Player Watch #20: Ivan Maric

About to shoot bambi here...

This is not just about last night & I know Ivan has had to combat Sandilands and Naitanui in successive games which is very tough but plenty have been saying he 'needs a rest' for a few weeks now and boy... he really was lumbering last night, even when Nic Nat was nowhere near him.

We have loved his work for the past few years and he still does do the odd inspirational thing but he will be 30 next year so the question is, can we push for a flag with Ivan as our number one ruck?
& if not... will Hampson take us there? Soldo?

Vickery and Griff are both capable 2nd rucks but to win big games, finals games you almost always need a really dominant ruckman for the centre bounce and around stoppages.

IMO forget Dangerfield or whoever else might still be around - the doozy we desperately need to find is a quality ruckman in his mid 20's.

Um, we beat Freo. We set up the stoppages based on losing the hitout with them. We didnt with WC (overly simplifies)
Maric was found in positions last night where he is trying to chase and tackle much smaller players. He simply shouldnt have found himself in that position.

Big Ivvy was never able to go forever...I've always had a 3 year life on him. I'm not convinced he is at the cliff right now, but he will reach it eventually.

Locked away out CHB...beta back and refreshed ruck department are the next focus issues.

Yup - accept that & reckon he has been immense...

Definitely need to improve our ruck depth. I'd be going after Kruezer if he looks to be over his injuries.

Ivvy has been an absolute gun for us but too much is being asked of him. He wasn't alone in being beaten last night. I can't think of a single player who won their position.

Simply get one of Leunberger, Redden or Kreuzer. It is definitely an area we lack players in, Vickery and Griff can go in there sometimes to pinch hit but we need to recruit another genuine ruckman so we can have Jack, TV and Griff up forward for mostof the game. Maric has been a great servant and will be for a couple more years but we need to get someone else to support him so he doesn't have to play every single game.

Go after Kreuzer and Leuenberger.

If not then the other option is to bulk Tyrone up to 100+kgs and play him there.

Forget Kreuzer, way too risky. Chances he will be injured by the time any given finals series comes around is very high.

Wasn't Ivan's fault.

We went third man up around the ground and still got beaten even if we got the tap.

They read the ball well and either our setups were poor defensively or we just aren't good enough.

He looks slow and he's only going to get slower.

We should try Vickery/Griffiths ruck. Would do no worse than Maric and offer more around the ground.

P.S No to Kruezer, LBurger - maybe.

Timing never been one of my strong suits....
But the question still remains and last night highlighted a few things IMO...

always reckoned he must be one of the most over rated players going around (unless he does some amazing stuff off the ball which is not sown on TV) - I wouldn't cry into my beer if Hardwick gave Hampson a run.

A much as getting Kruzer would be ok, not only would it potentially cost too much (even if Carlton do look to move him on, they are not going to just give the bloke away after investing so much into the him), you can't bank on a bloke with a medical history to rival Bruce Reid's to hold down the number 1 ruck spot for multiple seasons.

Haven't seen Hampson play for us for a long time. Would people be against him being gifted 3-4 games just to keep Ivan from deteriorating? Or would it be mega meltdown unbearable bigfooty contend after 1 quarter?
