Ally McBeal
Picket Fences
The Practice

All 3 were David E Kelly productions

Add in shows such as the Commish, Walker Texas Ranger, Silk Stalkings, ER, Forever Knight and Due South.

Australia was also making some good drama’s back in the day, with All Saints, Blue Heelers, Heartbreak High, Stingers, Ocean Change, The Man from Snowy River, GP and Water Rats.

Unfortunately all Australia does now is crappy reality TV, and Home and Away. Such a shame, because for a little while we were producing some good stuff.
